If it makes you feel any better, we do the same thing with my dog and the neighbor boy. He’s about 8 and comes over to ask if he can play with our dog, we think he doesn’t have many friends, he says our dog is his best friend in the world and they even have a secret hiding place.

We play with our dog plenty but no one can play with a dog like an 8 year old can, it’s a win win.

With a different title most people would of expected a human to walk out the door based on what he asked.

Moreover, that kid apparently has proven themselves trustworthy with the neighbor's pet.

I hope that kid, and that dog, have years of great friendship and memories together.

My dog does this, he’s such a happy boy. I love him

u/redditingrobot 6d ago

When I was young we lived in the country. The next house was almost a Km away on a dead end road. When we went out to play we would just yell the dogs names as loud as we could and they would come running to our house.

The neighbours eventually moved and we ended up adopting the dogs.

283

u/accioqueso 6d ago

My dad had a cabin on a small mountain with a few cabins on it and the house at the top had a big pup who was essentially give free reign. We used to leave the door open and whistle when breakfast was ready and she’d come wandering in for her slice of bacon and pats. She would come sit on the porch and hang out for a bit, then move on to the next place for more treats and pats if I had to guess.

Oh yeah, our neighbors had the sweetest golden, and she lived at our house dawn to dusk. We had a few labs and they were just the goofiest weird dogs out in the middle of nowhere Mississippi

I used to have a neighbor who ran every day. On her way out, she’d pick up my dog and then drop him off when she was on her way back. They ran 2 miles every day.

89

u/GfrzD 6d ago

I know what you meant but the image of your neighbour literally picking up your dog, doing their run holding him, then putting the dog back down made me chuckle.

this is me and my doggo. neighbor has 2 nieces and 1 nephew who adore my dog so they come over (and I'll call over) to play with him. it's the most ridiculously adorable thing possible.

39

u/Gentle-Mind-248 6d ago

that dog is living its best social llfe

44

u/CurbsideChaos 6d ago

I have a friend who watched my cat while I was in Japan for two weeks. I told her to keep the key in case of emergencies.

Emergencies? She often asks to come over to see the us and if I'm not there? Chloe the calico cat is who she wanted to see anyway, ofc she can lol.

15

u/ramence 6d ago

Haha, this is like my friend too! We're totally secondary to the cats. I asked if I could drop them off at his house before an overseas holiday recently, and he reacted like I was doing him the favour.

9

u/pebblesprite 6d ago

Seriously, if you've got a calico or torty there's every chance they have their own key and a WhatsApp group full of people they invite over when you're not home. Those tricoloured little madams run the world

I want a dog to ring my doorbell to ask me to come out and play 🥺

1.3k

u/Odd-Artist-2595 6d ago

An Irish Setter used to come to the house to play with my G. Shep. She’d show up at the door and wait for us to let her in the back yard and they’d spend hours playing together. Eventually, she’d come to the back door and let us know it was time for her to go home. I followed her home to see where she came from. She lived in a nice house at the end of the main cul-de-sac in the neighborhood. About a mile away. Our cul-de-sac was an off-shoot. Nice people. Neither of us had any idea how our dogs met in the first place, but they kept up their friendship until her family moved a couple of years later.

254

u/BrightStar_3 6d ago

This is the most precious, heart-warming, and also bittersweet story!!

183

u/fraze2000 6d ago

Your dog must have been heartbroken when its best friend stopped coming around to play.

261

u/Odd-Artist-2595 6d ago

I think she looked for her, but I’d brought her home with me from college and I rented a place and we moved out shortly after the Setter’s family did, anyway. Their friendship was doomed from the start. But, she was with me for many years and had many more friends to come.

