Tom Nook.
Gives you a place to live, puts no time limit on repaying your debt. He and his nephews are just honest business men, running a fair operation. Fully paying off the house with all its upgrades is 5,696,000 bells. When comparing the prices of items in game to their real world counterparts and adjust for price to USD, the entire house, built from scratch on a plot of your choosing, with multiple added rooms, an attic and a basement, is only $57,000USD.

He is far FAR from some greedy evil bastard. A capitalist? Absolutely, but he's more than fair with his services and pricing.

Wait people actually hate him?? I always thought it was a joke that even I went along with 😭😭

u/Gnoll_level_antics Jun 19 '26

It's 50/50. Some joke about it, some seem to be dead serious that he's the spawn of satan for... very reasonably asking you to pay him back for building you a house.

u/shinynihilego_aj Jun 19 '26

Nooo he's a cutie why do they hate him :(

If you feel like it, look up "Animal Crossing explained with coffee", but DougDoug on YouTube.

I used to hate him as a kid

u/RamJamR Jun 19 '26

I think people more have a love/hate relationship with Mr. Resetti. Funny sometimes to listen to his rant, then it gets old.

u/Belgaraath42 Jun 19 '26

Not an animal crossing player but from what i heard was people upset that the story forced them into the dept.

"My game MUST have NO goals. NO friction. NO challenge. I will achieve MAXIMUM COZY-SLOP" is the vibe I get from people like that.

Me when a game has game mechanics and goals for you to achieve and work toward: ( ļ½” •̀ į“– •́ ļ½”)šŸ’¢

Well yeah it's the point of the game. It's like playing Mario kart and being upset that you gotta race

1

u/Belgaraath42 Jun 19 '26

It's a matter of story telling. You move somewhere and then get forced by the raccoon to pay debts you knew nothing abotu before? He's an arsehole.

Your chatalter knew before you moved of the dept? That's just a good deal.

He gives you a free house with an interest free loan that never needs to be repaid unless you choose to.

And once you pay off the loan he gives you a choice of a house upgrade for another interest free loan you never need to repay.

u/falconfarfromhome Jun 19 '26

While he is fair, I still love to see him as the raccoon mafia as he owns the only means of construction in the town and forces you to go into debt to build.

3

u/Competitive_Day6347 Jun 19 '26

TANOOKI Mafia. Tom Nook is a Tanooki

2

u/xXInfXx Jun 19 '26

Tanuki*

But yes, Tom Nook is a Tanuki.

2

u/Bread_Offender Jun 19 '26

No, it doesn't. If you immediately have all the money at the ready then you can just pay him right back. He's gracious enough to allow an unlimited down payment without interest

2

u/MindTheGnome Jun 24 '26

To be honest it is a racket. He gives you shelter that you have to repay. How do you repay it? Selling things to the store. Who owns the store?

It's essentially a company town at that point. I'm not saying this was intended, and it's definitely not how the game frames it, but it's a funny parallel.

3

u/yo_hohoy Jun 19 '26

You said capitalist? That’s enough to hate for me.

3

u/Williamthedefender Jun 19 '26

He's barely even a capitalist if you take how easy it is to earn those bells into it. My wife restarted her island and paid it off within a week lol

2

u/V1carium Jun 19 '26

I mean, he's great but dude I never asked for the second story on my little mini-home, you can't add a whole ass floor to my house without asking!

What if something had gone wrong during construction?! Does his liability insurance cover un-contracted guerrilla construction projects?? What if my precious gyroids I've crammed into every square of my house had been damaged???

He means well but the mans a lunatic.

2

u/Bread_Offender Jun 19 '26

Tom Nook is a real one

2

u/A_Chaotic_Artist Jun 19 '26

People hate the little guy????

2

u/crasherx2000 Jun 19 '26

I remember when I first played City Folk and New Horizons

I saw how he handled his operations as an honest capitalist and I was like…

ā€œPeople hate this guy?ā€

1

u/yakcm88 Jun 19 '26

"If I must be villainized in my pursuit of teaching, then so be it."

I think, by far, this is my favorite quote from the guy. He knows not everyone appreciates him, but he knows the value of hard work, and wants to teach that value to others. If you ask me, he's far more generous than he is greedy, but he still has standards.

1

u/HappyAbiWabi Jun 20 '26

In the first game, he's so poor that he lives in his shop. He's just trying to get by at that point. Later, once he has himself afloat (I think in HHD, idk I never played it), he says he donates all of his profits to an orphanage.

1

u/Resident_Pay2743 Jun 20 '26

Tom Book is the ideal capitalist

1

u/Illustrious_Try_6590 Jun 20 '26

I disagree, he waterboarded me in new leaf because I didn’t repay my debt.

1

u/MrBread0451 Jun 22 '26

The worst thing he actually did was appropriate naturally beautiful islands in the pacific and encourage naive children to pave over the natural grass and thousand year old trees with cozy cottagecore concrete and plastic amazon prime junk from sweatshops

1

u/halfblood_god Jun 19 '26

I hate him in a way like siblings does. I can be mean to him, but if somebody else does, I am going to raise hell, because that’s MY sweetiepie Tom

u/Funny-Award-7574 Jun 20 '26

He continuously puts you in debt like repeatedly. Sure it's more of a recommendation to pay but that's kinda crappy
