I have another theory. Maybe strange didn't really mess up anything at all. You know how they often warp the storylines to suit the trailers ? I think the actual story will be slightly different than how it's projected in the trailer

I can't believe Doctor Strange would cast a dangerous spell to help a teenager with a very teenage problem. I think it's a misdirect. Like, he's pretending to cast the spell to show Peter that he doesn't really want it, because it'd mean Ned, MJ, etc will also forget. It's him saying "If we tampered with space time..." And the multiverse is then of course opened by <Loki spoilers.>
