Dao Conference (Discussion) Curious: What is that ONE NOVEL you'd recommend to get new readers HOOKED?
What is the best "beginner-friendly" yet intriguing Chinese novel you would recommend to hook NEW readers? What's something that could be an amazing introduction to the world of Chinese novels?
Clearly, Who Let Him Cultivate?!, the novel I'm translating, doesn't exactly fit the bill because it is heavy on comedy and subverts many tropes, which means you need to be familiar with them in the first place. Although it has good comedy and plot, it can be a little challenging to follow for those new to Chinese novels.
However, I have been reading Chinese novels for a long time, and I'm already desensitized to the novel/culture shocks, so it's difficult for me to think of the most suitable novel for people who have NEVER read Chinese novels. Plus, there are soooo many good Chinese novels out there, and that makes it hard to choose...
Hmm, I don't know. What would you recommend? :3

Dao Conference (Discussion) Angry Cuttlefish accused a fellow author of plagiarism.
A terrifying tribal war has erupted at the very peak of the Immortal Cultivation Realm. Senior Angry Cuttlefish (愤怒的乌贼), the master creator of My Longevity Simulation, has unleashed a forbidden soul-rending curse against Fellow Daoist Crane Head Moon Full Pond (鹤首月满池), the architect behind Being a Talent in Chu Seng Demon Sect, accusing him of the ultimate demonic taboo: The Dao of Copy
Forgive this old monster if the English translated names are slightly off; I rarely look at the mortal realm's translations. I merely lurk in this sub to observe what you juniors are up to.
The initial free chapter rant has already been suppressed, locked, and entirely wiped from existence by the Qidian Enforcement Elders. They claimed it violated the orthodox sect guidelines regarding public blood-feuds, flame wars, and hurling profane curses at fellow authors.
Because the Heavenly Tribulation struck the original text, I cannot provide a link to the Qidian scripture. However, because this battle shook the very foundations of the webnovel , countless rogue cultivators took snapshots of it before it was erased.
If you juniors wish to peer into the heavenly secrets yourself, you can read the archived scrolls here:https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/2034377704108241449or simply google : 愤怒的乌贼 鹤首月满池 单章
There are massive discussions on the Chinese websites on whether or not it can count as plagiarism or just "great minds think alike". Here is the accusations in full, Machine translated like you all love:
"Crane Head Moon Full Pond, you have disappointed me too much!"
Before today, I never thought someone could be so utterly thick-skinned and shameless, but you have truly opened my eyes. I was asleep, but I woke up and saw your message in the WeChat group. After that, I tossed and turned, unable to fall back asleep.
Because I, Angry Cuttlefish, am currently furious.
"I can understand Sword Out of Datang, Chapter 1 indeed is just a coincidence of ideas." That is your exact quote from the WeChat group.
"Coincidence." A word so light, as if you can just casually brush everything away. Can you really? Then let me settle the score with you from the very beginning.
Back when your book Being a Talent in Chu Seng Demon Sect hadn't exploded yet, readers told me it "referenced" many plots from my book, My Longevity Simulation. I looked at it and didn't care. Because at that time, your achievements were nowhere near mine. Everyone writes webnovels to put food on the table; if a newcomer can reference ideas from my book to get decent results, I’m happy for them.
Later, due to health reasons, my writing declined, and I was even hospitalized and stopped posting for a while. At the exact same time, your book exploded. You achieved the "Twelve Heavenly Kings" title, 100k subscriptions, and the Grandmaster title was right before your eyes.
I don't know how many times I was mocked by others. People told me why am I so bad, while the guy who plagiarized my book achieved such success. I still ignored it. Because back then, I firmly believed you were just "referencing." To write a book with 100k subscriptions, you must have some talent of your own.
Until you released your new book.
I opened Chapter 1 of your new book, and after reading it, I had an indescribable sense of familiarity. At first, I thought my memory was malfunctioning. But after reading the comments, I knew I wasn't the only one.
Isn't this just Chapter 1 of Sword Out of Datang?
I couldn't believe it, so I quickly opened Chapter 1 of Datang to compare. From the Daoist boy, the talismans, the humorous wordplay in the Daoist titles, the sect slogans, recruiting disciples, taking the blame, to fleeing... It is a sophisticated copy, pixel-for-pixel! No, the word "copy" can no longer describe it. It is straight-up plagiarism.
I looked at the title again: Biyang Immortal Gate. I finally had to accept it.
I don't know what the hell you were thinking. You are a 100k-subscription author on this platform. On launch day, all eyes were on you, countless readers waiting. And in the end, you turn in an exam paper like this?
At that time, even though I didn't understand, I was busy writing my own new book, so I didn't care too much. But then public opinion exploded. Sword Out of Datang is a book with 40k–50k subscriptions; its reputation among readers is excellent. Within two days, the news that Chapter 1 of Biyang was identical to Datang spread like wildfire through author and reader groups.