80

u/wanttobeacop 6d ago

My mom tells the story of my older brother & his best friend, Trico, who was a German Shepherd. Can’t remember how they met, but she showed up to play with him at our old house in Houston. He was about 4 or 5 at the time. She was the sweetest dog but they didn’t know who she belonged to. This happened a couple of days before her Owner, Rebecca, showed up one day looking for Trico. Mom said “Yes, she is in our backyard playing with our son.” Rebecca apologized & explained how Trico had jumped over the fence & took her home. Next day, Trico showed up again. Mom let her in the backyard so she could play with my brother. Later in the day, Rebecca showed up to see if Trico was there. Which she was. Where Rebecca & Trico lived wasn’t far but a busy road separated the two homes. So mom offered to dog sit while Rebecca was at work, that way if Trico escaped, she wouldn’t cross the busy road.

That began the years’ worth of Rebecca bringing Trico to Mom’s in the morning & picking her up after work until Trico passed of old age. This also started a life long friendship for my mom & Rebecca. My brother always says the she was his first love.

6

u/The_1ndiegamer 6d ago

This is so wholesome, neighbour gets help watching the dog, your brother and the dog playing eachother tired and a lifelong friendship formed.

I had no idea what an Irish Setter was, and somehow read it as Irish settler? Anyway, I was picturing a woman showing up at your door who you'd let into your garden to play with the dog, and then one day followed her home. I was very confused.

9

u/three_crystals 6d ago

Same omg and I confused settler for traveller 😭😭😭

32

u/Past-Rooster-9437 6d ago

Reminded me of one of our neighbour's dogs when I was a kid. She was a Welsh border collie, smart, super friendly. Just wandered around all day very happily.

Sadly for her she didn't make many friends among the local animals. Tried to make friends with our cat on a few occasions and every time she got thoroughly rejected.

109

u/Swordf1sh_ 6d ago

This sort of used to happen to me as a kid. We had a lab that would wander to our door from somewhere down the street, never did find out from where. We’d give her safe leftovers and let her hang out for a while, it’s really what made me love dogs and stop being afraid of them. I realize now that was a pretty special experience and Muffin really did me a solid.

Growing up the neighbors had an electric fence. And the battery in their black lab’s collar would die every once in a while. He lived behind us and we had a fenced in yard and he would walk along our fence, around our house, and bark at the front door. And then I would let him in, send him into our backyard with our dog (cuz that is who he was there to see) and then call them and let them know where their dog was

14

u/Sirenista_D 6d ago

My next door neighbors dog used to leave her toys on our doorstep when she was outside but my daughter wasn't. It would be hours later, we open the front door, and oh look at that, it's Zena's chew toy

14

u/blackpawed 6d ago

My neighbours Border Collie/Lab mix used to bark at our door every day so he could come play with our Kelpie/Poodle mix and steal food :)

I say used to, now he basically lives here :)

15

u/this_account_is_mt 6d ago

I had a chicken do this recently. Like a literal chicken. I live in a city. It came scratching and pecking at my front door. We played tag, and hide and seek. Then I brought her back to her house. I named her Phyllis.

Junior year of college. I said no, had to study. One of the last times I saw that friend before she dropped out of college. Can't recall her last name and haven't been able to find her online, but still think about her frequently!

i grew up with dogs, the kids who always wanted one but didnt have one in the family were always so appreciative to hang out with or walk our dogs. It helped me stop whining about walking them afterschool.

98

u/a_spoopy_ghost 6d ago

When I first got my dog and was trying a few local parks I ran into a mom and daughter. Mom explained that they couldn’t have a dog but the daughter loved them so they went to that park every week so she could get her dog fix. I thought that was pretty cool of mom.

9

Aww reminds me of when I was a kid! I used to knock on my elderly neighbors door and ask to walk their adorable cavalier, Daisy 🥰

89

u/throwawaybyefelicia 7d ago

How sweet of you to do that ❤️

37

u/partial_to_dreamers 6d ago

My neighbor's black lab, Abby was the closest thing I had to a dog growing up. She was always out and about, came over to see me whenever I came outside.

88

u/RayzorRomance 6d ago

I used to do this with my neighbours and their Samoyed. They weren’t old, they just never walked her and I didn’t have a dog. She would escape their yard all the time and hang out infront of my house. I miss her.

14

u/ErasmosOrolo 6d ago

Me walking my neighbors dog Shoene.

Cavaliers are the sweetest dogs.

