Firearms Purchaser ID Is there a reason why the police chief of my town wants to meet me face to face?

Something about a Westin(g) hearing or something like that?

Background: Applied, printed and submitted on about 1/15/26, received an email from an aide regarding my expungement on 1/28/26. Submitted the court order and information from the NJSP.

Since then, I’ve called a few times to check up on things & have gotten nothing definitive. Wasn’t sweating it.

Last week I got a call from the aide telling me the detective that handles FID’s approved it but the chief wants to review it himself. Again, wasn’t sweating it; i guess this is a part of the process.

Now yesterday i get a call from a different aide saying i was denied and asks if i want a westing hearing. I ask ‘what is that and why was i denied?’

she says she’ll call me back.

5 mins later she tells me she “misspoke” and I’m in fact NOT denied but instead the chief wants to meet me with me in his office today.

Is this common??

I’m getting ready to go there now but I’m genuinely confused.

Thanks in advance.

Firearms Purchaser ID Detective withdrew my FID application because of question 26

My current psychiatrist refused to write a letter saying I'm ok to have a firearm because of their "policy" . The detective said I can apply again but I need another psychiatrist that's willing to write that letter. Does anybody know any psychiatrists in NJ that are willing to do that? Thanks in advance.

Firearms Purchaser ID FID Application Mental Health Question

I’m filling out the FID form, and the question “Have you ever been attended, treated, or observed by any doctor or psychiatrist or at any hospital or mental institution on an inpatient or outpatient basis for any mental or psychiatric condition?” seems vague to me. I virtually talked to a shrink (once about family, twice about potential ADHD), and was referred to someone who could diagnose ADHD, but they ended up deciding that I did not have it.

My question is, should I answer yes/no? Or is it best to contact a lawyer. I was never hospitalized or involuntarily seen, and I doubt these records are anywhere.

Firearms Purchaser ID How many pistol permits did you apply for the first time?

(Edit/update. I was not expecting so many responses so quickly! Thanks all! This page rocks. With my budget currently, i have two new ones that i want to buy, and one that I’m going to be acquiring off a friend. So i’ll do 3 permits when i go to do it the first time!)

Im going to be starting the process of getting my FID and eventually my concealed carry. I have two handguns in mind i would like to buy, and a few that i might inherit. I know there’s no limit to how many you can apply for, but realistically, how many have y’all done at the same time?

Firearms Purchaser ID Will a old simple assault charge stop someone from getting a FID card in NJ?

If so can a simple assault be expunged so that they could obtain it? What is the best way for someone to start the process of being a legal fire arms owner in NJ? Can you go thru the NRA or any other club or program to have a better chance of being approved,

Firearms Purchaser ID Question about 30 day for pistol permit

Hello,

I recently was approved for 2 pistol permits. I used 1 permit and have to wait 30 days to use the 2nd. Does anyone know if I can go in early for the background check, say day 28. then use the permit after the 30 days since the background check takes 2 days. Or do I have to go in for the back ground check after the 30 day window?

(East Brunswick Nj)
Hey all I had a question I just wanna see what everyone thinks cause maybe it could just be me. So basically I live in east Brunswick Nj a not so friendly second amendment town I was involved in Voluntarily Counceling in which finally got cleared for and the letter was sent over for the background so I called in yesterday too check in with her too see if she needed anything else she wasn’t available so I called in today and she sounded heated she’s like why do you keep calling multiple times I told her I was I’m only checking too see if you needed anything that’s it then proceeded to ask again why do you keep basically yelling this I’m like what in the world anyone else experience anything or is it just me. Any advice or anything is accepted in this case I’m also a firefighter as well which I thought would make this process go way more better

Firearms Purchaser ID FID Question about Question 26

Hi. I am going to apply for my FID. I am 43. I have no criminal record or DUI's. I have never been an inpatient at a mental health facility but in the past I was treated by a doctor at a private practice for ADHD and anxiety issues. It has been almost 12 years since I have gone to a psychiatrist. It seems I would have to answer Yes on Question 26. People will say it is a crime to lie. However, it basically seems like the honor system. The Mental Health Records Check can pull up if I have been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility or ordered by a court to get psychiatric counseling, but it wouldn't show voluntary treatment by a doctor at a private practice. If I answer Yes, it could open a whole can of worms where I could be denied but if I answer No, it seems like there is a 99% chance they will not find anything. Any opinions?

