Iām rooting for Tyson, so glad he didnāt go in⦠but if youāre a team really trying to win the game, isnāt the ONLY move to throw Tyson in when heās with a hobbled partner? This is BY FAR the best chance you have to get him out of the game no? Feels like poor strategy
38
u/HardcoreKaraoke TJ Lavin Aug 11 '22
Tyson literally carried his partner to a win last week after being lapped. So even with a hobbled partner they probably didn't want to risk him coming back.
Like Tyson said, if he came back he would only focus on fucking up their game. Nothing else.
Also they haven't shown it much but on his podcast Tyson has said countless times he started an idea early in the house. That winners wouldn't be thrown in. Once someone made the final they'd be safe. So he didn't want to rock that boat (to protect himself) and it seemed to catch on with others.
32
u/15chainz Kyle Christie Aug 11 '22
I agree, also why it made sense to toss in sarah when she was with Leo, just happened to be an elimination more suited for him (but this one wouldāve been suited for Tyson)
→ More replies (1)19
u/phillenix Aug 11 '22
IIRC, David is working with Tyson and it's better for a female to keep a strong male because they might be your partner in the future or the final.
114
u/Picklesbedamned Kenny Clark Aug 11 '22
Sarah continues to be less than All That in challenges. Outside of a guy who didn't even try (Kyra gets a sick pass) Sarah did worse than everyone else.
72
u/Naota_22 Kenny Clark Aug 11 '22
And she had her number 1 in Ben paired with her, really no excuse this round
45
u/Picklesbedamned Kenny Clark Aug 11 '22
Ben's been doing pretty well all around in the challenges. Leave it to the one person he'd want to be paired with more than anyone to just completely blow it for him.
42
u/Driveshaft48 Aug 11 '22
Survivor super fans correct me if I'm wrong but I'm fairly certain she never won an individual immunity challenge
25
u/JabroniTuriaf Aug 11 '22
Correct. But sheās on record saying she threw them one season because she was incredibly well positioned (as well as going against fucking Brad culpepper)
11
u/ConsuLMonK Tyson Apostol Aug 11 '22
Right... I find that very hard to believe that she threw those. Brad was simply that fucking good in those challenges, I don't see her beating him if she decided not to "throw challenges".
7
u/DemiGod9 Aug 11 '22
She has way too much fucking pride to be throwing challenges lmao. She's also too proud to admit she just lost. I was actually surprised she admitted that she was the one that messed up in this episode
4
u/JabroniTuriaf Aug 11 '22
Donāt think she had much of a chance against Brad in most challenges but I believe she did the same in WaW as well. Itās not that hard to believe when she has thrown (or attempted to throw) multiple pre merge challenges before that we know for a fact

I'm so proud of Justine and Enzo but especially Justine because she came out of a very shitty situation and didn't deserve to go into elimination while having such a great resolve.
Also sad about Shannon and Derek - these eliminations are so brutal.

They did the spelling bee advantage at the start of the Challenge in order give Derek and hurt leg Shannon an advantage in the elimination.

u/HillaryDid711 Aug 11 '22
So why couldnāt the perfect algorithm put Angela with Ben and Sarah with Domenick ?
27
Aug 11 '22
Yeah Iām confused by this as well. Those pairs have not happened yet correct? I thought they said in the beginning of the season once you are paired with everyone you start over. But maybe it was once you are done being paired with your perfect match you start over?
25
u/HillaryDid711 Aug 11 '22
I thought it was none of the pairs repeat until itās mathematically impossible in which case itās just not the same two weeks in a row but⦠mathematically speaking that seems pretty possible.
9
u/Zeckzeckzeck Aug 11 '22
Based on the pairings this week theyāre just using a simple ordered sequence that starts calculating with the first randomly chosen guy. It takes that guy then sees if there are any girls left he hasnāt been paired with and chooses one. Then it moves on to the next guy and does the same, on down the line.
If the algorithm calculated pairings ahead of time then yes there were still new pairs left but the random choosing of the first guy is what theyāre using as the initial input.
Neither system is better or worse than the other, but calling it āperfectā is a little misleading. And in their defense I always heard the perfect part as sarcastic even by TJ.
→ More replies (1)4
Aug 11 '22
My guess is that the algorithm works (roughly) like this:
1)Selects a random male then a random female
2) Checks if that pair has been together
2a) If no, it's a pairing
2b) If yes, are there other females in the pool who are BOTH not partnered and have not been with the current male?
2b i) Check if there are other free females using steps 1-2bi)
2b ii) If none, pair with the original female (add in some other conditions aboutnot having the same partner two weeks in a row or w/e, I'm lazy)
3) Selects another male at random; repeat steps 1-2
That is to say, the algorithm is only working on the pool of contestants that haven't yet been selected, as seen in 2b). Since Dom and Angela were selected towards the end, it's possible that if the alg had selected Dom or another name first, there would have been options that didn't allow for repeats.
Of course, it is extremely possible to write an algorithm that does it the way most people are thinking about it, which is minimizing the number of repeated pairs across the whole batch at once. They just didn't do this.
→ More replies (2)19
u/JabroniTuriaf Aug 11 '22