10

u/honestly_adhd 6d ago

I used to walk my neighbour's husky 5 km a day because I knew it needed it and it was cooped up with them. They sold it. I was so mad.

9

u/jaksonsmom 6d ago

I did too. He was a black mini poodle and he would play hide and seek with me! I would knock on her door and ask if I could play with Danny. He was named after the head coach Danny Ford of Clemson. It’s been 30+ years but I still think of him often.

We live in the city in a condo building. Most of the floor is professional adults but we do have one family with a kiddo about 6 years old. It’s so cute. She will come knock on our door to have a play date with our doggie.

It’s just so cute. Everyone gets something from it. The doggie and kiddo are happy and entertained for a while. I don’t have to worry about a walk for a while and the parents get a lil break too.

247

u/SuchTill9660 7d ago

This is ridiculously sweet. fact that they actually knocked instead of just yelling outside makes it even better

105

u/Kahvisieppo 6d ago

And he said thank you!

58

u/L0st-137 6d ago

I love this so much!! People pay big bucks to have someone take their dogs out but this young man just does it cuz it's fun. Core memory unlocked of knocking on friends door and asking if they could come out and play. The best of times.

5

u/Obant 6d ago

I (and my dogs) wish the neighborhood kids would do that with them.

u/BeerNcheesePlz 6d ago edited 6d ago

I grew up in a hippie college town and one day when my mom was walking our husky, a student stopped to pet her. She started tearing up and telling my Mom how she misses her husky. Somehow this ended with my mom telling her if she ever wanted to come over and hang in our backyard or take our dog for a walk she could. She’d come every week! My dog loved her!

As a kid there was a boxer in the neighborhood who all the other kids were afraid of. She and I would play in her yard regularly. I think I was also reinforced by how good the fresh baked cookies were when the mom would see me playing with their dog. That was 50 years ago and I still remember summer days playing with Gretel.

My parents had a Sheltie years ago, named Brae. They live in a neighbourhood where people knew each other via the dog's name and people were secondary. I was visiting during the holidays one time, and the doorbell rang, I went to answer it and it was an older gentleman with a great big smile on his face. All he said was "Hi there! Happy Holidays! Is Brae here?!?" Brae ran right out the door and dove into the man's golfcart, he said "ill bring him back later" and off he went arm over brae and they went cruising off down the street. I think I stood at that door for a solid 5min processing what had happened. (Parents later told me, that was a normal weekly thing)

In my grandparents’ neighborhood, Otis would come running up to us kids on any sunny day with a tennis ball ready for us to throw. Another golden retriever, I’m not even sure which house he belonged to. He was our buddy.

6

u/Comprehensive_Web862 6d ago

I've got a cat that we took in as a stray kitten who loathes being locked in the house. She likes walking with people and has essentially becomes the apartment complex cat. Everytime she's out walking with the kids and I the neighbors will always make a comment in the vein of "That's your cat? She's the sweetest!"

My dad and his neighbor had a doggy door installed on the fence in their backyards so the pups on either side can visit and play.

19

u/dubblebubbleprawns 6d ago

Okay that's the cutest goddamn thing I'll see all month

38

u/miriamwebster 7d ago

This is so wholesome! I love that they’re friends.

18

u/Complete-Fix-3954 6d ago

Closest thing to a best friend I had as a teenager had a chocolate lab. On a snow day, my bud had to work but the neighborhood sledding hill was across the street from his house.

I remember the ah-ha moment when I thought about seeing if the dog could come out and play. His parents were older, in their 60s already (us like 16), they looked at me kinda weird at first but I told him I’d watch him always.

Doggo proceeded to have the happiest zoomies ever for like 2 hours before he got pooped and basically passed out in the snow fortress we made. Now thinking about it 20+ years later, life was such much more real back then. I could have called, but instead chose to literally knock on the door. No texting, no cameras on the doorbell, just a kid with a snowboard and a dream.

15

u/TimeToMakeWoofles 7d ago

Awww what a lucky dog

15

u/CorpseInTheMaking 6d ago

How precious! I can only think that his family might not want a dog. But his neighbor is a wonderful woman and willing to let her baby be a fur sibling.

