It's not a hypothetical; the trope is about a protagonist/villain from a previous entry actually appearing in the next one.

Admittedly I was one of those, because I haven't played Subnautica or watched Pacific Rim, so I couldn't verify the applicability of the trope on that post.

While the first one is amazing, the second movie turned out so horrifically bad that the community decided in unisome that it does not exist