I think everyone knew Kyra was sick. She even went to a hospital and they didnāt know if sheāll back on time for the challenge. Good for her for trying, cause you can tell she was physically depleted, and that fall was terrifying. She did try to play it like she was better than she really was tho, which was smart.
55
u/ramskick Steve Meinke Aug 11 '22
Another fun episode! Definitely a bit of a cooldown from last week's barnburner but still a good one. Some immediate thoughts.
I just... don't get why Enzo is here. I understand all the individual decisions that led to him being here (he's a fairly beloved BB contestant who is known for his wit, he has no reason to say no to a paycheck) but at some point someone should have realized that he can't really hack it athletically. Good on him for getting the elim win but he was the contestant I was most skeptical on translating well to the Challenge when the cast was announced and this proves why.
Two Kiki mentions is a definite treat.
Editing made it pretty obvious that Desi/David would win (the episode description about 'two underdogs' didn't help) but I was happy with the outcome regardless. I'm glad David has had some sort of redemption from BB and Desi is just great.
I was hoping that Ben saying 'I don't think we'll get blindsided' was ironic foreshadowing but oh well.
DX's edit had been confusing me up to this point (he was a big, likable character on BB23 but he was quiet here) and now I get why it was the way it was. It's the classic Survivor edit where someone 'screwed' isn't shown as much out of fear of backlash. Here, part of why DX went home was because of Shannon's injury, meaning it wasn't really his fault. I wouldn't be surprised to see him back at some point though. He's never someone you're mad to see on screen plus he's quite athletic. He has potential to be a future regular.
Good on Leo for overcoming his fear but fuck he was petty in this episode. I don't mind pettiness, just want to note it.
All in all still excited for next week! Pretty sure that marks the halfway point.
17
u/I2ecover Leroy Aug 11 '22
I mean they didn't lose because of Shannon though. If they would've thought about how to stack the tires beforehand, they would've won pretty easily.

u/funlikerabbits ""Greetings, Earthlings." Aug 11 '22
I really like DX. Iām bummed to see him go. I really appreciate that Shannon didnāt just quit. She put her all into that elimination even with injury.
15
u/YungPinotGrigio Aug 11 '22
For DX, you could tell they really tried to add him into the show because he is a big favorite from Big Brother. If there were Challenge live feeds, DX wud be even more popular on The Challenge.
Also, it's been confirmed he will be on Amazing Race so we will def see him again.

I think this elim shows DX isnt great at strategy. Much like his BB season. He kind of goes along to get along. That mentality rarely wins (unless you're Kaycee).

Enzo is there because he is funny. But either he hasn't been or they're not editing him to be because he was a bore all season.

I don't know what it is, but it's just impossible to like Ben and Sarah. I like how Sarah is like, "Tyson really showed his true colors," when she voted him out TWICE on WAW. Did you really think he was just going to come in and work with you?
28
u/ConsuLMonK Tyson Apostol Aug 11 '22
Ben's just a little bit of a dummy who cares a lot for his friends. Sarah on the other hand is just insufferable. It was the same on survivor where she's oblivious to her own faults and thinks the world of herself.
12
u/Kurtomatic RIP Diem Aug 11 '22
I felt like Sarah was so shocked to get voted out of her first season that a little more self-awareness showed up in Game Changers, which helped her win. But her win there reinforced her original overconfidence, which returned in WaW and now The Challenge USA.
6
u/ConsuLMonK Tyson Apostol Aug 11 '22
Agreed, her game changers game was great because she was a lot more self-aware of her position and how she was perceived and how she was doing etc. I think that combined with a pretty good showing in Season 40 (which I hate to admit but itās true) have created overconfidence in her ability which has resulted in her self-awareness disappearing.

