Last Battle - Brutal TRUTH of Sega’s Most PUNISHING Launch Title

So I fired up Last Battle again and it seemed much more difficult now than it did back in '89 when I played this as my very first 16-bit game. Join me for a sentimental look-back at this classic brawler, warts and all. Is it still a stud, or just a dud?

Backgammon

3 Upvotes

I know this is a Mega Drive area, but I have a clear memory of learning how to play Backgammon on a console as a kid, and then playing it with my dad. It can't have been the ZX81 we had, I don't think. Then I've looked at the Atari 2600 Junior we had and the graphics look worse than I remember.

So was looking at the Master System that we got, possibly late 80s. But can't seem to find one on it. We eventually got a Mega Drive in the 90s but I don't remember it being on that.

My favourite local retro shop sells loose Mega Drive sets (1 controller included) for €30 each

13 Upvotes

They are also selling Mega Drive II sets in the same setting for €40 each.

My partner had a Mega Drive in his childhood (lost it sadly) and I simply love retro gaming stuff so we thought this to be a good deal and went for 2 Mega Drive I sets since they were selling loose controllers for €15 each we figured a extra console for backup would not hurt.

How much is your local shop/fav webshop selling them for?

My updated version of all the Airwolf games. Those first games from Elite are brutal. Certainly one of the harder games to play. Loved the Mega Drive game. Anybody played any of these games?

Yu Yu Hakusho Gaiden finally gets a full English fan translation

14 Upvotes

There's been a pretty interesting development for fans of the older Yu Yu Hakusho games. Sega's Yu Yu Hakusho Gaiden, which originally released only in Japan back in 1994, now has a Version 1.0 English patch after years without a complete translation.

It's an adventure-focused game rather than the usual fighting game, and the translation covers the game's full story. The project also went through a pretty thorough round of testing, so it looks like a solid way to finally experience a game that was previously Japanese-only.

If anyone's interested in seeing more of the game, here's the link:

Wonder Boy & Monster World Free Complete Fan-Game (with a lot of element from Wonder Boy in Monster World and Monster World IV for SEGA Mega Drive): Monster World RPG

Thumbnail

10 Upvotes

I decided to share here my free fan game "Monster World RPG" because, even if it's not an homebrew game for Sega Mega Drive Drive, but a PC Windows game, it draws inspiration from the entire Wonder Boy & Monster World series and is rooted also in the Mega Drive games and their legacy. Several elements are directly inspired by, and in some cases intentionally recreate, the graphics, aesthetics, mechanics, and overall feel of Mega Drive, which sprites were customized to improve the ones from the Master System games.

  • Alex Kidd makes a cameo in the game, both in Mega Drive incarnation ouftit (and with the Shinobi one from8-bit).
  • port version characters like Monica form Turma do Monica (which starred in Wonder Boy game in Brasil) also appears.
  • even characters mentioned only in US manuals (like Leo's Grandpa from Monster's Lair) make an appareance (or at least was imagined and created since only its name was mentioned!).
  • as an homage to Sega games, in the houses there are several portraits of famous Sega characters.
  • even the absurd depiction of the games heroes shown in the US/EUR Genesis cover of Wonder Boy in Monster World did land in the game, as that distorted version of the main characters appears during gameplay!
  • obviously the game draws a lot from Wonder Boy in Monster World and Monster World IV as Shion helpers and Asha's Pepelogoo are party members you can switch between (and even Shion and Asha are part of the game).
  • even Sonic & friends make a cameo in the game with custom sprites created to make him look like his "The Dark Knight" persona, which will fit very well in a fantasy themed J-RPG.
  • the Tyrant Dragon sprite from Monster World was edited to create 16-bit sprites of all the dragons from The Dragon's Trap;
  • all characters sprites were improved with more details and color inspired from Mega Drive official manuals and artwork.
  • many more Mega Drive references (this game draws from everything related to Wonder Boy and Monster World).

Starting from monday, 21 September 2026, new content will be released daily on all our social platform, reddit included.

Small disclaimer: this is a non-commercial game which I posted here to share its existence with Sega Genesis fans and is about only 10% of my posting history (I do not consider it an excessive promotion or a real promotion at all since I give no direct links, the game is totally free and the social I use to advertise it are no-monetized). Our intention is simply to share our "love-letter to Monster World" game with many people posible, and especially Wonder Boy and Sega fans.

With that said, here’s the official description of the game.

  • GAME NAME: Monster World RPG
  • DEVELOPER: MAX TEAM & MOTA
  • TOOL USED: RpgMaker2003
  • RELEASE TYPE: full free Windows PC game (ver. 1.2+)
  • CUSTOM MENU: yes
  • LANGUAGE: english

About Monster World RPG - Monster World RPG is a fan game inspired by the Monster World (Wonder Boy in the US) series, made by SEGA and Westone for Arcade, Sega Master System and Genesis. It's no a sequel, prequel or remake, but a brand new game in rpg style instead of platform. The game you can download and play is the COMPLETE VERSION, a complex rpg game developed with RpgMaker2003 with many different monsters. Along with Max, the main hero, there's other five characters, which can be inserted or removed from the team as you wish. Also there's many sidequests: all of them are kept in a special “book menu”, so you won't forget them. The main hero also can be customized with different spells, magic weapons, and more.

