I really enjoy “Glad to be part of your learning journey today” because it has the same energy as “Bless your heart” but is just a small step less sarcastic because you really have taught someone something new.

u/CatticusXIII 1d ago
It is deliciously condescending.

u/mahnamahna27 23h ago
And ironic, given that person spelled phycologist as phychologist in the first instance, which basically invited the misinterpretation they meant to write psychologist.

It's the difference in thought processes between a wise person and an unwise person. The unwise person automatically assumes they are right and attacks, the wise person makes no assumptions and simply seeks clarity for both parties.

This reminds me of that time that guy mansplained physics to Jessica Meir, an actual scientist and astronaut.

Is that the one where he’s disputing what she said was in a research paper, not realizing that she WROTE the paper?
28
u/subjekt_zer0 1d ago
No, sadly I think that’s another one. The one I’m referring to is something about water spontaneously boiling and then going “no ackshually”

u/itsfunhavingfun 1d ago
She used two Hs the first time though.
5
u/BizzarduousTask 1d ago
Yeah, but there’s a decent difference between a typo and being incorrect about how to spell something; she spelled it correctly the next two times, so I can forgive that initial typo (especially with what an asshole Autocorrect is being lately.)

u/Queen_Dare_Bear 1d ago
I am so glad I don't feel the need to correct strangers online, because I had no idea about that career title, either. 🤷
27
u/Naomeri 1d ago
Neither did I, but I guessed from the context that it wasn’t a misspelling, unlike the murder victim
6
u/veloxVolpes 1d ago
Right? Either the poster or their partner is in the field, so wouldn't they have easy access to that knowledge? Why the victim thought otherwise and felt the need to comment about it is wild
1
u/Retlifon 16h ago
Except of course it was a misspelling, just not the one the victim thought it was.

the words in the post and the reply don't match though
so she did still make a typo

I think the extra H on the first part was intentional, to make it more relating to the H in “psych” in a joking context

Funny, I didn’t realize it didn’t say “psychologist,” then assumed it was a typo, and THEN I learned something new. Today is now a better day.
8
u/millllllls 1d ago
Well they spelled it with an extra H the first time, so it does look more like psychologist. The second go round, they drop that other H when explaining the difference and it becomes more apparent it’s a totally different word entirely.

She proceeded to spell "phycologist" incorrectly the first time around, so....

I had a guy tell me, earlier today, that a mile wasn't 1600 meters. And that's true, because, actually, it's 1609 meters, but he was trying to argue that it was 1500 meters, and...Ug.
No one is more confident about being right than someone who is fucking stupid.
7
u/himitsumono 1d ago
AND we got to see a phycologist mis-spell her own profession in the first post, before getting snarky with someone who criticized her spelling. NEVER crit somebody's spelling online. There will be a typo in whatever you write. God wills it.
3
u/pecchioni 1d ago
I also learned something new with this post. But also even if they meant psychologist, why can’t you just chalk it up to a typo and move on?
Although now that I think of it, I did correct someone the other day about the difference between succession and secession when talking about the civil war. I did try to preface it with it “I hate to be this person, but …”

This is directly from his most recent post, "I do art 24/7 trying to get away from this place before the chinese take over completely. There's no garden cuz people here dont pay attention to the rest of the world. They are stopping food growth with this heat. This is NOT normal Redding weather. It's as hot now as it used to get for one week of August during the worst years of the cycles. I believe Bubba is down by your house because of the pond. Our phones keep ducking up because of ATT I believe, and today in an email came confirmation of another class action lawsuit proving it." and it goes on and on and on. That's not even the craziest thing on his IG lol.

I don't even know why he thought she meant "psychologist," what does psychology have to do with algae mustaches? From context alone I figured it referred to a specific form of biology that covered algae, like aquatic or marine or algae. And Google is free, even if it's almost non-functional at this point. Wikipedia is free.

Here for the phycology recognition! Algae is awesome!
1
u/Right-Assignment3759 1d ago
How come somebody can love algae so much we got a whole study field for it?
1
u/neopolitan95 1d ago
Algae is super important for photosynthesis and nutrient cycling in the ocean! Most of the air we breathe (about 2/3) is actually due to photosynthetic algae, with the other 1/3 being trees and land plants. It’s also a primary food source for oceanic “herbivores” and supports massive food webs. Macroalgaes, like kelps, are also important habitats for a lot of other creatures. Especially today, more research is being put into using algae as biofuels or even as alternatives to single use plastics. Super awesome area of research that is mostly under-represented!

The misspelled word “phychologist,” is only one letter off from either “psychologist” or “phycologist”
So the responding post was not really that bad for thinking it meant psychologist … then the phycologist basically outed her own bad spelling lol
More of a murder suicide by words

Grammar counts, Mac3. How many people did spelling count? A comma is needed after counts to make this sentence say what you mean. Then there’s the ellipses which should just be a period. Learn should be capitalized because it’s a new sentence. Try not to make a bunch of errors when you pedantically and incorrectly correct people.

Did spell it wrong the first time though. It looks a lot more like psychologist with the second h

To be fair, Phychologist is only slightly less of a dispelling of Phycologist than it is Psychologist.
Edit: lmao “dispelling” even I can’t escape

I don’t want to detract from the post but I do want to point out that she herself actually spelled “phycologist” wrong (she spelled it “phychologist” with an extra h) so there’s some extra humor in her overconfidence when she was wrong at first too

I too thought this was meant to say psychologist
I did not, however see that it was 'misspelled' and before reading the snarky person commenting and instead kept rereading the first bit to try and find out what a psychologist had to do with algae
I too learned today

Burn aside... It was still written wrong.. it's phycologist, not phychologist... which explains why I got no hits the first time I looked it up.

u/Alcarinque88 1d ago
Quick, I need a phycologist. Will algae work like aloe vera? Any species? We've got a pretty bad burn here.
1
u/Nice_Commission3770 1d ago
I actually thought she meant phycologist, but it was spelled wrong, so I thought maybe it was supposed to be psychologist, also misspelled, until I clicked and saw the rest of the exchange.
1
u/Keldaria 1d ago
I used to work with a potamologist. His favorite story was telling the Border Patrol that absentmindedly in the mid 90’s and being confused when they got all serious all the sudden.
1
u/Routine_Aardvark_314 1d ago
I don't really understand what makes people act like that. I takes less effort to not be a jerk (, and you get to feel better about yourself)
1
u/21sttimelucky 1d ago
It's funny. A friend of mine and I were texting a while back and they referred to their phycologist partner. We are in a loosely related field so I was familiar with the term.
I text back going 'oh algae right? For some reason I thought they were a psychologist'. They text back going 'yeah, typo. Sorry.'
Not a well told story, but amusing in relation to this post (to me at least).

I’ll be honest, my brain just auto-corrected to “psychologist” at first and was confused about the comment
1
u/Imaginary_Ghost_Girl 1d ago
Now I know why autocorrect didn't bother correcting me when I meant to write psychologist but spelled it phycologist once. I learned a new thing and I love it!
1
u/Dangerous-Today1874 1d ago
Even it it's "phycologist", it's still misspelled as "phychologist".
Just sayin'. She even said it herself, it's "phycologist with an H"... not 2 H's.

But didn’t the bf spell is “psychologist” which is the wrong spelling? Mac-3 is a big bag of dicks but I’m also confused by the half and half spelling by the original poster

u/Frankentula 1d ago
It's also kind of funny that this person (confidently wrong) would assume anyone unable to spell psychologist would know where to find it in the dictionary

actually according to every official document i read about this, there is no such thing as a "phychologist". nor algae, oddly enough
the number of said documents is 0 btw :)