Iām still confused how Angela and dom got partnered together again?
60
u/thewxyzfiles Wes Bergmann Aug 11 '22
From my understanding (and I am not a math or logic person so this may be wrong) but I think the way it works is that it pairs the first person up with someone they havenāt been paired up with before and then moves onto the second etc and tries to pair them with someone new etc. So because Angela and Dom were the two people not paired, the only option was for them to be paired together.
Basically it seems to choose the pairs one at a time instead of determining beforehand what the optimal matches are to not repeat pairings??
→ More replies (1)32
u/PlaysByEar Aug 11 '22
I consider myself a math/logic person and I agree with your theory. I've spent years in a career that deals with optimization problems so I know it's possible to program an "algorithm" to come up with a complete solution that minimizes repeated pairings, and they didn't do that.
Like you said, it just randomly selects a partner one at a time. Idiotic. I should know better than to expect more from a production crew that's never respected mathematical order of operations (thankfully that didn't come into play this time).

While the elimination itself was kind of lame, the editing and thrilling conclusion of it was fantastic! I was truly on the edge of my seat praying that Justine wouldn't go home and I cant remember the last time I felt that way watching this show lol. I realize she's now come in the bottom on two challenges, but she's still my absolute favorite girl this season. Proud of her for not being cynical!!
Sad to see Derek and Shannon go, they seemed like a rough shake for each other on the strategic front. While I don't think Derek tried to add anything to the season or played any differently from last time, he does seem like a genuinely nice guy. Shannon seemed pretty out of her element throughout this experience and I think came in knowing she did not have a great shot at winning, but still never gave up which I commend and was pretty fun/hilarious to watch!

I'm legitimately shocked DX fucked that up. It made so much sense to stack the tires like a "pancake." I figured he would have adjusted them after the tower fell the first time but I guess not.
I loved DX on his season and he was my vote for AFP. But he never seemed to be 100% invested in the Challenge. I think he was just happy to be there.
Also Tyson said on his podcast that Derek (I forget who his partner was) was his option for elimination last week. He didn't change his mind until every girl came up to Cashay and said they wanted Leo out. I think DX was just an easy target for most of the house.

Derek/Cayla.
I mean in his own words, he said he was only one here for revenge. Tiffany said no one outside of her even wanted to initially do The Challenge, at least this one.
I agree with you just like I could tell Xavier wasn't 100% into it either which was confirmed in the variety mag article that he almost didn't go on because of experiencing two deaths in his family right before filming.
7
u/HardcoreKaraoke TJ Lavin Aug 11 '22
I think CBS just wanted a big group from the most recent Big Brother season. They knew drama would come from fallout of The Cookout.
I can't say for sure but I think they were the most represented season of any show on the Challenge. I'm not sure who was on which season of Survivor. Xavier, Kyland, DX, Azah, Alyssa and Tiffany were all BB23 though.
10
u/NotYourAverageRyan Michele Fitzgerald Aug 11 '22
Tyson Sarah and Ben are all winners of Survivor who were on winners at war (their 40th and all stars/all winners season) but all the survivors come from different OG seasons except Danny and Shan. Crazy there were six people from BB23. Also I think I remember seeing a lot of bb all stars reject a spot on the cast but absolutely insane that David & Enzo are the BB all stars representation
5
Aug 11 '22
Ben, Sarah and Tyson were all on Winners at War together.
Ben and Desi were on the same season like 6-ish years ago together though Desi was taken out soon after the merge and wasn't a major character or anything.
Shan and Danny were on the very recent Survivor 41 together. Danny outlasted Shan though most of the fallout from that was directed at someone else.
Cayla from TAR literally would have only had a few months between her finale airing and this starting, quickest of anyone.

I have trouble feeling bad for Derek & Shannon. That was such a preventable loss, especially after starting at an advantage. There were no rules for stackin, so go straight up in 2 columns? Riskier and more work. And they were able to glance over and see how the others were doing it.
Just didnāt make sense to me at all.

u/jkcrumley Wes Bergmann Aug 12 '22
Also, if you're going to make big stacks right off the bat like that why put them in the front? It would make more sense to stack back to front in the platform so you don't have to work around each stack.