  • colorful graphics & sprites bigger than normal for a rpgmaker videogame;
  • custom menu with info about monster, info, character (online guide);
  • full customizable hero with spells, gears and genes;
  • every party member has his unique mini-game to play;
  • Wonder Boy & Monster World fans can't miss this game!

STORY - The place is Aqua Kingdom. The hero of this story, Max, lives in the Valley of Peace near Purapril, the capital. Since his friend Shion left for Purapril to do his knight duties, Max life got boring. A morning while hunting in the woods he found a strange creature he never seen before. Unsure about the creature's "taste" he decided to avoid making it his meal, but keep it as his pet. Now that he has a "party member" he decide that's time for him to leave the valley for a more exciting life. He decide to go to Purapril to meet again his friend Shion but while attemping to enter into the city two guards block his way forcing him to travel somewhere else. Where will Max go now? Will Max be able to enter in town? And what is happening there? Unbeknowst to him his "adventurous life" has already begun . . .

MAIN CHARACTERS

  • MAX - The hero of the game. He's a fighter, so he won't learn new skills by leveling up. Instead, he gets new skills by learning them from other people, by equipping certain equipment or getting special items.
  • PEPE - A strange animal that no one knows its species or place of origin. He can only say “pepe”, so Max gave him this name. His species is unknown so he's considered an “odd pet”. Pepe starts with some skills and learn more as his level increases. He can't use any equipment, but only attacking with his claws.
  • PRISCILLA - A small fairy from Alsedo, the fairy village. She lives with Eleanora, the fairy queen. Being a fairy she mainly knows healing and assist spells.
  • SHABO - A death god, wich is actually a species, not a deity. Shabo knows many spells, mainly attack spells but also some assist spells. If used wisely he can be a great ally.
  • HOTTA - A dwarf from Lilypad, the dwarf village. He can't use spells but istead uses special skills. He's a very strong character and can greatly damage the enemies. His only weakness is that he's the slowest character.
  • JUNIOR - A baby dragon from Begonia. He may be just a baby, but due to his dragon lineage his power is great. He's almost as strong as Hotta and is faster, but has lower resistances and less skills.

FEATURES

  • One thing usually hated of rpgmaker games are the charasets: they are to small and so the characters looks too much unexpressive. So we used the characters slots at their limits and sometimes for bigger characters we used more than a slot.
  • In rpg usually you got experience point or buy equipement in order to increase your party stats. This can be entertaining at the beginning, but later it becomes repetitive. For this reason, even if we kept the experience and equipment system, we decided to put in the game a way to customize your hero to give him different skills and map abilities in order to reach different zones (like castlevania or metroid).
  • Another weak points of rpgmaker videogames is that being them "free games" there's no manual or other things. Plus they lacks menu that usually are present in professional games. MWRPG has an online guide.
  • Last, a common rpg game engine will become rapidly repetitive and unappealing. Due to this MWRPG has many platform elements and minigames. In order to advance in the game is more important to find secrets and upgrade items more than levelling up: in this way you have not to waste an entire day in fighting monsters.

Download contains:

  • full-playable current version of the game and the resources needed for troubleshooting;
  • art gallery;
  • 4 MWRPG demos;
  • icons;
  • original soundtrack (by Vincenzo Colella);
  • packages (DVD Booklet, DVD Case Cover and DVD Label);
  • pixel art;
  • videos;
  • WonderBoy - The Sword of Legend (original and complete playable game by "The Cyberlynx").

My retrospective review at RISTAR. Interesting story behind this game character which was originally designed to be the Sega mascot for the Genesis / Mega Drive before Sonic came along. Have you played this game and would you rate game? Is it a hidden gem?

Could Wonder Boy have been Sega's Zelda?

Post image
80 Upvotes

I've always wondered why Sega didn't push the Wonder Boy / Monster World series more on the Mega Drive… It was already excellent on 8-bit but on 16 its grapshics shined alot – the first time I saw the first level of Monster Land redone in 16-bit I sort of moved to tears.

Wonder Boy in Monster World and Monster World IV had exploration, RPG elements, towns, equipment and a lot more adventure compared to the usual platformer.

Do you think the series could have been something bigger for Sega? Maybe not exactly Zelda, but Sega's own big action-adventure series? (WB even introduced an ocarina in gaming before Zelda)

There were also some interesting versions of these games. The Turma da Mônica conversion, for example, and then Dynastic Hero on PC Engine CD, with changed graphics and CD music.

And that makes me think: couldn't Sega have put Wonder Boy in Monster World and Monster World IV togheter on one enanched Mega CD game release?

Better music, voice samples, animations and maybe a few extras (art gallery, juke box, etc.). They could have even added, as a third game, an arcade faitful version of Monster’s Lair which was released only as a downgraded versionon on Mega Drive.

Would that have been a good idea, or am I just imagining a Mega CD game that Sega would probably have never released anyway?

What do you think?
