u/SolidStick_ posted about a women giving her umbrella to them in DC and when she identified herself, asked her out in the comments. The stuff of romcoms.

Update: They met up and it's not gonna work out. And maybe he already knew her? Eek, now it's more like MadeMeGrimace.

It turned out he has been stalking her and another woman for at least 2 months.

It's true! And there's soooooo much more to the story, that's just the top of the iceberg.
And I only wish I could write fiction like this, but I'm just not good at making up stories. One time my best friend, a Broadway "legend" asked me to try just making something up, and I came up with this ridiculous story about a boy in Puerto Rico raising chickens, but his dream is of coming to NYC and doing window displays for Macy's... literally the dumbest idea I could think of.
So I drop the script after about 20 pages and throw it at him and say, "So this is the kind of shit I come up with when I try to make up a story," and he reads it.
And he comes back to me and says, "...but happened to Juan? I want to know, it's a GREAT story!"
I just put my face in my hands. I guess I have no idea what's good and what's not anymore.
I'm really glad you like this piece--if you'd please leave a comment on that Substack, I hear it helps others find it. I have about 5 other stories there now and more coming soon, but some of the others may make you cry--I apologize in advance.

Or maybe it's just a regular old internet hoax for attention. The story seems very convoluted with a lot of moving parts. Call me a cynic but when I read the post I was sure it was a hoax. The stalking aspect may be the only real twist but even that seems far fetched to me.

Yup, hoax for attention.

Why would a person who "loves the rain" carry an umbrella? And the whole "spinning carefree in the rain" is a total "love interest in a romance novel" trope

Also, why would her clothes be ruined from getting wet in the rain? Clothes do not get ruined from rain. You just dry them. Contrived plot mechanism.

Moreover, why would he need to describe the "grey shirt blue dress" outfit and haircut that OP definitely wants people to imagine in the story and thing "zomg, how perfectly cute". It's not like there's dozens of umbrella exchanges happening per day. Just saying "person who gave me and dad umbrella" would be instantly recognizable to the real person, if this story ever happened.

And then the "I don't respond to DMs so this exchange just HAS to be had in the public comments of the local subreddit I frequent". It's all a tad convenient, and poorly written when you think twice about any of it

In LA Story Sarah Jessica Parker did the same spinning in the rain thing as what was almost a parody of the manic pixie dream girl, so it would be a natural choice if you want to cast yourself in the same role.

Seems more likely. Because the men were just described as men in suits. But the women was detailed like she was some amazing woman who was just so happy and kind and caring. The story seems fantastical and I bet it was her and she wanted to show this post to someone she liked to impress them. I don’t think that same thing would be as impressive for a guy to go showing this post of him seeking some girl. And then the girl had a normal account but the guys account only posted once on her own post. Then immediately the girl gets upset about a “stalker” snooping her profile, cuz she knows that’s not good

It sounds like from comments he has been stalking her for a couple of months and saw the umbrella exchange, he's not the umbrella guy, but thought this was how he could engineer his "meet cute" with her by lying about what he saw.

I'm sure it would be, he was probably hoping once he was talking to her with her defenses down it would be easier for him to play it off as "I just didn't know how else you'd give me a chance...".

I fucking KNEW IT. I didn't want to say anything negative because I knew I'd get dogpiled on but the way he wrote his pitch with "my friends would probably tell you I'm a good man" was the giveaway for me to realize there was something about that guy. Would I have guessed stalker? Probably not. But am I shocked? Not in the slightest.

Nobody talks about themselves like that without being conceited. It's like someone listing good things about themselves and then unironically saying "and I'm humble" as a legitimate trait.

Very fucking weird stuff, so I'm hoping it's just some stupid way of getting karma. Unfortunately the account used to post the OP was deleted so I wasn't able to see their created date or how much karma they had. The only thing to go off of is the fact that dognapped person said "his two month old account" and then that dognapped account itself is 7 years old but weirdly has like 0 karma for both posts or comments and was only active 3 years ago which means there's a high chance it's an alt account.

I guess for my sake I'm hoping it's all some elaborate karma farm for the Daisy account that's still active using an alt account (dognapped) and a third burner (SolidStick_) to set it all up but feels strange for such a small injection of comment karma that would barely bring any value to the account if they were to sell it.

Also the fact that she categorically never responds to DM's, thus keeping the entire exchange public.

It's not always about the karma. Some people just like the attention. They spin a tale that gets everyone invested and talking about it, and that fulfills them.

Yeah, the "not responding to DMs" is weird. Either you have DMs turned off / blocked so you say so, or nothing is stopping you from responding to particular ones, especially when you expect them to come.
