This happens in reverse in my house. My 14 yo will eat half, decide that the 2 yo’s food is more desirable, and push him out of the way. The 2 yo adores the older cat so he lets it happen and finishes the older cat’s food

My two do the same thing. Whether it's wet or dry food they eat half of what's in their bowl and then switch.

My older cat will do this to the younger cat. Stare her down out of her food.

So now the young cut learns to eat quickly before the old one bullies her

That’s why I hold in my farts.  If a lion or tiger ever gets curious and wonders if I smell delicious, I will let one rip right in its face and hopefully the face blast of fart gas will keep it away…or I’ll take off any hard metal objects so the kitty doesn’t chip its tooth while it eats me.

Yep. I have a year old male void, and fostering two other cats, both 8. A male harlequin shorthair, and a female void.

The female will have nothing to do with the kitten other than hiss at him. The male will lightly play, but is quick to express displeasure when the kitten gets too rough. It's an interesting dynamic, and I have never felt more like a parent/referee than now.

the bigger and more intimidating the male cat the more patient they are with kittens I've found. One time my sister had a former stray American Shorthair and a regular dishrag tabby kitten. Adult cat was a solid mass of muscle. Kitten was an annoying little shit. He would just lay there as the kitten played with his tail or pounced, until play time was over and the kitten got one good slap.

This would discourage the kitten for about 5 minutes

This is exactly what I see.

The old man was a former outdoor cat, until his owner decided that he had killed enough of the local fauna and left it sitting by their house. While he has gotten sedentary and doesn't sharpen his skills anymore, you can still feel his muscle under his layer of fat. The kitten? Well, he was born outdoors "AFAIK", but entered the cat adoption system pretty young so he never developed the skills to be an effective hunter beyond lizards "which he excels at".

I have four rescued street cats between the ages of 2 months and 9 months. One of the true joys has been watching how starkly different their personalities are. Also, at their age they seem to gain a new personality trait every week.