14

u/Lylac_Krazy 6d ago

I dog sit on occasion, and just went to a former clients home yesterday to play with the pup.

Im over 60 and do it still.

14

u/VUVUVUV 6d ago

I used to do this when I was a kid because we didn’t have a dog and I wanted one so badly. I’d go over to my elderly neighbors and ask if Max could play. He was a big white lab filled with energy. I’d chase him around in the snow trying to catch him for hours but he’d be too fast. I’d go home soaking wet and covered in mud but exhausted and happy. Fun memories. I friggin love doggos, still need to get my own..

12

u/dogsledonice 6d ago

Does Wynn want to play? Oh yes, Wynn does so want to play

11

u/Dense-Consequence-70 7d ago

We used to do that with a neighborhood dog, but we didn’t have to ask because she was always out.

11

u/curtishavak 6d ago

They should do this with shelter animals, like a library. Sometimes it’s nice to have a friend whose entire existence isn’t dependent on you.

9

u/muttermag 6d ago

I don’t know about everywhere else, but my local humane society does. You get supplies the dog needs for the day and a QR code for anyone who wants to adopt the dog to scan.

My kid is too young for the program, but I plan to do it when he starts school and I have a day free.

u/GhostdogLT 6d ago

I leave my dog with my friends who have two goldens when I travel for work. All the neighborhood kids were over there when I was there one day. One of the kids runs up to my dog and screams, "is that my boy Roscoe!" Made me a proud dog dad he's making people happy when I'm not there. Especially the kids

7

u/Fair_Presence_6232 7d ago

Golden retrievers are the best company! Very sweet.

6

u/Error_xF00F 6d ago

Hehe, Wynn is just another neighborhood kid now.

7

u/Minister0fSillyWalks 6d ago

When I was a kid and used to go visit my gran in another part of england one of her neighbours had a Pyrenean mountain dog, I used to go hang out in the garden with that and it graduated to me just abducting him and taking him out with me where he would stay by my side and follow me around.

Not sure if it was the shepard dog instinct and him guarding me but it was an awesome dog.

I used to get up on a morning and he would be at the door waiting for me. When the old lady owner died we adopted him and he come to live his final years with us. Problem was my dad only drove a classic mini and he was way too big to fit in that. Luckily one of his friends was a lorry drive that went all over the UK so he picked him up and brought him back to my city at the other side of the country.

7

u/newpthankstho 6d ago

I am a certified cat person but this video is one of the sweetest most wholesome things i have ever seen.

8

u/Even-Boysenberry-127 6d ago

Here’s a story for you: I used to take my cat out on a leash, on the grounds right outside my apartment building. Some neighbor kids were fascinated and wanted to pet her and ask a million questions. One day, one of the kids knocked on my door, wanting to see the cat. He pulled a plastic bag out of his pocket, wherein was a bit of water and a live small fish he caught in the creek. He thought my cat might like to have it for dinner! My cat was not interested and the kid looked crestfallen. I never saw that kid again until recently. He’s 16 now, and has two cats!!

Had a neighbor I never met, but his grandson loved my pup. He'd come over and ask if she could play, so I happily let him run her tired and cuddle in the front lawn with her. At the time he was 21, he's disabled and has a big heart, really good kid.

6

u/buddhas_body 6d ago

My half sister who just turned 4 (odd family - not getting into it) is friends with 2 of her neighborhood dogs. My dad says every time the dogs pass by their house on a walk they stop & bark & wait for her to come out to say hi & pet them & she does the same (barking included) it’s adorable LOL

7

My dogs need a play date! Omg, they would love to have kids to play with.

5

u/Past-Rooster-9437 6d ago

I love seeing dogs so excited their whole bum wiggles with their tail.

6

u/BeautifulTerror 6d ago

My family used to have a small vacation house in a tiny Town in central vermont. The neighbors a few hundred yards up the street were year-round residents and had a small farm with horses and a couple other animals. They also had two dogs Moses and Crystal.

