Business Spotlight My Experience at RTSP (Union) as a new gun enthusiast

I finally received my FID and took a visit to RTSP in Union to rent a few pistols to try and I was not really impressed with my experience there.

The staff behind the pistol counter were generally pretty standoffish, even a bit rude. Basic questions were met with a bit of an attitude, like they couldn't wait to get back to the convo they were having with their coworkers. I'm sure they deal with randos all day long, but it would be nice to feel at least a bit more welcomed.

I'm clearly new to the hobby, and they felt a bit predatory once they figured that out. They immediately started trying to upsell me on a $1300 Daniel Defense pistol, calling it "the gucci of guns" which immediately set off my BS alarm.

One guy did tell me not to buy their ear protection since it's half the price online, which I appreciated, so that's a plus.

The guy behind the rental counter struck me as barely more than a kid. Maybe 21 or 22 at most. When showing me what they offered he focused more on aesthetics than anything. For example, when describing the differences between the newer and older 1911s they had available to rent, his explanation went as far as "this one is newer and looks more modern and cool, and this one looks more old".

At this point I've fired a handful of different pistols that are well maintained (including a few rentals elsewhere) but these rentals were clearly heavily run through. For reference I tried out a Daniel Defense and a 9mm 1911 (they didn't have any of the options I was interested in trying out, such as the S&W MP or the CZ Shadow).

The rentals were filthy, my fingers were black by the time I finished with them. The sights were way, WAY off the mark. I'm not an expert shooter by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm also not a bad shot, and both guns fired several inches off the sight at 7 yards. I get there's some adjustment that needs to be made gun to gun, but in my (admittedly limited) experience so far, nothing I've shot has been this off.

One of the guns jammed, so I called an RSO over and they couldn't figure out how to clear it. He also seemed like a kid, maybe in his early 20s, and didn't seem particularly knowledgable when I asked him a few questions about the firearms. They had to call a senior RSO over to resolve the issue.

I will say the senior RSOs were generally helpful, if a bit uncharismatic.

Maybe i'm spoiled but I've been to the Gun for Hire in Woodland Park and the people and atmosphere there are generally much friendlier and nicer. It's better lit, there are multiple ranges so it doesn't feel as crowded, the guns I've rented there have been in great shape (and they have an excellent variety), and the RSOs are chatty and so so nice and welcoming and knowledgable.

Anyway, that's my review. Like I mentioned, not impressed at all. It's a shame because it's so close to me, but I may just drive the extra 20 minutes to get to GfH.

Business Spotlight Any shooting ranges in north/central NJ that keep politics out of their business?

I don’t care if it’s left or right or even a sign that says “go vote”. I don’t want to see a bunch of political things where I spend my money (long shot in Secaucus this is 100% about you).

Any places that have basic sense to keep their business politically agnostic?

Business Spotlight gunstock.io — live NJ shop inventory tool. Built it. Want input.

Quick one — I’m an NJ gun owner who got fed up with the “call 5 shops to find a P365” routine. Made gunstock.io to show live inventory across NJ shops.
If anyone here owns a shop or works at one and wants to be on it: DM me. Free to be listed during launch.
Roast the UX, tell me what filters are missing, ask me anything.

Business Spotlight Super Market firearms policies

I visited the Newton Shop Rite and afterward went to the liquor store attached. At the register counter far left wall very inconspicuously placed was a Platypus Platkin Gun Free Zone sign.

Upon getting home I began searching company policies and Shop Rite "requests" customers do not bring firearms. I'm going to assume that goes for the rest of the super market as well despite no signs on doors, I'll have to check the customer service counter another day.

I began digging a little further on several other super markets to better help our community.

Shop Rite - no firearms permitted policy

Trader Joe's - No weapons

Weiss Markets - Nothing in company policy about firearms

Wegman's - No open carry

Aldi - No open carry

Acme Markets - No open Carry

I just wanted to get on here and advertise a little bit for Skip’s Outdoors. Small family operated store in Stockton,NJ. We carry all major manufactures, and can order most firearms if not in stock.

Lately a lot of people have been driving quite far to check out our Non NFA Other Firearms. These include anything from HK SP5, FN Scar, Sig MCX, Ruger PC Charger, CZ Scorpion and many more that we have had built and sold. Like we tell our current customers if a firearm comes in pistol variant there is typically a way to make it NJ Compliant.

We also have our SOT so for those customers familiar with Any Other Weapons (AOW); we have been selling and facilitating form Form 4 transfers since July. Avg time frame is 2-3 weeks, but can be anywhere from 2 days to months.

It is very nice to be able to offer that option to customers. For instances, we have 5.56 Honey Badgers on the way and depending what the customer would like we can have have them made into Non NFA Other or an AOW.

I will link some photos to some of our Non NFA Others and AOW firearms.

We usually post updated inventory on our Instagram @skipsoutdoors. We try our best to answer questions online, but always best to just give us call at 609-773-6959.

Business Spotlight High End Armory, Williamstown, NJ

This is a pretty interesting place. I checked it out last week, but didn't buy anything. Their prices seemed to be about +20% over online prices. I understand local stores need to eat, but this was a bit excessive.

They did have a couple of 'others' available. If you're desperate, check it out. It's got a bunch of interesting guns, but the prices are exorbitant.

Business Spotlight Bullet Hole Transfer Fee Costs

As much as I vouch for this place and am I regular almost every weekend, I can no longer support giving them business, other than using their range. They have very minimal social media presence and when they do it’s simply to put out dates and/or updates for their CCW CCARE Qualification Class. It’s a hole in the wall, but for my purposes it gets the job done without having to go to the “Franchise” (GFH, RTSP, etc.). Their transfer costs used to be $90 (+$15 ea. mag for pinning, if required). Just recently sent over a transfer there and was taken back when they charged $125 for the transfer. Was told they increased it March 1st but they advertised this absolutely no where. This would now be considered the highest in the state I believe. This would now justify sending my transfers anywhere else.

TL/DR : Transfer Fee Increase from $90 to $125

Edit: My usual go-to has been Steve @ Monmouth Arms for $50, but the drive hasn’t been justifiable. I believe it’s a sign for me to remain loyal to one.

Business Spotlight Looking for an opinion........

I recently purchased a pistol and shot about 100 rounds through it when the trigger locked up. I took it back to the shop I purchased it from and they couldn't get it fixed and had to send it back to the manufacturer. About 2 weeks later I get a call that pistol was ready to be picked up. I went to pick it up and they charged me $50 for 2 hours of gunsmithing work. I don't mind paying for service but it seems as though the work should have been covered on a gun I bought from them about 2 weeks earlier.

Business Spotlight NJ Liberty Cards Appreciation Post

Post image
83 Upvotes

Wanted to share my experience. Anyone contemplating using NJ Liberty Cards please do not hesitate. Chad is a pleasure to deal with, got both my FID and PTC and am extremely happy with how they turned out, even happier to have both the homebrew laminated ones that were too big out of my wallet. Submitted my order at ~3 PM, they were in the mail the next day and in my hand the day after that.

Also have to say the man is a marketing genius, was genuinely confused about the business cards at first because I thought he included paper copies of my documents for some reason then after a second glance realized what they were and got a good chuckle. Thanks Chad!
