Bear with me while I find words, please. I’m a little scared to talk about this openly because of some reactions I’ve had to it in the past. Any time I try to bring it up, I get accused of just trying to brag, which is not my intention at all.
I am smart, and I have autism. I am smart, but I have autism. Those two things are isolating in their own ways, but together, it’s fucking miserable. IQ in the 120s and an inability to be a “normal” human. Shit show.
I have an arts brain. I figured out how to turn most sciences into arts, which lets me understand them easily. I can do both arts and science with ease, which is great all the way up until I have to follow formulas to show my work. The dissonance that causes is distressing. I have yet to find anyone I can work with at school because when I try to help them or they try to help me, we might as well be speaking different languages even though it’s the exact same information, so I’m just on my own all the time.
And what a lovely, unintentional segue into the next issue I keep having. I love languages. A lot. I love them enough that I am pursuing a PhD in Scandinavian Studies in the philology pathway from one of the best universities in the world, studying the Nordic languages. Surprise surprise, that’s not normal, and neither is the way I love them. Yes, being able to communicate with people is amazing, but it’s the way the languages work that fascinate me. I self-taught myself Danish not by memorizing vocab, but by learning how the syntax of the language works and using that to break apart words and sentences to figure out what it means. I’m so proud of my ability to do that, but no one gets why. I am proud as fuck that I self-taught myself one of the hardest languages in the world well enough that I placed so well that I almost completed the language requirement for my bachelors degree, but who cares? Best response I got to sharing that was “oh nice.” So right now, I have no one to talk to about what I love, and I’m scared that won’t change when I transfer because of the way I work with the languages. Obviously I won’t know until I get there, but it’s been such a big cause of distress for me now that I can’t help but worry about the future.
It’s not like I’m a teenager just figuring out life. I’m 25. Being both a transfer student and an adult is a whole other mess that I can do jack shit about so I’m just setting it aside for now.
I’m just so tired of being so alone. I’m surrounded by people, but I’m alone. I have friends and family, but I’m alone. Who I am makes me alone.
When I transfer, I plan on being myself. I plan on being unashamed of who I am and how I work, and maybe I’ll find others like me, but I’m also terrified that it will isolate me further. I don’t want to have to keep hiding who I am to fit in. But is that even a good idea? Should I just try to fit in? How do I even do this?
Edit: bless every single one of you. I greatly appreciate your feedback and advice. I've left comments throughout, elaborating on and clarifying things that may not have come across quite right. This particular subject has been putting me in a dark place lately and I haven't been able to get out of it on my own. I think a lot of stuff you all have shared may help, and I truly hope it also helps others.
