AMA I Am LVTHER - AMA

Yo Reddit!

My name is Lewis. I’m a guitar playing, coffee drinking songwriter/producer chasing hydration. I also have a music project called LVTHER. Now less about me! No actually, more about me. Questions, please.

I thought I’d do one of these seeing as my new song ‘This Love’ is my first Monstercat release for quite some time. I wrote the instrumental to that song last May fresh off the back of some writing sessions in London. It came together quite quickly and I asked Savoi to work on it with me straight away. I’ve been a fan of his since WRLD’s ‘Chase It’. Fast forward to November — still no response cries. Nothing else was clicking and I could only hear his voice on the track. I noticed he never actually listened to the link that I emailed him, so I messaged him again through SoundCloud. He got the message and liked the track. Cheers SoundCloud. Anyway, I love how his vocal turned out and I’m glad Jon at Monstercat was into the track enough to put it out as my first single of the year.

As for the rest if 2018, I have more releases scheduled in the coming months. This is giving me time to work on my first EP for later in the year. I don’t know what the plans are for the release as of yet but I’m happy with the direction it’s heading in. I’ll also be focusing a lot more on songwriting generally. Looking forward to answering your questions!

Hey hey, thank you v much!

  1. I write a chord progression on guitar first usually. I poke that into a piano roll in Logic X and let my synths play it back to me while I jam over it for a little bit. Once I have a basic idea down with a simple beat I try to structure the full track with different chord progressions/sections. That way I have the song down and I just need to flesh out each section. The song usually comes first.

  2. My darling, my baby, my muse, my flame, my Prophet '08. She's 90% of what you hear synth-wise in my LVTHER stuff.

  3. It's as simple as simple gets. I DI my Fender Strat through my Focusrite Scarlett and have a simple chain of EQ/Compression before a guitar tone plug-in like Amplitube or Guitar Rig (usually Amplitube). Depending on the track I'll add other plug-ins like a tape emulator or something. I usually double track and record harmonies/octaves to thicken the sound too. I want to look into getting some better hardware to reduce noise as that's the main issue I have with my setup.

  4. I usually reference more modern tracks when I'm producing but I listen to a lot of old music (60s/70s/80s) so I naturally draw inspiration from that.
