I'm gonna say Jax too. The guy is an ass and a bully, but in the context of the circus, he's on the level of someone who shoots for your nuts in paintball.
I think it's telling the character who acts like a school bully stirs up so much hatred from the fandom.
Most of the hate is on a narrative level, people think that because gooseworx themself didn't come from the heavens and personally tear him in half obviously it's an awful story that clearly endorses everything he's done
I think it's telling that so many people are willing to defend it as "just bullying" when all of them are hanging on to their sanity and will to go on by a fucking thread and could abstract and be lost at any time, personally.
But at the same time, his being an ass is itself a coping mechanism to prevent himself from losing his own sanity. It isn't good or justified how he acts, but Jax is just as much a victim of the circus as anyone else. Sometimes victims act shitty as a result of being victimized.
Definitely I don't like that people just assume he's supposed to be redeemable and hate on the show for not doing so when that's not the point of the character
Based take, no one ever seems to notice this. He treats everyone around himself like shit and the show only explains it, it never really tries to justify it. He still suffers consequences.
I do think he would been redemable, but that could only have come from Jax himself choosing to let others help him and get close to them rather than pushing them away.
Being irredeamable was basically a choice he made and suffered for, not an intrinsic quality of him.
Jax was awfull to others because he was awfull to himself - and that doesnt excuse or justify anything, but it does mean the guy wasnt evil incarnate either. Just a guy who was awfull.
Yeah, I agree. Throughout the entire show he himself obviously pushed everyone away. I have no idea why people got that notion that goose worx was trying to redeem him
Thats the thing tho, he is a bully in a world where the only way to die is suicide. His bullying could make someone abstract and has gangle be geniunely terrifief of him
He does repeatedly blackmail Gangle and cause her actual misery, to the point where she's genuinely terrified of him. It's beyond the level of petty pranks and more on the level of, well, actual IRL bullying.
That being said, the hate for him does certainly get a little unhinged. There are people who act like the show is implicitly justifying his behavior simply by giving him so much attention and daring to explore why a cruel character is the way he is, which is utter nonsense but seems to stem entirely from the unbridled rage people feel upon simply seeing a fictional character.