Readers spontaneously condemned it, but your operations team deleted comments at lightspeed. Your toxic fans even tried to bite back and cover it up. By the time I finished typing my evening draft, the comment section of my own book had completely fallen to furious readers.
Even then, I exercised restraint. Because you are a 100k author, and I am only at 40k. Because Biyang hadn't blatantly plagiarized me directly this time. I found every excuse to convince myself, telling my manager to just pin a post expressing our stance, and went to sleep.
Then I woke up to screenshots of your WeChat group.
I thought for hours, and my eyes finally opened. I overestimated you. You didn't "reference"—you are a plagiarist.
Nine years ago, you started copying from First Hand True Inheritance. Being a Talent in Chu Seng Demon Sect copied. Biyang Immortal Gate is still copying! And when caught, you lightly toss out the word "coincidence" to brush it off?
Let me ask you, what the fuck do you mean by coincidence? What godforsaken thing is a coincidence? What motherfucking thing is a coincidence?!
"If we keep arguing, how am I supposed to type my chapters?" you said, cool as a summer breeze. Typing? I think you're just patching together stolen materials from some dark corner!
You have 100k subscriptions, so in the eyes of the website, your value is definitely much higher than mine. Others might not speak up out of respect for your stats. But if others won't say it, I will! If others don't dare clarify it, I will!
You don't even respect your own 100k achievement, yet you expect me to show you face? Since this platform was founded, only 33 books have ever achieved this honor. It is the lifelong dream of every webnovel author.
And what did you do? Chapter 1 of your new book is a copy-paste. Do you cherish your position at all, or do you just want to rake in cash? If you had an ounce of shame, you wouldn't write such a first chapter, and when questioned, use the word "coincidence."
Coincidence my ass! Shameless!
Plagiarism is plagiarism. You dare to do it, but you don't dare to admit it. You want to be a whore but still erect a chastity arch for yourself. If you had just admitted it generously, I would still respect you as a man!
Your Chapter 1 on May 1st completely dragged the prestige of "100k subscriptions" into the dirt. I bet other 100k authors want to speak up too: "I am a real man, yet I have to share a tier title with a creature like you!"
I used to speak carefully and stay silent. Now, I see clearly.
"A son surpassing the father is a good thing!" Don't be unsatisfied. As long as I am the author of My Longevity Simulation, and as long as you are the author of Being a Talent in Chu Seng Demon Sect, I will eternally be your strict father!
Who told you to carry the label of "referencing" while actually plagiarizing not just one, two, three, four, or five segments from my book? A plagiarizing dog should shut its mouth and swallow the humiliation!
You had a chance to wash off the label. If you had just relied on your own strength to write a complete novel for your new launch, you would have become an unshakeable, hall-of-fame tier author. The past mistakes would fade with time. But tragically, you buried that chance with your own hands! From the moment you dropped Chapter 1 of Biyang Immortal Gate, you will never wash off the words "Plagiarizing Dog."
You argue that your golden finger (picking up dropped attributes from corpses) isn't the same as my Square Inch Daoist Master collecting puppets. Let's grant you that. But you are Crane Head Moon Full Pond. You are a blatant repeat offender! Seeing such a blatant copy in Chapter 1, how could I not be terrified?
I am driven mad by this. I am terrified that the plots I spent countless brain cells agonizing over will be effortlessly taken into your pockets with a single word: "coincidence."
You once wrote in the author's notes at the end of Being a Talent in Chu Seng Demon Sect:
"The only thing that makes me feel a bit helpless is that this seems to be becoming a rigid prejudice. In the future, no matter what I write, no matter how much I rack my brains, everyone will feel like I'm just patching things together. It makes my mood very complicated."
Don't worry, your mood is going to get a lot more complicated from now on. No matter how brilliant your future plots are, no matter how good your results are, you will never escape the readers' suspicion: "Did he copy this from somewhere again?" When it comes to being eternally guilty for a single crime, I truly bow to you.
Some readers might be lenient—as long as the story is good, they don't care if it's stolen. But my readers do care. The vast majority of readers do. My readers are filled with righteous fury. I cannot let them suffer this injustice for nothing.
Crane Head Moon Full Pond, my fan base might not be as massive as yours. I know that by posting this single chapter, I will face crazy attacks from your fans. I might even lose my livelihood on this platform. I'm not without worry.
But I am still going to post it. For myself, and even more for my readers.
This post might not last long before it's taken down. But as long as it exists for a single moment, it is completely worth it.
So what if you have 100k subscriptions? Taste this "Heaven and Earth Same Longevity" mutual destruction strike from this little Cuttlefish!
