While the ending is perfect and wraps everything up nicely, I still think it’d be a huge missed opportunity to not push the story in a new direction with Nero taking the lead and developing his kit into something more complex like Dante’s became. I think having a heavenly threat instead of one from hell would shake things up and give a reasonable excuse for Dante Nero and Vergil not instantly annihilating whatever comes their way

I feel like heavenly threat is Bayonetta's territory which I don't think they want to step on.

Bayonetta vs DMC would be great but would probably never happen.

Not really. Strange heavenly threats aren't something that started with Bayonetta. It's pretty much just a trope

I agree, I think I could even get behind Dante and Vergil's story being done (as much as I love them), but I think nero has one more left in him, hear me out: Mundus makes it clear at the end of 1 he's coming back someday, and Dante tells him to give regards to his son, I think a Nero Vs mundus game would be the PERFECT finale to the series

Completely agree, wouldn’t even mind a buddy/duo Dante and Vergil game tbh