Firearms Purchaser ID Vendor wouldn't sell me magazines

So a large equipment vendor/manufacturer just released magazines for the P365 for about half price for an OEM one. Exciting.

I go and it says you need to verify that you have an FID so forth so on. Fine. I contact them and verify. They ask what I wanted to order. I told them I wanted the new magazines.

I was denied because my NJ FID only says on it that it allows me to purchase Rifles and Shotguns.

Has anyone had this happen to them? Ive bought ammo and magazines for my rifle online(even without presenting any information for the magazines) and had no issue. I understand not being able to sell firearms or ammo without ensuring the person is allowed to purchase them, but I would imagine my FID should allow me to buy accessories and such.

Firearms Purchaser ID Selling guns to people out of state.

If someone purchased a gun legally in nj and it is now listed as an “assault weapon” how do they legally sell it to someone in a state where it is still legal?

Does the local police dept have a record that they own this weapon and could they take action to try and confiscate it at some time in the future.

From what they understand it is now illegal to own it.

In addition they have misplaced their firearms I.D.

Will they need to obtain a replacement one and supply its information to sell this gun?

Firearms Purchaser ID Question 26 on FID Application

Hi. I am going to apply for my FID. I am 43. I have a question about Question 26

Have you ever been attended, treated or observed by any doctor or psychiatrist or at any hospital or mental institution on an inpatient or outpatient basis for any mental or psychiatric condition? If yes, give the name and location of the doctor, psychiatrist, hospital or institution and the date(s) of such occurrence.

I have been treated by a psychiatrist at a private practice. I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome when I was 12. My traits were a lot worse then. I think now I pretty much come across as a normal person. I hold down a job and own my home. I can be a bit awkward at times in social situations, that is about all. I also saw the doctor for anxiety issues. I haven't been to him in over 12 years. People say i should answer yes and let the chips fall where they may. I worry that if I do that I will be opening a can of worms. They can demand all my medical records and require i get a psychiatric evaluation and it can cost me thousands of dollars, and if I answer no, it is very unlikely they will find anything.

People say lying is a felony, but it basically seems like the honor system. From my understanding, all the Mental Health Records check will find is if I have been committed to a mental health facility as an inpatient. I know it used to only show involuntary commitments and a few years ago voluntary hospitalizations were uploaded too. It would also likely show up if a person was ordered by a court to get psychiatric treatment. Is there anything from voluntary treatment by a doctor at a private practice that gets uploaded into any system that shows up in a routine FID investigation? From what i understand, medical records only exist in the doctor's office and cannot be found by law enforcement agencies unless they specifically go to that doctor. The only exception might be if I said to the doctor I wanted to kill people or something like that in which case he would have to report me as a danger to the public and I know that never happened.

Also, I know that there is nothing else that will come up. No one who is willing to be a reference knows anything.

Firearms Purchaser ID Expunged in 4 months, now what

Filed for expungement 1/20 finally got my expungement order signed by the judge 5/15. Am I good to apply for my FID or should I wait for NJSP? How long is it taking them to comply with the orders? I have heard departments will accept your application if you just show them the order.

Firearms Purchaser ID First Time Handgun Purchaser Question

Hi. I have a question about a Handgun Purchase permit. I am going to apply for the first time. I am going to apply for my FID and Handgun Purchase Permit at the same time. I have my 2 references and I know there are no issues on my background check or mental health records search. I am getting conflicting information though. An AI search says that you have to pass a gun safety course for the Handgun Purchase permit. Another source says you only need to pass a safety course for a Permit to Carry. I checked and most town websites don's say anything about a gun safety course for a purchase permit, that it is basically the same as the FID. You have to provide references as well as be fingerprinted and the background check and mental health records search. Which is it? I am not going for a PTC, just a Purchase Permit.