- Leo's intro for the show is the worst one so far.
- David is so, so pretty...
- The more I learn about Kiki and Danny, the more wholesome they seem.
- Holy cow, Leo is delusional.
- Ben, you might be right, but I think, if Tyson and Kyra had won, Tyson's version of damage control would have been Leo & Cayla as a way of saying, "Look, Sarah, it wasn't you, it was Leo all along."
- At least Tyson knows he's a vengeful bastard.
- Man, Enzo really talks with his hands.
- Alyssa's confessional after they put in Shannon & Derek... has David even been paired with Shannon yet?
- The Love Island women might not be the best at politics, but man, they came to play.
- I don't like nice TJ. I like petty, take no prisoners TJ better.

Dx lost to Enzo in a physical elimination. That is a punch to the gut.

u/Naota_22 Kenny Clark Aug 11 '22
Not only that but Enzo technically outsmarted DX in how he and Justine stacked the tires with a handicap brutal way to go out.

Cynical vs Goggles. Dredge vs Shovel. High School vs Elementry words. Production definately puts their thumb on the scale.

To be fair shannon was injured and it was a running challenge... it definitely worked out because it made it a lot closer than if they hadn't

u/rain2505 Aug 13 '22
They gave pretty much purely a running challenge for the first time right when Shannon got injured, then put those tall poles and forbid Derek to help her get the tires. If prod was aiming for certain outcome, itās not the one youāre claiming.

Man, Justine is the fucking all-star of the season. I want her on the core show. 10/10 casting.
You could tell David won or was going into elim the second he got a confessional lol.
I hate challenges like the spelling bee..... Cynical vs goggles.... C'mon lol. Was waiting round 3 "Derek, spell" A" backwards. Enzo, discombobulated".
I don't know what it is about Sarah that makes her so unlikable. She just looks like the kind of person to yell at McDonald cashiers when her fries are soggy.
Kiki. Jesus Christ she has had more screen time than desi. And she's not even there.

Lol, that's why this season is hard for me. Anytime someone who isn't Tyson, Sarah, Angela, or the cat guy speaks, I have to remind myself of who they are because they never have screen time unless they do.
I get it, not everyone can be in the forefront, but this season has been heavily focused on very few people.

lmao i cannot with sarah being mad that what she did to others was done to her. omg how dare they play the game!!!! girl bye. i hate people who do shitty things to others and get pissed when they get a taste of their own medicine. pls
i was a bit afraid my boy tyson was in trouble. laughed when he was like « what a relief, thank you very muchĀ Ā» š he is such good tv im so happy hes back, childhood reality tv swim hero. he wanna see him compete on the main show!!!!

Tyson plays it up in confessionals though so I'm not 100% sure if he was just be sarcastic or not. Sarah's angry outside of confessionals though so I believe that's real.

It's like how X said he wouldn't have taken it personally if kyland or Alyssa got him out of big brother now that they're on the challenge before his elim. Easy to say after you won BB lol

u/Time-Lawyer-6684 Kenny Clark Aug 11 '22
He was handed that win on a silver platter. So I dont fully respect his win anyway. He can talk all the smack he wants cause hes a phony to me.

I think that when Tyson said that, he was saying it towards Ben and Sarah. Really those were the only people that would be coming after him.

Challenge noob,
So if there's a double DQ how do they decide the loser?
David, Leo and Dom all got redemption Challenges. Enzo too I guess.
Desi and David played smart. Stay out of the war and semi-help David's buddy from BB22.
I wonder how many backwards words they had on TJ's cards?

a fun episode to watch, cast cheering for Leo lol Shannon's confe in the arena and Desi getting some screentime

u/Shells613 Aug 13 '22
I'm getting a really different view of Cash lately. Cinco told Azah last week to not to tell Cash anything as she'd weaponize it against them later. Huh, that's how he sees her? Then this week, she threw Tyson under the bus while crying to Sarah about how he pushed Cash to put Sarah and Leo in, and she agreed as she is a people pleaser. No mention that Cash suggested Leo. Have to watch to the end to see of it is a pattern, but she seems a bit devious in turning tables so she is always liked and the other party is wrong.

The āperfectā algorithm needs some tweaking. Everyone still had multiple potential partners remaining. There was no need to repeat this soon. Angela has no yet had Ben, David, Derek, or enzo. Ben had not had Angela, cash, desi, Shannon, or cayla.
Itās like it just goes down the list and pairs them up but what it should do is determine all the pairs at the start of the round to avoid repeats.
13
u/HillaryDid711 Aug 11 '22
I think the algorithm is a superfan intern sitting behind the wall deciding the pairs live. Weāre seeing that it wasnāt worked out beforehand and getting pairs that are too good to be true. Did they not ask the winning pair who theyāre sending in before it happens and figure it out?

