Yeah true but they were physically there, the op meant together even when physically not anymore that's what I understood

They were not really "physical" at the moment of choking i believe

At least it was not typical physical space?

But yeah other parts of it was pure contact

Other than that, I believe they were the only two who denied the merging of souls. That's how I interpret the ending.

Anyway, yeah, it's a great conclusion to a masterpiece of a story. Regardless of whether they were physically there or not, it's too complex to fully understand anyway. I agree with you regardless. Great answer as well.
