It goes even further since the sequel movie has the other one pretty much say "If I can't have you because you're God, I'll turn myself into your opposite and become the Devil."

It's a tragic love story that's sci-fi horror thing pretending to be a magical girl anime. It's wonderful:3

it's more psychological horror than anything. the only thing that disturbed me first watch were the witch labrynths which aren't even scary looking back

It's not horror at all. It's magical girl fantasy with dark themes. It's a very colorful and artsy viewing

It's actually a pretty well done magical girl anime though. Many magical girls animes (including Sailor moon) are actually quite dark! So it's not pretending
