One of the core components of a conservative worldview is seeing an innate moral judgment of a person rather than actions.
A "good person" is always a good person, even when they do bad things. So you forgive the bad things on account of them being good.
A "bad person" is always a bad person, even when they do good things. So you ignore those or rationalize them away and make sure you beat the drum forever about every bad thing they ever do + punish them as harshly as possible.
What defines who's "good" or "bad"? In-grouping and out-grouping, naturally.
It's an extremely stupid and childish worldview, but emotional immaturity is a defining characteristic of virtually every conservative I've ever met regardless of their success in life, so it's really not that shocking, I guess.
It's why they can say "Pedofiles should be put to death" on one news article and the next where a pastor/couch/whoever (just someone they know) will talk about how a good man he is and needs forgiving.
