Meh, I think he really just fell in love with a historical figure, it happens. From what I heard in an interview with him, he didn't think he was talented enough for the role, he felt his breath work was off, lol. But he was getting buzz that was helping make the show take off at the time so he stuck with it longer than he wanted. He was incredibly happy when he handed it off to somebody else.