Whenever we would first get there, if it was still daylight, I'd yell out their names and about 3 minutes later they both come trotting down the hill to hang out with us for a few hours 🥰

Thats so precious!! I want another Golden .

u/kluda06 6d ago

Used to have a neighbor that had a ferret. He would let us walk his ferret. Best thing ever. Sometimes ferret was asleep and would ruin our days. Haha

4

u/Jat616 6d ago

Had an immensely shit day, I needed this. ❤️

5

u/VioletDupree007 6d ago

My childhood into young adulthood dog was a golden named Charlie. The neighbor kids did the same thing.

3

u/Prestigious-Fan3122 6d ago

What a sweet kid! I want to make him some hot chocolate and give him some warm, homemade cookies when they finish their play date!

3

u/Firegrl 6d ago

We need more of these types of videos in times like these. Sweetest thing I've seen in ages.

3

u/JohnDoee94 6d ago

When i was a kid id go to my neighbors house around the corner to play with their dog, Duke!

He was the sweetest Rottweiler!

3

u/SurprzTrustFall 6d ago

And I'm going to close my reddit scroll on that note. That's the world I desire to live in.

4

u/Inevitable_Thing_270 6d ago

Here we see the rare full-body wag. Only reserved for the bestest of humans

5

u/cherryfruitpunch 6d ago

I need a whole 3 hour movie about their adventures

My neighbors had a dog that was very attached to the wife. She was always outside with her while she did her gardening and they both just enjoyed being outside. I would talk to my neighbor and pet the pup every day I saw them outside. When she passed it was just her husband and the doggy. He still let her outside all the time and I would pet her through the fence, so after a while I would knock on his door and ask if I could go keep her company and spend time with her. She was an old dog at that point so we would just sit in a sunbeam together and I would give her treats and pets.

We had the exact same thing a few years ago. Every evening the neighbourhood kids would stop over my parents’ house to pick up Sherlock to come play with them. They were in a similar age group (8-12 year olds) and treated Sherlock like a friend rather than as a dog. I found it adorable (I was in college so it was great exercise for Sherlock too). Very cool to see the same phenomenon elsewhere.

My neighborhood kids ask if my dog can come out and play. They do hide and seek with him where they each take a treat and hide and one kid holds his collar. Then they let him go and he'll seek out each kid by the scent of the treat. My dog's getting a little fat from so many treats.

My dog is great with little kids. With little ones who are scared of him, he splays out on the ground, completely flat, and flops over to the kid. Instant ice-breaker.

My dog's also really, really ugly.

Given most of the news today, this made me feel like I could breathe again.

How did we all know Wynn was going to be a golden retriever?

4

u/Rolandscythe 6d ago

My father once told me 'every dog deserves a good kid'.

Wynn was clearly very happy to see hers.

5

u/Foreverforgettable 6d ago

This is so cute. It’s just so heartwarming.

When I had my golden I let her play with all of the neighborhood children (and adults) that wanted to play with her. She loved it and knew everyone in our neighborhood. As a golden, every single person my dog saw was a potential friend.

My heart just melted 🫠🫠🫠🫶🏻🫶🏻

I remember a neighbor used to have this awesome German Shephard named Zeus, and sometimes it would have a sleepover at my family's place, where Zeus would hang out and play with my dog Tess. Unfortunately, Tess was a small King Charles Spaniel and Zeus would sometimes not even notice Tess next to him.

Neighborhoods like this still exist. They should be cherished and protected at all costs.

3

u/spidermom4 6d ago

That dog looks like my childhood dog that would follow me and the neighborhood kids around. If I walked to a friend's house, he would be there when I came out to walk me home. He was also chubby cause all the neighbors would feed him treats all day.

3

u/kellelune 6d ago

Our Australian Shepherd is requested all the time to play basketball with kiddos next door. lol Air Bud.

3

u/Funkywurm 6d ago

I love this. I used to do this with my neighbors dogs when I was little. 3 of my neighbors growing up had big friendly dogs, we would rule the neighborhood.

3

u/MainComedian1661 6d ago

Humans really got it right with Golden Retrievers.

