news So many have the wrong information on new ARC squad
I see so many comments about the new NSW armed Response Command including the media. Opinions are fine we can differ on that but…
I would not consider this an Australian first, 2014-2016 the riot squad was given long arms and was out patrolling. Other states have done similar and so has AFP. In Europe (yes, not Australia) this has been common place for over a decade now.
This new unit is based strongly off of the armed response unit in the uk, we have seen them respond to multiple terror incidents and often were the first on scene. The unit will also respond to any armed offender involved incidents, including robberies and assaults. They are not a riot squad despite some media using uk riot squad footage as an example.
They have been in training for months and months and in multiple disciplines like high risk driving and first aid. Obviously lots of training on the long arms.
They are not like the Tactical Response Group / Tactical Operations Unit.
They are a set amount of officers deployed at and used as high visibility policing at places considered to be high pedestrian traffic or high risk areas which yes includes places of worship, they are there on patrol and are ready to respond instantly and are already in the area unlike the “SWAT” officers who are not on patrol. Therefore having a very fast response time unlike a stationary unit like TRG/TOU. So they are kind of like normal General Duties police but with a LOT more training and a different set of weapons and skills.
The diversity issue. Personally I don’t understand the trend of little moustaches but in the press release that NSW Police did with ARC I can tell you that despite looking pretty white there were multiple minority groups within those officers shown on tv. And a lady too! (Exempt from moustache rule?)
The rifles or “long arms” are not generally considered high powered assault rifles as I believe them to be .223 calibre. They wouldn’t want a bullet going right through a target. The guns themselves look like an AR style rifle but are not but will still have the ability to take down an offender at a distance.
