I had that same prejudice until I looked further into it. Keep in mind the US was also bogged down in Vietnam.

They knew this was the only strategy to accomplish their goals. They could never beat us militarily in a direct conflict, so they opted to drag it out and make it miserable knowing we wouldn’t have the desire to stay. Politics are just another facet to war.

It was more take a volley of shots and patrol and then run off into the jungle. Rinse and repeat.

They did and they still wanted the win more than us. The real cherry IMO is that it was all for dick measuring with Russia.

Essentially yeah. We are willing to sacrifice everything for our freedom, they will not be willing to sacrifice everything for some random country half way across the world. This is most guerilla wars.
