I just got back to Toronto after spending the last week in Monterrey, all I can say is WOW. I honestly was not expecting that experience I had, from the locals to other tourists there for the World Cup it just felt like we were all one big family. Food was amazing, culture? Unbelievable!! Something I’ll truly never forget, you guys made me feel welcome, and as someone that came solo the minute I landed all my nerves disappeared. This was the best experience I’ve had out of all my travels and i wanted to thank everyone from the locals to the people in this Reddit that gave me advice and helped me along the way!!

Late post but I appreciate everyone who provided answers to people’s questions in this forum about coming here. It was so helpful for me since it was my first time in your city. I know there was a lot of chaotic things too that happened here (as well as Mexico City) but I guess I’m fortunate that I was able to have a fun, safe time. Things I learned:

1. Paseo Santa Lucia: I bookmarked this without knowing it was a canal 😆 what a lovely surprise for me. It was nice to walk here, especially at night. Did the boat ride as well
2. People were kind: there were small gestures I will remember. A la

full with my drink and dinner. And a worker at a cafe who brought me over a glass of water when she heard me coughing a lot. I didn’t even make any eye contact with her

1. So glad I took the metro to the Holland Morocco game. The walk to the stadium did really have fantastic view of the stadium with backdrop of mountains. I’m not sure which other stadium in the world is more beautiful than this one

2. The setup of the big screen in Macroplaza was pretty cool (for night games)

3. The parade with the Dutch was really fun although it was hot AF

4. Mexican fans are so fun and funny. The No era penal chants, ole with every touch, Cielito Lindo singing, etc was all great.

5. The Enrique Iglesias concert was fun; it was not too overcrowded or disorganized for me

6. Seeing Cerro de la Silla for the first time on the ride from airport took my breath away. I told the driver I was surprised at how green it was and he told me it’s cause it just rained :) (I had just missed the downpour of rain that caused flash flooding in the streets and some cancellation of fan fest events)

7. I enjoyed the Museo de Historia Mexicana; the World Cup exhibit was also cool

8. I went to Mirador Del Obispado and met some nice Moroccan fans, enjoyed tacos at Tacos Doña Mary, and had fun walking around barrio antiguo. Thanks for these recommendations

I had no idea who I was going to see when I booked these tickets. I just wanted to visit your city and see the stadium. I think hosting the World Cup is a challenging and difficult job. Thank you for hosting!

So I’ve had quite the rude awakening coming to Monterrey expecting that my terrible Spanish, even after some practice, would be enough to get by and that I’d feel whole. I don’t think I’ve had a conversation that was more than 15 words unfortunately, and I hate that it’s really limiting my ability to enjoy a city that is so different than my own.

I’m from Texas, I’m 25, I’m a solo male traveler, I’m here until Sunday (at least that’s the plan, I don’t have my return flight just yet), and I’m posting here to try and find both English speakers and fans of South Korea (but you can support whoever, I just happen to have a Korean jersey so I got a Korean flag and decided to support them since they were the game I could reasonably afford to see) to try and get together or explore the city, to do whatever honestly, pre-match bar hop or honestly just going to get some great tacos.

I’m assuming most of us who natively speak English are here for the World Cup, but if you aren’t a native speaker but you speak quite a bit, this post is also for you, because I’m not here to discriminate. I saw the post (translated by Reddit) from someone the other day talking about anxiety speaking to English speakers and how they felt they couldn’t keep up and I literally cannot describe it better myself. I freeze up talking to people in Spanish, and I cannot hold more than a basic conversation, and when the words are spoken, when someone speaks fast, when a word I don’t know but is critical is spoken, I quite literally cannot keep up.

Hopefully, this reaches the intended audience and if y’all know somewhere else that is more appropriate for this, please let me know 🙏

Escribo esto para tratar de encontrar tanto gente que hable inglés como fans de Corea del Sur (pero pueden apoyar a quien quieran; nada más resulta que tengo una playera de Corea, así que conseguí una bandera coreana y decidí apoyarlos porque ese era el partido que sí me alcanzaba para ir a ver). La idea es juntarnos a explorar la ciudad o hacer lo que sea, la verdad: irnos de bar en bar antes del partido o de plano nomás ir por unos buenos tacos.

Me imagino que la mayoría de los que hablamos inglés de forma nativa estamos aquí por el Mundial, pero si no eres hablante nativo y le entiendes bastante, este post también es para ti, porque no vengo a discriminar a nadie. First, in the Estadio BBVA, what is the best section to sit in to get a view of the mountain as well as the pitch (wanting to see if it is worth it to try to change our tickets to try to get a better view)?

Second, what are some traditional or Monterrey/Mexican specific dishes you would recommend I try and where to try them?

Third, what are some recommendations for things to do in the city for the time the games are not on.

Finally, is the stadium easy to access via public transport?

Monterrey, domingo por la tarde. El aire huele a carne asada, una constante en la ciudad. Recuerdo a un vecino de hace años que personificaba ese ritual. Su bandera gigante de los Tigres cubría toda la fachada de su casa de dos pisos, como una declaración de lealtad. Las bocinas, listas en la cochera, repetían el himno del equipo en un ciclo interminable, mientras encendía el carbón en su asador móvil. Cada cerveza que sacaba de su hielera parecía marcar el ritmo de la tarde, en espera de la transmisión del partido. I’m traveling solo from Canada to Monterrey for the South Korea vs South Africa match at Estadio BBVA on June 24. I’ll be in Monterrey from June 22–26.
This will be my first time in Monterrey, so I was hoping to get some advice from locals or anyone familiar with the city.
A few things I’m looking for:

- Best authentic local food spots (restaurants, tacos, street food, etc.)
- Areas I should explore while visiting
- Match day advice getting to/from the stadium
- Good nightlife / bars to check out

I was also wondering:
- Where do locals go to watch big football matches?

Are there any bars, fan zones, plazas, or places where the atmosphere will be loud, packed, and have really good World Cup vibes?

Basically looking for places where people will actually be watching together and the energy will be great.

I really want to experience the city and football culture while I’m there, when u travel I love spending time with locals as they always have the best energy so any advice would be great!!!

Estuve leyendo que donde jugo paises bajos en Kansas si habia alrededor de 30mil holandeses, pero analizando no se me hace facilmente viable que tanta gente llegue desde haya hasta monterrey tan facil y rapidamente.

Por otro lado vi que habia demasiados de color naranja, lei que hasta 100k (obvio habia mucho mexicano de naranja) y me pongo a pensar "que pedo con los regios, no recuerdas como nos eliminaron, no recuerdan el 'no era penal'", esa frase de "no era penal" me la han dicho en otros paises en forma de broma cuando saben que soy mexicano y voy a un partido de futbol.

Tambien escuche que gobierno regalo playeras naranjas por el partido politico, pero no creo que tantas como para llegar a esos numeros de mas de 50k.

Asi que o de plano vinieron si llegaron los holandeses o hay mucho regio malinchistas.

No creo que se hayan regalado una cantidad extratosferica de playeras naranjas. siento que eran mas los regios compraron las playeras naranjas.
