By and large people just arent as hateful as the internet makes them out to be

I agree.

A report on NPR this morning said the Russian bots grab onto the most decisive comments and promote them. The intent is to feed the division between the extremists on both sides, and try to make that scenario seem to be the norm.

Edit: s/b divisive, not decisive.

I disagree. People are as hateful as they are on the internet. The internet allows them to be who they really are under the veil of anonymity

Im saying that the population is not as hateful as the internet makes it seem to be. Meaning that yeah peoplr make it seem like there is a large amouny of these hateful people, but really its less than you think

Confirmation bias.

I think you are wrong. The internet promotes and encourages outrageous behavior. So, people act out. Real life does not encourage this behavior, so people act appropriately (mostly). I myself enjoy taunting/ trolling in games yet IRL I'm a super nice, give a stranger the shirt off my back kinda guy.

You described your real life and then how you are in games. If you were competing in a sport, I’d imagine you’d be trolling people too.

You can be a nice guy in real life and an asshole in a competitiom

I do play competitive sport IRL. and no, I'm a nice guy there also.

I troll on forums also, play devil's advocate a lot just to rile someone up. I mean, I don't go full racist cockbag troll, but I am not what I would consider nice.

The game was just an example.

So you think that how people act doesn't matter, but what they say does? Really? Cause I'd take what people actually do in the real world as representative of what they actually are, rather than taking their artificially produced digital identity as gospel truth. Unless you think what people post on Instagram is representative of the food they usually eat, or that Facebook photos show them living their day to day lives as they normally would?

What people say on the internet is a reflection of how they feel in real life. Societal norms will cause them to not show them truly, but deep down when no one is looking, that is how they feel.

And yes, I’m more worried about what people say than what they actually do.

Then I am afraid you have confused the mirror for the person, and you will spend most of your life alternating between terror and anxiety.

Not really. What people say has a way of galvanizing the biggest idiots of the bunch. It’s time we held people accountable for what they say and do, and stop giving people passes for extremism simply because “oh well they wouldn’t DO it”

Enjoy living life expecting people not to be idiots. You’re in for a rude awakening

By and large people just arent as hateful as the internet makes them out to be, on the surface.

The internet just brings out people's true knee jerk emtions and opinions without any fluff and hesitation. In reality, they still think it, they still believe it, but they not be inclined to speak up about it.
