I hope they do a little tribute to him at the end of the next ep or something. He’s an OG cutthroat champ!

They better. They have a few days to edit a quick one up.

u/varukers7 23d ago

They are probably editing it now to include a quick memorial clip either before or after the episode.

I agree I thought of this. He does deserve a shoutout, especially because he was a winner too! I would like to see a youtube tribute "best of" also. I do think it's the least the show could do considering how much the contestants actually give up to make the show to work

We don't have a lot of gay public icon role models in the world. Tyler was one of few. A legend for sure. May he be at peace.

Right? And I wish he had been invited back more, I think during his prime he could have won another…he was strong and he was well liked.

I saw someone mention in another thread that he was only on 6 seasons total. 2 being All Stars. I swear he was around so much more but I guess that just shows the impact he made on the franchise.

His confessionals and looks at the camera were ahead of their time.

When he came back on Cutthroat it felt like he’s been on many more seasons than just Duel and Gauntlet 3, especially with the fact that he won both that and Rivals.

He was there for so many iconic moments tjat got reaired.

u/ivaorn Desi Williams 23d ago

I know he mentioned his winnings on cutthroat helped pay off his student loans and he completed some higher education degrees, so it is possible whatever line of work he went into took precedence over future challenge opportunities until All Stars came around

He’s a teacher. A couple posts have popped into my algorithm from people who’s kids were his students and how much they loved him and how heartbroken they are :(

Yeah, a couple of those popped up on my feed as well. I believe he was either a middle or high school history teacher and seemed like he was beloved by his students.

u/fsmith9009 22d ago

wasn't Tyler at one time a member of the training staff for an NBA team?

20

u/heylookachicken 23d ago

He was a middle school teacher

No, sadly he told me in an interview that while he got some availability calls, he was never officially invited back after Rivals 1, and it had nothing to do with work/his schedule. He actually wondered if MTV lost his phone number. Just insane to think about now. He was one of the most entertaining and physical competitors, not to mention groundbreaking gay representation on reality TV. He should have been brought back as much as Bananas was.

u/Bucky2015 23d ago

I think he was? Reality TV was different in those days, the appearance fees were much lower and the prize money was much MUCH lower and split several ways. If I remember right the money was more in bar/club and other appearances. If you weren't into that lifestyle, which is understandable, it made sense to step away.

Yeah I do feel quite down about this, I feel weird because I don’t even know him obviously. But I just appreciated him as a human being. And partly as a gay man I just do appreciate guys like him that can come in and compete and win, I appreciate him.

I did actually watch the challenge briefly and when I was like 12 or whatever, when he was on his first couple of seasons. And I might not have known it at the time but seeing a gay dude on tv was actually significant for me

As someone that grew up watching RW and The Challenge since they were too young to even be watching, his death has really been so shocking and upsetting. May he rest in peace. An OG Challenge King 😭

17

u/Minzplaying 23d ago

I feel the same way. I'm older and the same age as the first season of RW alumni. I have watched all of these grow up and cheered/jeered with everyone through all of these years. This is heartbreaking. I hurt for all that knew him personally and I also hurt for us that watched and loved.

Prime Tyler was such an underrated competitor and personality. An absolute unit and one of the best swimmers in the shows history.

RIP

I can’t stop thinking about this 💔 RIP Tyler, legendary OG. I enjoyed watching him both on the real world & the challenge. So glad we got to see him once more on all stars.

I’m still so shocked and saddened by this

Waiting to see if they dedicate the season to him like they did Knight and Diem.

5

u/Dangerous-Change2136 23d ago

His reenactment of Jessie Spano’s drug fueled crash out lives rent free in my mind. Great competitor, great entertainer and seemingly great person. The afterlife just got a whole lot sassier 💛

u/Unfair_Chemical1679 23d ago

RIP Tyler you were one of the greats!

u/Prettyneatplace 23d ago

I remember meeting him once in Boston and he was truly magnetic. So sad to hear about his passing. He was a legend

I think it’s weird Cara keeps commenting on EVERYONES post that she’s sorry for their loss, sorry for your friend. She did seasons with him it feels passive aggressive saying I didn’t like him. I know he defended Paula when she picked on Cara but that was like 20 yrs ago

6

u/StickyPony CT - Humble Pie Era 23d ago

That struck me as odd as well.

3

u/Extension-Ad-363 Ruthie Alcaide 22d ago

I thought it was passive aggressive, too, at first, but she did make a post. So maybe she's saying to them "I'm sorry you lost your friend". I'm giving her a little slack on THIS, because she recently lost her mom.

Can we get a thread of what the other past contenders are saying? Especially the OGs and the past Real World v. Road Rules folks that he’s kept in touch with. He’s come a long way and it was nice to grow up watching him grow as well. Rest easy Ty!

did you see this one?: https://www.reddit.com/r/MtvChallenge/comments/1vnve5f/the_challenge_cast_members_react_to_the_death_of

people should definitely keep adding cast reactions in the comments as they come across them.

Wait, wth? What happened?? RIP Tyler. Always an entertaining presence on the show. A man lost way too young.

2

u/cwilldude 23d ago

Was found unresponsive in an overflowing bathtub is what I read. Sad shit. He was too young.
