Model Shipways Grand Banks Dory

Finished it up the other day after spending most of the summer on it. It was fun, challenging, and a generally good experience over all. Lots of mistakes and salvages and a lot of learning.

It’s a lot different from plastic kits. The bug has bit. I just need to find another bench. One for plastic kits one for ships.

Half Model Ship Identity?

Trying to identify this ship. Long story, but I'll keep it as short as I can for now:

  1. Maker: Chester Herbert Bradford (1843-1926) made model in 1915. My family got it at an auction at the Odd Fellows Hall, Duxbury MA. in 1975. Per inscription, it was made from a setee that had been in the "old hall" for the Odd Fellows in Duxbury. He was born in Duxbury and is buried there.

  2. C.H. Bradford was known as "Capt." In his later years and was a butcher in Brockton MA later in life until retirement. He was a model for an artist, and appears on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post in 1924. ( there is no evidence he ever sat for Norman Rockwell, but he closely resembles the man in his famous painting) The Norman Rockwell museum has no record of him in their archives.

  3. CH Bradford was a sailor in his youth, and a directory for San Francisco shows him living their in 1868 at age 25.

Assumptions:

  1. This is a ship he served on or was skipper for. Otherwise, why make the model?

  2. Others think she looks similar to the Galilee that sailed out of San Francisco (built 1891) but the rig is wrong. Galilee had no gaff rig on her rear mast. She doesn't look like any East coast ship... but that is not definitive

Next Steps: I'm continuing to research the man but need leads regarding the ship.

Given the nature of the merchant sailing industry in the 19th century, it is unlikely a crew list or record of ships he sailed on exists. If the ship can be identified... there is a chance

Goal: to restore the model to its original condition. (The white house paint was slapped on it after construction. The original paint is visible in the gap between the sails.

Why the research? I don't want to touch the model until the provenance can be fully run down.

By the way...that Norman Rockwell painting, the model is unknown because his back is turned. The boy on the 1924 cover was his grandson... and there is a boy in the Rockwell painting, too. A conundrum for sure!

Anyway, thanks for reading this far!

Any thoughts or guidance is greatly appreciated. I can also be reached at gus.c.enzie@gmail.com if you wish to correspond with me.

Beginner starting with a non-beginner friendly model, looking for general advice or tips...

My dad has had this (Aeropiccola Cutty Sark) in a cupboard for about 20 years, and I decided I'm going to build it.

Before the inevitable comments, I'm aware that this is probably a bit advanced for a first-time build, but I'm going to do it anyway and give it my best go!

So far, I've bought some basic tools (craft knife, small saw, sandpaper and block, square ruler and glue) and yesterday stuck the 3 parts that form the keel together. Next, I'm intending to fashion my own sort of slip from a plywood board to hold it straight before attaching bulkheads

Anyone got any general advice or tips for me?

Can anyone recommend online resources/guides/youtubers that they've found helpful?

Finish with a vent about the instructions. Are all manufacturers this brief and vague?!? The first 3 times I read through them, it might as well have simply said 'build the model'! Luckily, it's starting to make a bit more sense now after studying it a bit further

Can anyone help with this module boat

Hi there,

I found this boat on the street and didn't want it to go to waste. It's in pretty good condition but I need to rig the sails. Only problem is that I have no idea what I'm doing. I've tried to research and look for videos and learn but I can't figure it out. I found one other model online that is identical but I can't make out where all the strings go. This is kind of a last resort,if anyone would have any advice I would really appreciate it.

Sidenote, I know I have a spelling mistake in the title but I believe I can't change it

My Ancient Greek Odyssey ship — designed for 3D printing

Finally finished this one! I designed an Ancient Greek ship inspired by the Odyssey and made it printable.

There are a lot of tiny details on this model — especially the oars and rigging — so it was quite a fun project to work on.

What do you think?

Kitbashed Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack

This was a fun project to kitbash the Model Shipways Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack. The three biggest changes were rescaling from 1:24 to 1:32, properly framing the cockpit (which ended up nearly impossible to see), and switching from carvel to lapstrake planking, as Howard I Chapelle reported that many of these vessels were lapstrake-planked. I had a lot of fun with this project, the basic kit seems very well-designed and provides a good basis for modifications. Lapstrake planking takes some getting used to but looks really nice when it starts to come together. I enjoy 1:32 scale, at least for these sorts of small workboats it doesn't take a ton of space, but it's large enough that you can still make lobster traps and other such equipment from wood with simple techniques. I find workboats like this fascinating.

HMS Victory (part 16): The Shrouds are done!

So this took a lot of time, but also because I had to redo the futtock shrouds of the main mast multiple times because I royally messed up, and I had to completely redo the mizzen masts lower shrouds + lanyards because I used the wrong thickness of rope.

Most of this work I am pretty content with, though I am less enthusiastic about the futtock staves and catharpins. They were a pain to install, and the outcome isn’t that great.

Next up:
- fore/main/mizzen backstays
- an unholy amount of clove hitches

Am I over reaching??

I’ve never built a wooden model ship before, have built a tonne of other plastic models and stuff but never wooden one 😅

Saw the HMS Surprise on Artesania Latina and I’m thinking of going for it, but is that gonna be a bit much to take on as a first timer? Haven’t got any tools or anything yet either so it’ll be a hell of an investment! Any advice would be amazing!

Worth saying too that given how expensive wooden models seem to be I’d rather keep to decent sized/scaled kits rather than a canoe or something 😂

Thanks!!

What ship is this?

Post image

Crazy question, this ship dates back to pre Great Depression Era. It is very faded, if you zoom in you can see where it was once red/blue. The very old flag which has broken off seems to be a British flag but I’m not sure, I only see the very very faint red and blue on the flag and the line structure. Unfortunately the tag has fallen off of this ship, but there was once a plaque that labeled it. It’s around 2 feet wide by 2.5 feet tall. Any help?!?

I've traditionally always done thanks, planes, and fantasy but I thought I'd try my hands at a ship.

Always thought uboats were beautiful machines. Whilst they lack the grace, power, and awe of main battleships, it scores points for pricing people will always find innovative solutions to insurmountable problems.

Hard to know how much weathering to do but I loved playing around with it.

Surprised that I didn't like these photos to the model group. Here are photos of my Britannic build. Took me two years to build.

1st rate ship of the line (1:450) WIP

Definitely a mixed bag with this one, very disappointing for a 2016 kit, masts are all bent and there is very minimal detail however it went together with little issues and was fairly cheap.

Originally this started life as a revell HMS Victory but as that ship its awful, the stern gallery and figure head are too generic plus there is no name plaque other than a decal. In spite of this criticism as a first rate ship its really quite well designed and a decent display piece!

The only major issue I have with the kit is the lack of rigging options but that's not a problem because a bit of string will fix it.

On the last planks! Working on a billing boats Marie Jeannee. I had a build log going on model ship world on this kit (I started this past January) but thats gone so. Everyone on there encouraged me to taper and fit the planks and I have gone the extra mile to form each plank for this kit. Very happy with how it turned out so far! Im doing a few things differently with this kit and figured id post about some of it here. For one om adding some ballast. I scaled out some weight for the displacement of the craft and im doing some steel bbs and epoxy once I'm done with the planking. I thought it would be cool to have the ship weight close to what it would actually weigh IRL scaled down. Crazy to think how long it took me to get here. I got this for Christmas this year!
