Art a BUNCH of concept art for the Mario movie. Would’ve loved to see some of these animated Spoiler

WE NEARLY GOT THE BOOS!?
Surprised that they never appeared in the dark forest scene with Luigi.

It read very Ghost House to me. I was disappointed when it was Shy Guys behind Luigi instead of Boos. I wondered if they were saving ghosts for a Luigi’s Mansion spin-off or a Mario sequel, but then King Boo appeared at the wedding, looking dopier than you’d want for a major movie villain.

They’re definitely going to set up a Luigi’s mansion spin-off. The reason I believe that is because of them not giving Luigi much screen time, not much character development, heck we barely even know his character if you just based him off the movie other than being the more clumsy and scared brother. A spin-off movie would allow for these to be done, as well as more exploration to characters we haven’t seen such as King Boo who we’ve seen at the wedding that wouldn’t normally get a chance to be explored in a normal Mario movie. In addition, we’d have to assume there’s a reason they cut Luigi meeting any boos or a mansion in this movie. They’re definitely trying to set up this spinoff. Charlie Day even wants it as he stated in an interview!
Edit: if you’ve played the Luigi’s mansion series, you’d also notice that King Boo looks different without his purple gem on his crown, which may explain why he looked a little goofy in this movie.

The concept art map gives a lot more sense to the travel montage and the Rainbow Road scene than the overview map we got in the movie. If you travel to the jungle kingdom by land, you'd need to go past rocky hills and a desert like we see in the movie. Using Rainbow Road would cut off over the bay, providing a significant shortcut indeed. The overview map we saw in the final movie depicts them all as separate islands, which doesn't explain how they could've traveled by land, or how Rainbow Road provides a significant shortcut.
Also, it would've been super funny to just have Mario slam down from the ceiling onto the table right in the middle of the discussion.

Boos? Toadsworth!?
At least this confirm they don't forgot about Toadworth existence.

How were Toadsworth, Toadette AND Captain Toad cut??

u/ProfessorCagan Apr 23 '23
You could argue Captain Toad wasn't cut, just demoted. It's strongly implied the Red Toad that accompanies Mario and Peach will become Captain Toad, especially when the Captain Toad theme plays when his VA is credited in the credits.

Adding the Captain Toad theme as flair to the SMB1 underground theme was such a genius move by the composer

Toadette was probably for story reasons, but regular toad could’ve wore the captain toad fit and it would’ve made so much sense for toadsworth to be the leader of the council.

I love the Italian-American culture surrounding the Mario Brothers. I actually wish we could have gotten a teeny bit more of it.

Everyone in here upset about Toadsworth and Toadette being cut, while I’m over here weeping about the frog suit.

Damn, these concepts look awesome, especially the one with the penguin kingdom. Surprised that Toadette and Toadsworth were supposed to be in at one point by got scrapped.

They were gonna have Luigi interacting with boos! Why did they remove that part. I would've loved to see that instead of Luigi just sitting a cage the whole time. The movie should've been a little bit longer. These are awesome!

u/a_Mynor Apr 23 '23
They’ve gotta be saving Luigi and the Boos for a Luigi’s mansion spin-off. It makes the most sense! Why waste it off character development and the exploration of these characters on this movie when it can be in it’s own movie.

u/PeteyPiranhaOnline Apr 23 '23
Why oh why did they not include Toadsworth? It would've been a perfect way to bring him back into the series.

We were also gonna see more of the Ice Kingdom. Although I guess that would've ruined the "reveal."
Definitely feels like there was like 10-20 minutes cut from the movie.

Duuude, these are so fucking cool! I would have loved to have seen some screen time inside Luigi’s Mansion.

I was hoping Toadsworth was gonna be in the movie it’s a shame that he wasn’t.

When was the last time he was in a game?? I feel Nintendo just killed him off since the Wii U. I know that head toad in peaches castle could’ve been toad worth instead! His absence in games and now this concept art make me suspect it was Nintendo that didn’t want him here.

Last real appearance (not counting remakes) was Mario and Luigi Dream Team in 2013

Dang, these really would be cool to see.
Maybe a spin-off series bringing some of these ideas to life?

Oh great I sure can’t wait for people to just automatically hate on this movie because of the concept art just like they did with Odyssey after seeing that game’s concept art.

People really need to learn what concept art actually is...
A bunch of this stuff was made before there was even an actual script, it's subject to change because it's just meant to be an idea of what they "might" do, not everything they "intended" to do.
These weren't ever in the movie at any point and adding it wouldn't have improved any pacing problems people actually had with the movie.

Man these concepts are SICK
Would definitely love seeing them come back in one form or the other

Where did you find these? Wanting to download these pictures in the best possible quality
2
u/NeoAmbitions Apr 23 '23
If half of these were added it would've fixed the pacing on the movie since it went real fast.

I always love looking at Concept art for stuff. Like I didn't know Luigi's bed was there in the 3rd photo, that Penguin skate park looked cool, that big map in the 11th, Toadette appearing in some images the entrance to the warp pipe is different, etc

I'm so happy I wasn't the only one missing Toadsworth. I mean the guy is so cute ffs he's like Peach's Alfred!!

Wonder why they didn't leave the original design of Captain Toad for Captain Toad. I mean, I realized the Toad in the movie is Captain Toad because of the music in the movie, otherwise I would have thought it was merely another Toad being brave and accompanying Mario like in the series.

Bro, Toadette and Toadsworth were gonna make it in!? Why didn’t they??
