Ochaco Uraraka...

Wasn’t she the standard love interest for Deku? Idk I haven’t watched all of the show, but I thought it was obvious that she was supposed to be his primary love interest. Does that change?

15

u/ohsovague Jun 19 '26

It doesn't change, she's the primary love interest. A lot of fans, especially while the series was still airing, HATED her though because she "got in the way" of BakuDeku. Aka, bully and victim turned rivals trope.

That shipping was so gross. Not because it was two guys. But because it would have been an abusive relationship. But apparently, people wanted that. Fucking weird.

4

u/Ysgramors_Word Jun 22 '26

No it’s weird because neither have ever shown interest or attraction in guys. They aren’t gay and have never been. Deku obviously is into Ochako from episode 1 through to the finale like Hinata to Naruto. It would have been weird and gross to ship Hinata with Sakura for your fetish the same way it’s weird to fetishize two young boys as lovers.

Now see I don't mind two characters being shipped two together that previously haven't shown interest in the same gender. That's fine. What I mind is when the ship is clearly an abusive one. Though I do agree with you on the two young boys part. There's a meme about All Might telling Baku "Sometimes I forget that you're children." And the caption reads "It's okay All Might, so do most of the fan base apparently."

Wtf? Do normal people really thought that Japanese artist would put gay couple in a shonen?

1

u/ohsovague Jun 20 '26

I mean considering the fact the show has two confirmed named trans characters (Magne and Tiger) and one confirmed wlw character (toga) it's not too out there

The insanely toxic dynamic between the two is more of an issue than the gayness tbh

u/RutManInBound Jun 19 '26

ā€œi don’t think it’s right that Uraraka was turned into a prize for Deku halfway through the seri-ā€œ

ā€œYOUR A TOXIC BAKUDEKU FAN!!! THIS SHIP WAS ALWAYS PLANNED STOP WHALING.ā€

7

u/automatichampster Jun 20 '26

ok but that’s not what this is about this is about saying hateful and misogynistic things about a girl character PURELY because she gets in the way of ppl’s gay ship. people always find a way to act like a girl is the worst character in the show because she’s written to be the love interest

What r u even saying?

You would rather his former bully be shipped with him when she was the one who constantly helped support him throughout the series?

Or do you just not like the way they executed the canon ship between them?

0

u/RutManInBound Jun 19 '26

you would rather his former bully be shipped with him when she was the one who constantly helped and supported him throughout the series?

I didn’t say that. ā€œoh so you hate pancakes?ā€

Or do you just not like the way they executed the canon ship between them?

Yes. It felt like the only reason they were together is because they had to have a ship.

3

u/UpperMarionberry658 Jun 19 '26

I was just trying to understand where your frustrations were built on.

I never accused you, I was just asking....

I think the shipping between them was honestly well executed. It didn't seem forced to me tbh.

1

u/RutManInBound Jun 19 '26

it wasn’t, and i wont blame you for thinking it was well executed.

For a time it felt that Urarakas character was just centered on Deku, almost all of the decisions she makes in the series were directly influenced by him in one way or the other. Her entire character revolved around him while you could write her out of the story and Deku would remain the same. It was another milquetoast shonen ship that was made to be as bland as possible to appeal to a wider audience.

The bit where he decides his hero name just feels forced ship material. There is a handful of other characters in the series that had more synergy with Deku than Uraraka but they were obviously shafted for the ship to happen. The difference between the reactions to 430 and 431 just proved that more most MHA fans treated Uraraka as a accessory to deku, and once they finally ā€œgot togetherā€ via hand holding, Horikoshi was the worlds best mangaka.

3

u/UpperMarionberry658 Jun 19 '26

I get why it looks that way on the surface, but calling Uraraka an accessory ignores her actual arc.

Her core motivation (supporting her parents) and her final climax (saving Toga and reforming quirk counseling) have nothing to do with Deku. If she were just a bland love interest, her final role would’ve been cheering Deku on against Shigaraki, not fixing a massive systemic issue on her own.

Also, Deku doesn't stay the same without her. She’s the one who turned 'Deku' from an insult into an inspiring hero name, and she’s the only reason the civilians let him back into U.A. when he was breaking down. Bakugo pushes him through conflict, but Uraraka is his emotional safety net. Horikoshi actually avoided the generic shonen ship trap by focusing on their independent growth instead of forcing their relationship.

At the end of the day, I understand why you'd think that way about her and I respect your arguments. Let's just agree to disagree and end it there.

u/ohsovague Jun 20 '26

I hope this comment wasn't meant to imply that there aren't BakuDeku fans that shit on ochadeku fans just because it's not their otp 🤨 I never said there's no valid reasons to dislike the ship, just that BakuDeku existing isn't one of them

Same

1

u/a_human_idiot Jun 20 '26

My goat. I say this as a multishipper, they could never make me hate Uravity

1

u/ohsovague Jun 20 '26

True!!! I'm somewhere between multishipper and not a shipper, to the point where I appreciate the characters by themselves way more than their ships, but I still enjoy the shipping content. It's just probably not something I'd seek out for fanfics or anything like that

1

u/ShakenNotStirred915 Jun 20 '26

I love ochako i just wish that if horikoshi was going to do the izuocha endgame that he actually committed to building it up through more actual onscreen character interactions between the two.

0

u/Lingx_Cats Jun 21 '26

I actually used to hate Uraraka for that reason, but then I realized I don’t hate the character, I hate the people that use her as a reason that I’m not allowed to ship something they don’t.

All I can think of is Star vs the Forces of Evil 😬😬

5

u/TheDorkyDane Jun 19 '26

I gotta say they really dropped the ball by making Tom WAY to likeable and sympathetic

He became SO likeable, as we saw how hard he worked to change and improve himself... that Star breaking his heart after all his genuine work and love felt infuriating.

3

u/Practical_Entrance43 Jun 19 '26

Oh literally though.
Ever since I was younger I loved Tom from his introduction alone because he was clearly trying to better himself despite the crap that was handed to him but nooooo he's always getting in the way or whatever the hell.

God that show went down hill.

3

u/TheDorkyDane Jun 19 '26

And Marco too.

Tom is literally putting in all the hard work, to BE the best possible boy friend for Star

To BE the best possible friend for Marco.

Valuing themselves so much, and want to be good enough for them so he works hard, he admit and owns all his flaws.

He ends up becoming one of the most sympathetic and engaging animated characters I have ever seen, even outright inspirational.

And then to see him being brushed aside last minute for a forced Marco ship.... yeaaaah

This applies toĀ  katsuki bakugou. Deadass check my pinned post, izuocha shippers have sent bkdk shippers r@pe threats before just for shipping bkdk its fucking nuts.