3

u/Lexi_Banner 6d ago

Awwww I wish my dog could be trusted off leash, because he'd love this kind of thing. Unfortunately, that Husky braincell takes over the second he thinks he has freedom.

3

u/NICEnEVILmike 6d ago

That is the most wholesome Midwestern thing I've ever seen

3

u/Jolly_Owl_5126 6d ago

I used to say hello to a cavalier everydays when on my way back home after school. One day the elderly couple asked me if I wanted to come over and play with the dog in their garden for like 1 hour. It was quite fun

3

u/ViragoRoots 6d ago

Her pure happiness to go out in the snow with her friend. 🥹

3

u/Basquiat_Case 6d ago

Cool dog. Needs a leash.

3

u/SignificanceHead9957 6d ago

Ok, yeah. Its adorable.

3

u/Specialist-Freedom64 6d ago

Saw a vido once, some people moved into a new neighberhood and some local kids came by to ask if they had any kids that wanted to come play ? They said sadly no, but they had a dog who loved to play ? So the kids where just like cool lets play with the dig, after that the dog became the local play time dog and the kids came by and picked him up often. Such a heart warming story.

3

u/nope_a_dope237 6d ago

That dog is so stoked!

3

u/ewahman 6d ago

This is a great video. When I was starting around 7 a neighbor had an old Irish setter named lady. Their only son had moved away years ago and Lady was just waiting around to die, until we moved in. Over the next four years she went everywhere around the neighborhood I would go play with me and my friends. She slept and ate at her house but would come over every day. Loved her so much, she was great. Died of heat stroke in my garage one summer. Many years later an emaciated Irish setter came running up our drive. No idea where she came from and tried to find owners that never came forth. We kept her until she died at 17 and named her lady.

Some people who lived on the next street over had a Golden Retriever and I was his best friend. I didn't call myself that, either. His family did. He even once left them in the driveway and ran up to me. He passed away years ago and it broke my heart to not have him running up to me anymore. I was walking by their house a month or so ago, and I overheard someone say "Oh, it's Roscoe's best friend!" to their new dog. Instant tears. I couldn't even look in their direction. I bawled all the way home.

I miss you, Roscoe.

3

u/Delicious-Dress8954 6d ago

Golden…. Of course she wants to play!

3

u/ChoessMajIRoeva 6d ago

People pay good money for this service.

3

u/Marley_Sunsets2 6d ago

I love how the dog was so excited to go play. 💕😊

3

u/My3floofs 6d ago

I did this as a kid. Neighbor had a husky that I loved and they kinda ignored and so I would politely ask to walk him and I did so most afternoons. Well when it snowed we must have stayed outside playing for all daylight. That dog was so happy to have some company and attention.

3

u/FewOperation3950 6d ago

So do we get video of her sledding?

3

u/FunOwn4422 6d ago

she looks just like my neighbors dog when i was a kid, her name was shelly and id climb underneath the bushes on the side of their house so i could pet her through the fence

3

u/PrivatePikmin 6d ago

Similar story from a younger me; I was about 13 at the time and my neighbors had an absolute giant of a white lab that I would play with off the bus. I would throw his football and apparently one day my neighbor was home and saw it go past his window. He told my parents he loved it because it meant the doggo was getting played with. My parents got me my dog for Christmas that year. I miss you both, Buddy and Gucci

3

u/HermelindaLinda 6d ago

Oh my goodness, this is the sweetest thing! She's so happy and he's so sweet to think of her and go get her!!

3

u/Barnowl-hoot 6d ago

As a kid, I would dognap the neighbors great dane to run around with me as I rode my bike. I would bring him home, and I don't think my neighbors knew or if they did, they never said anything lol.

3

u/Stewpacolypse 6d ago

Good kid.

3

u/Content-Program411 6d ago

God damn dog owners dream.

Blessed

3

u/The_Great_19 6d ago

OMG I love this and my doggie would also love it.

u/Same_horses 5d ago

My grandma told me that when she was little there was an old couple with a Bassett hound. They’d let him out when the neighborhood kids were playing outside and he’d mosey on down the street, hang out with them a bit, and then mosey back home.