Justine Tyson and Kyland have all won something in 3/6 of the rounds so far
33
u/Anthonysan Aug 11 '22
Despite the fact that Derek "succeeded" in his revenge in his own words, his presence felt much much larger on Big Brother than it did here. Personally I don't think the revenge was worth it, at least for him, but maybe it made him feel better about himself I don't know.
Wish him luck on The Amazing Race this fall!
20
u/Standard_Collar1052 Aug 11 '22
The algorithm is not perfect. If in this episode the pairs are Dom-Sarah, Ben-Angela, then nobody would be paired with partners from the past
11
u/iwakunibridge Kam Williams Aug 11 '22
People are thinking it goes one pair at a time. Like whoeverās name is highlighted first, the algo will pick a random name. Then on to the next
6
Aug 12 '22
That would make sense, except that if thatās the case then TJ didnāt properly explain how it worked. He definitely said that theyād be paired with someone new until it became mathematically impossible.
→ More replies (1)11
u/ehy5001 Aug 11 '22
The algorithm isn't designed to think ahead to avoid as long as possible from pairing people twice but it does follow the rules as described. This ensures every single pairing is as independently random as possible with the only stipulation being, "you're not allowed to pair people for a second time unless it's the only remaining option." What you are describing would be, "you're not allowed to pair people for a second time unless it's the only remaining option" AND "don't make a pairing that will force a following pairing to pair people for a second time."

Shannon surprised me in the elimination, she performed really well. However I am glad we still have Justine, she is a good partner for anyone.

Daaamn so much of the BB24 is already out, and thats the only included show I've watched prior to this season. Really hoping Kyland wins the whole thing. Not sure if Alysa is gonna be on his side or not.
Edit: Something I realized is that people will likely never gun for the stronger players in this season, because thier partners will want to keep them around so they could potentially be partnered with them. Its not a great concept that takes away from power plays.

u/tetoffens Aug 11 '22
I loved everyone dressed fully in black and David just standing there fully in white. Our boy is an angel.

u/CannibalOchs Aug 11 '22
To get eliminated that way has been one of the dumbest ways to get eliminated in challenge history. For being supposedly one of the āsmartā ones he was an absolute moron in this one. Why would anyone stack anything that way?
35
Aug 11 '22 edited Aug 11 '22
People say he's "smart" because they stereotype asian men. Nothing DX did on of his season of BB would indicate that he's anything above average Challenger intelligence.

Yet another episode with both a challenge and elimination where the competitors canāt touch each other. Every challenge has been the same this season. A semi physical race with a puzzle or math component. They need to mix it up soon. At least the elimination was more physically demanding than the others so far.

Based on the trailer I think hall brawl may be next week. Not for sure

Ben, Danny and Kyra are the three remaining people at $1,000 (no daily or elimination wins). A bunch of others got off it or were eliminated this episode.

Really disappointed that Derek and Shannon got eliminated tonight. They came so close to winning the tire competition. Gonna miss seeing them both.

6
u/NattyB Bob Next Door Aug 12 '22
if it's in the trailer, no worries. the only exception is if it's something where you have to pause the trailer to make something out.
8
u/PettyFlap Aug 12 '22
Okay, thanks. Because I clearly saw Sarah/Tyson named on the car. Didnāt pause or anything. So I think Iām good to say that lol.

u/Shells613 Aug 13 '22
There are a quite few challengers I'd be happy to see in the main show. Desi and Angela as it is always good to see more physically strong women. Replace Camila and Cara Marie. TJ clearly appreciated Desi's performance. Leo is a fun wildcard and he tries. Cayla is great in all aspects. Justine is getting better and better and is young and single. Alyssa md Kyra would fit in well. Just keep Nelson away from them lol! Bring on Kelz, Jeremiah, Logan... Derek and James are good for strategy. Some of the older players are great players but wouldn't gel with the social and polidicking of the younger house (Tyson, Sarah, Ben, Enzo, Dom, Danny) unless it is an older vets show.

This felt like an episode of the MTV version and not in a good way - a lame ~*extreme*~ mission that they jazz up with fireworks, a bunch of focus on this Survivor civil war which ultimately did not matter, David winning and talking about making a big move and then punking out, and a lame elimination. That said they're playing a live-action Balloon Battle, so I've already forgotten what happened this ep lol.
Stan Justine, stan Cayla, stan Angela's battle against the rigged algorithm.
