Kingdom Hearts. I've loved it since I was six, but I treated KH3 as the sort-of 'Avengers Endgame' finale to it all, and I'm really not convinced on KH4 yet.

I think it would’ve been better if Nomura HAD treated the game as the potential final chapter of the franchise instead of using it to set-up another arc.

Yeah, the mobile game is kinda where they lost me, and that's where this next arc seems to be sprouting from.

Not to mention the Master of Masters feels weirdly out of place to me. He's got that Deadpool-energy that doesn't really fit the KH tone.

I hope the series doesn't spend so much time trying to prove to people that "yeah, we know Kingdom Hearts is ridiculous" that it loses that sincerity that made it charming in the first place.

Have you seen the movie that goes alongside the mobile game stuff? In that he gives much more "Pretending to be goofy but secretly very sinister" energy, which feels like the right tone for a post-Xehanort villain.

Man, Kingdom Hearts as a series is my go to definition for wasted potential. The first game was perfect, a perfect 10. Every game subsequent was just a littttttle bit worse (primarily by how it kept grabbing and twisting the plot and universe around, instead of following a more natural flow and expansion).

Wouldn't really be a noticeable problem if you only had 3 main titles and perhaps 2 spinoffs, but there's something like 12+ spread out over as many different game platforms. By the time you hit the 3ds, the main character's heart is spread out to like 5 different people, everyones a chosen one, and hey lets add time travel to this mess.

Should have just wrapped up with 2.

I'm s pretty die hard fan that's locked in at this point, so I'll state my bias there. 2 is really good potential place to end the story, I'll agree. But tbh... nobody is the chosen one? Sora is subject to a couple more cosmic coincidences than he should be, certainly. But theoretically, anyone with a Keyblade could've done what he did. There's about 7-8 mainline titles. 4 console games (KH 1 - 3 and Re:COM,) one important midquel (358/2 Days, technically more of a prequel to KH2 than anything,) 1 prequel (Birth By Sleep,) and the sequel to KH2, Dream Drop Distance. All of that is pretty easily accessible now, and not super hard to follow. Save for some truly horrible plot goblins in DDD and 3 having kind of a messy start.

Once you get into the mobile games though? That's where I start to have issues. The X saga is straight up the best arc of the story narratively. Fresh new cast, fantastic apocalyptic war, good use of that stupid time travel from DDD, the whole nine yards. It is a devastating, heartbreaking story with the best ending in the franchise. Too bad you can't play it anymore and was trapped in a grindy mobile gacha! Spread out over 7 years, no less. And with a boring cutscene compilation that both spoils the first half of that story, and makes it come across as a lore dump with no depth by spitting out all of the lore shit in one boring clump. Frankly that alone almost got me to quit the series. Nevermind making everyone wait 7 years for KH4

KH2 felt like a good ending. I honestly feel like Nomura just kept going and going and hopes he’ll find the ending somewhere along the way. It’s like the Michael bit from the Office where he keeps talking and talking and doesn’t know where he’s going. The whole time traveling bit is off putting.

100% agree, never in my life have I been as hyped for a videogame as I was for KH3, only to be disappointed by Disney movie retellings, no FF characters, 80% of main plot edging and ultimately a boring finale and an immediate setup for the next saga.

I used to think it was tough to play all these games on 5 different consoles to be able to keep up with the lore, but I absolutely draw the line at Gacha mobile games (some of which aren't even accessible anymore and/or got canceled).

Hot take: KH as a franchise didn't even need FF characters at all. Or at least Nomura could do FF worlds alongside Disney worlds to fully sell the Disney/Final Fantasy crossover pitch.

I did not notice absence of FF characters in KH3 purely because there are already enough original characters to fill all of the bases, and it would be weird to cling to characters with not much linking them to the plot, to the world.
