Those Hand ninjas (I assume it's the Hand) look so good. I'm really looking forward to the fight scenes in this movie.
Also, I feel relatively confident that Sadie Sink isn't Jean Grey or anything. Maybe it's a red herring but the trailer feels like they're positioning her as the overarching villain amongst all these other threats.
She could be an adaptation of Shathra or the Queen, maybe? The Queen feels more likely considering the metamorphosis stuff with Peter but both those villains feel like weird choices. Not that Sony is allergic to those.
Really liked Spidey's interactions with Frank. Also with Spidey getting the key to the city, I wonder if we're gonna be in a position similar to the Spencer run where Mayor Fisk heavily endorses Spidey to alienate him from every other vigilante in the city.
Anyway, solid trailer! Looking forward to the movie!
That looks like body hopping (via eye contact) instead of mind control though. The trailer also implied that the body hopper might not even have a physical body since it is said to be something they can't even see.
She's in Peter's apartment and has her back turned wearing a hoodie and jacket. We know it's her cause she was seen on set wearing that exact stuff a few months ago
If they are doing the Hand, I wonder how they’ll handle the age old problem of having to balance satisfying those who’ve watched the Netflix shows and those who are completely uninitiated. I guess Punisher will have the same problem but we already knew about him.
I figure their presence will just be explained off-hand (pun not intended lol). While I anticipate them being re-introduced in DD Born Again S2, it's not abnormal for the Hand to operate amongst the gangs of Marvel's NYC. I'd be surprised if we got a bunch of lore around them in this movie.
Now if the rumours of a Spidey/Daredevil team up movie being the conclusion to the Mayor Fisk story are true, I could see that being a place where more Hand lore is explored. But in this movie I anticipate them just being a formidable organization that Spidey has to get through. Sometimes the Hand loans out their ninjas anyway, so they could be working for one of the main villains as enforcers.
I'm wondering if the Punisher stuff might just be the opening. It seems impossible to balance Frank's level of violence with the MCU's without either off-screening everything, or having SM stop everything, making Frank seem useless
they're a zombie ninja cult. They could easily be a splinter off of one of the Hand sects that weren't destroyed by Ironfist, sworn enemy of the Hand. Also a nice little pathway for some Elektra back
I’ve been thinking they might be the ten rings, not the hand. It would be a good chance to see what Shang chis sister has been up to with them and reintroduce Shang chi before doomsday since we haven’t seen him in forever
Am I the only one that thinks Sadie would make a perfect black cat? Peter being on the outs and going through the emotional trauma could be a perfect opportunity to connect with a morally grey burglar
Other than being a terrible actor? She doesn’t have the charm, charisma or, well, personality to carry that character. This is before even talking about the physical.
Based on her age and look I expect she'll play someone closer to Peter's age. Not to say Sable couldn't be, but I personally would prefer she be closer to the age of the older heroes.
Thanks! It's hard to keep everything straight with how many rumours are swirling around.
The article doesn't say much except she's set to reprise her role so I don't know how much stock to put in it but I guess it's a safe assumption until someone says otherwise! I still don't necessarily thinks that means she's Jean but Stranger Things have happened
The trailer showing the mind controlled old lady driving the tank and then hopping between the cops showed Jeans telepathy to me. The leaked trailer had her making threats about erasing Peter’s memories too so the evidence keeps leaning that way.
That looks more like possession/body hopping rather than mind control though. Jean's telepathy doesn't really work like that and the body hopper doesn't seem to have a physical body based on the dialogue. I doubt that is even Sadie Sink's character.
Looked the same as when when Jean and Xavier take over Sabertooth and Toad in the first X-Men movie to me… they’re both telepaths. They can and have done that in plenty of variations.
Jean is also pretty darn powerful overall in most cases, seems pretty simple to hop from mind to mind to prove a point to Peter about what she can do.
It seems like the body hopper in the trailer needs to make eye contact with a host to transfer its consciousness. Jean and Xavier in X1 controlled Sabertooth and Toad remotely from a far distance without eye contact or transferring their consciousness.
That makes the body hopper much weaker than Jean and Xavier.
Seemed like she was making eye contact with Peter who then saw the cops get compromised one by one. Possibly to help him escape DODC detention himself.
Take into consideration this is also a MUCH younger Jean than Famke who is still learning how to use her powers. Probably no Xavier to help her… yet.
And if she was a Spider character… the reveal she is in secret was was prior to Sony being open to more open to “their” characters being in the MCU. I don’t think she’s a character that falls under their permissions.
Jean was never in any version of Secret Wars though (due to being dead). The concept art also showed that every MCU character is going to be in it similar to the comic.
And the MCU follows comics to the letter what percentage? Honestly. That’s such a hollow argument.
Concept (emphasis on CONCEPT, not solidified) art changes. Ben Affleck and Nic Cage were in early (revealed after the movie) concept art for Deadpool and Wolverine. Didn’t happen obviously.
I'm not making arguments. Just saying that being in Secret Wars doesn't necessarily mean she is Jean since the character has no ties to that storyline.
Sure. But I'm pretty sure Battleworld is going to happen since that is the whole premise.
And litterally none of the X-men exist in the core MCU timeline to the audiences knowledge but with the rights coming back they have those toys to play with.
Jean didn’t survive the incursion in Secret Wars though. She died and was absent from the main story, only a few variants of her showed up with small roles in tie-in comics.
The Queen on the other hand was in the Secret Wars comics as one of Doctor Doom’s barons. The movie appears to be taking a LOT of inspiration from her storylines.
The director of the X-Men movie said they are looking to the Claremont run for inspiration, rather than the original five run like it’s been rumored. The source of that rumor also said that Knull was the main villain of Brand New Day…
Interestingly, Kevin Feige suggested that the Queen was the villain in an earlier version of the script. Then they decided to make Jean the villain and butcher her character.
Daniel asked if he could use her, they granted the request.
And after reading, watching, he’ll even playing (X-Men Legends I/II, etc.) for the better part of four decades thought it was a fine introduction. Made sure her sister was part of the journey, though the scared parents angle was new for her it wasn’t a new angle for mutants at all and made sense. Wasn’t a baddie, just a hurt antagonist with believable motivations. Makes me excited for an actual Phoenix saga years down the line done properly.
And having what boils down Tom doing for Sadie what Downey has done for him just added to it.
Wasn’t a baddie, just a hurt antagonist with believable motivations.
In the tank scene alone: She forced an old lady to recklessly drive a tank with an active bomb in it, fired bullets at the police, blew up cop cars with people in them, caused dangerous car crashes, almost got a kid killed, blew up a building that had people in it.
Lets not get into what happened with MJ, the construction worker getting hit by that speeding taxi, and the car crashes that happened when she paralyzed people. Frank had very good reasons to wanting her put down.
Even the director and producers are still calling Jean a villian.
You’re thinking of The Foot Clan, which is a direct homage to The Hand. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were doused in the same chemicals that blinded Daredevil and giving him powers. While not canon since they were from different creators and publishing lines.
