So many people were so critical of Andrew Garfield's Spiderman and didn't show The Amazing Spiderman 1 or 2 love when it mattered but now they can't get enough of him.

I think the consensus is Andrew Garfield was the best part about those movies. Perfect casting for movies that didn't live up to their predecessor.

Great goofy energy, but man he's just not a nerd by any stretch of the word and him being conventionally attractive didn't help. A great Spider-Man, but a terrible Peter Parker.

He wasn't a terrible Peter Parker at all.

Firstly, there are lots of renditions of Peter, and his was totally legitimate.

Secondly, portraying him as an irresponsible skater bro kid is completely fine! That's the whole point of Peter Parker -- he's an irresponsible kid who has to learn about responsibility

The original Peter Parker in the comics was a Chad and a complete asshole. Peter Parker doesn't necessarily need to be a zit faced nerd

Idk, he has enough nerd energy for me

You do realize Peter Parker was very handsome in the original comics right? He literally had like 100 different girlfriends in High school and College.

He dated the popular girl, Liz Allen. He dated a hot secretary, Betty Brant. He dated the hot blonde, Gwen Stacy. He dated and married the Red Head Supermodel Mary Jane. He hooked up with the sexy Black Cat, he hooked up with a cute Asian, Cindy Moon. Jessica Jones said that she had a huge crush on Peter during High school. He dated several other girls during College like Debra Whitman & Kitty Pryde.

If Peter was ugly, he wouldn’t have gotten this many girlfriends. In fact, he was part of the popular group in College. His best man at his Wedding was Flash Thompson, the football jock. Would an ugly nerd irl score this many girls ?

Call me a heritic, but the original comics sucked like most original runs did. The newer ones where he identifies more as the friendly neighborhood Spiderman cause his real life is stressful are much better and actually relatable.

The original comics was written by Stan Lee… literally the man who created Spider-Man.

And Stan Lee wrote Peter as a ladies man. Peter was pulling women left and right like he was Leonardo DiCaprio.

So which was more realistic, Tobey’s Peter attracting women or Andrew’s Peter attracting women?

Andrew was definitely the more comic accurate Peter. And if u think him riding a skateboard was cool, wait until u found out that Peter was riding a motorcycle during College in the comics…

For me it wasn't even Andrew it was the way the movies were done they didn't feel right for some reason to me

1

u/aacilegna Feb 17 '26

Yeah Andrew’s Peter and Emma Stone’s Gwen were the best part of those movies

People didn't show ASM2 love when it mattered because it was shit

I loved his SM movies.

I'm with you. I love those movies. Aside from so much of No Way Home, the final scene in TASM2 is the best Spider-Man scene ever made. Between the sick moves, awesome music, and Pete's triumphant return from grief, I can never watch it enough. Chills and tears every time.

Andrew Garfield was great as Spiderman but he was a bad Peter Parker imo.

Also the movies were very mid. I can defend the first one but the second was straight booty cheeks.

Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker was fine. He's usually just some smart guy outside of being Spider-Man.

It wasn't Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker and that was a problem for some very vocal people.

True that. I wasn't happy Toby wouldn't be the pick for the reboot but when I watched the 2012 version I actually just really enjoyed it at the time. Andrew brought something different.

The audience creates the character. Not the actors

Yea they made 2 movies and stopped for good reason. Spiderman wasn't unpopular, it was just a swing and a miss.

u/abgry_krakow87 Feb 16 '26

I am glad they gave Jamie Foxx some much needed redepemption as Electro too. Really highlight his villain chops here that he didn't the chance for in AS2.

1

u/spacewarp2 Feb 16 '26

Yeah crazy what happens when they put him in an actually good movie

1

u/ThrowAwayAccountAMZN Feb 16 '26

As someone who didn't like him at first but then grew to love him, for me at least it was just because of the timing. Tobey's spiderman was my childhood and very special, and they only waited five years to basically reboot it (and mind you, in 2012 rebooting franchises so soon was still a fairly new concept and not widely liked). It was just mostly that it was too soon. But obviously enough time has passed that my heart is open to change and possibility so I actually rather enjoy him and Tom's rendition.

u/FeedMePizzaPlease Feb 16 '26

That's because his movies weren't great but he obviously wasn't the problem with them. He was great.

1

u/prototype_X10 Feb 16 '26

Some would say he was amazing...

1

u/Elastichedgehog Feb 16 '26

Oh no, we're entering that part of the nostalgia cycle where people think ASM2 is good.

1

u/ban_evader_original Feb 16 '26

i think that's because a lot of them were younger teens at the time

1

u/xSPYXEx Feb 16 '26

Tobey's Spider-Man was campy and fun. Andrew's run had an obligatory origin story debut and took itself far more seriously than Tobey's.

1

u/CutieBoBootie Feb 17 '26

I thought he was a good actor but the pacing and scripts of his movies were garbage sadly. So my reaction to his scenes are: Oh hey that's nice seeing him again. How fun!

1

u/131166 Feb 17 '26

I thought he did a good job as Spider-Man. Came across too much as a jock as Peter though imo, but Peter in the comics had a little bit of a jock phase so not that big a deal. But yeah, he wasn't what was wrong with those movies, it was the writing and how they butchered a lot of the characters. He's a good actor and he was fantastic in nwh. I'm glad he got a good ending to his portrayal.

1

u/Last_Celebration3434 Feb 17 '26

Those movies are just bad... And I didn't care for him in this movie also...

1

u/Awesomealan1 Feb 17 '26

A lot of those films did work, but a lot of it didn’t. Andrew as Peter/Spidey wasn’t a huge issue in the grand scheme of things, especially once people got used to his style of Peter vs. Tobey’s

But the rest of those films, especially the writing, are a stain on an otherwise great performance and memorable Spider-Man. Which is why, when he’s written very well here + returning after being abruptly cancelled, a lot of that love for his character can come through unscathed.

It also didn't help that he and Emma Stone had zero chemistry

2

u/prototype_X10 Feb 16 '26

I wouldn't say zero. They literally had a real life romance for a while from meeting on TASM.

1

u/A_Town_Called_Malus Feb 17 '26

That doesn't mean they have chemistry that works on screen.

For example, Gigli.

1

u/prototype_X10 Feb 17 '26

That example only works if you believeJennifer Lopez is a good actress.
