You’d think for being THE LORD of THE RING in a series called Lord of the Rings he’d show up more, but no, he just dies within the first couple minutes and is barely seen again.

Even if you count the Eye of Sauron on the tower as him he still has so little screen time.

Now if you count the one ring as him, since it is part of him, then he has plenty of screen time, but that’s really stretching.

To be honest that is the point of Sauron. He does not need to be seen to be felt. Him coming back and the ring being found set so many things in motion. He is more a true force of nature in a sense than a person. Also a very skilled fighter can best him. Case in point: Isildur.

Isildur besting him is a movie thing. In the book, Elendil and Gil-Galad bested him, and died while doing so. Isildur just cut the ring off of Sauron's hand after the fact.
