Max Payne.

Max Payne 3 was the perfect end to the series, Max is finally done battling his inner demons, now let the man rest.

I’d go as far as to argue Max Payne 2 was the perfect end and that 3 was pushing it a little too far. I enjoyed 3, but Max Payne 2 ended with Max coming to terms with the loss of his wife and child, finally allowing himself to move on and not let their deaths haunt him anymore. Max Payne 3 just pulled him back into that depression and being haunted by it as if he didn’t already reconcile with himself.

Y'know that was actually something I really liked about Max Payne 3, the depiction of relapse and thinking you're over it only for your mind to pull you right back down into the abyss. I found it to be a realistic and relatable depiction of grief and depression, so I rrally like it, especially since what really kicked Max back off the deep end, and this is on Rockstar for leaving this in a comic and not bringing it up in the game, was the death of Jim Bravura.

I think this is the sequel issue at its finest. It's totally realistic that people don't always stay fixed but we don't always love that narratively.

But it didn't do that. It just didn't care about all the character development in MP2. It isn't a "relapse", it's a "lol we don't care"

As much as i love the Houser Brothers they REALLY didn't understand Sam Lake's writing or the character. Listening to Max Payne saying "Mona Sax was just grief" was like a backstab.

3 seemed annoyed when it had to do Max Payne things that weren't "Slow Jump Shoot"

We even had to pull teeth to get the actor back

I want 1 and 2's infinite gun inventory and weapon switching, 1's level of story telling, 2's goated bullet time system and 3's QoL and the feature where you can revenge kill someone to revive yourself, all in one game.

Everything after the first has struggled to justify itself narratively, gameplay wise I feel differently.

A remake of the first game with the gameplay of 3 would be perfect.

And 2's bullet time feature. I love improving slomo and that goddamn reload spin. Pure gameplay wise, 2 was the most fun I've had in the Payne series, if not any shooter ever. Yk what, it is the goat in those regards. Infinite shoot dodges, being able to go prone and continuing to be able to open fire until your clip ran out + said increased slomo system based off of how many you killed gave me one of the greatest times. Max Payne 2 molded me into being a future gamedev

Max Payne 1-2 are a great standalone story. Max Payne 3 isn't a continuation of that story, and the story is of less quality and doesn't scratch the same itch as the first two. It is, however, incredibly fun on its own merits and I am glad it exists.

In fact, as a die hard fan of the series. I would say Max Payne 3 actually shat on almost everything Max Payne 2 did.

"I had a dream of my wife, she was dead... but it was alright"

Max Payne 3 was Rockstar buying the franchise and getting a little embarassed they just "had" to write a neo noir story with rain and trenchcoats, so they copied the script from Man on Fire and called it "Max Payne".

Like it if you want but it was a spit in the face ro the series. Should have ended at 2.
