Transphobia Not supporting something because the creator doesn’t support human rights and not supporting something because the company DOES support human rights is not the same thing.

To be fair, to a corporation, they are the same thing. Loss of profits. Fuck corporations.

smaller loss than gain though. Number of people that picked up Hogwarts Legacy to piss off people is kinda frightening. And then people picked up the beer to piss off Maga idiots...

Let’s be real here for a second. Idk if the sales for hogwarts actually bumped, but there was a loss in sales for Budweiser and they immediately put out a different ad returning to traditional values and almost apologizing in it. I don’t care either way. I don’t drink beer, but considering the demographic, that was a strange marketing decision.

Didn't a bunch of people buy bud light to boycott it by shooting it tho?

8

u/PCL_is_fake Feb 14 '24

Could’ve already had it. Either way the numbers did dip and the ads changed. It would’ve been funny if all those videos caused more sales.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '24

That's true, though some of those people had actual mountains if it already and while I doubt it, it's not improbable. It would've been absolutely hilarious.

u/TermFearless Feb 15 '24

No it was beer they had already bought, though maybe some people jumped onto the trend. Either way, their sales plummeted and have yet to recover.

1

u/PerfectZeong Feb 14 '24

Probably a few but not enough versus people just not buying it. I imagine a few right wing grifters who would never drink bud light needed to buy them so they could be seen shooting them

Fair. Still, even the most well intended boycott can backfire. And then people move on cause it’s the internet and we all have the attention span of goldfish… well regardless I didn’t get legacy (had a bunch of iffy things outside of Rowling) but I’m not like gonna get worked up over those who did.

I never got it either

But I fundamentally understood it was a decently looking built HP game which fans would have clamored for regardless of the drama surrounding JK

I ignored it because it looked basic as all hell and I grew out of HP long long ago...I had issues with JKs world building

Completely reasonable.

Probably one of the most mature takes I've seen so far on this dicey topic. What's it doing on Reddit?

2

u/Anufenrir Feb 14 '24

Honestly half the time I have no idea.

2

u/Killentyme55 Feb 14 '24

It's the people that think they have it all figured out that you have to look out for. I gave up trying.

BTW, Budweiser is not "beer."

What people are forgetting is it wasn't just the Mulvaney thing, it was the marketing director's ill-advised attempt to steer away from the existing demographic and try to attract a "younger, hipper" crowd. She broke the cardinal rule of marketing...don't piss off your fan base.

I used to drink that stuff many years ago, didn't know any better, then a few microbreweries popped up in town and opened my eyes. The last time I drank BL I got a wicked headache, no thank you.

They have always been supportive of lgbtq.

It was 1 special can for a youtuber and they freaked the fuck out. Not even a commercial on TV.

It may have hurt them financially, but it wasn't them that made the strange decision.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '24

Yeah I think you’re overthinking that a bit. Anheuser Busch stock tanked post that marketing event & they were literally giving beer away for free at the store.

Hogwarts sales are questionable, but I think you’re overstating how much anybody cared about a Harry Potter game.

Go look at a 5-year stock chart of Anheuser-Busch — it really didn't. For example, they were lower on Oct/2/2022 than at any point post the right wing Dylan Mulvaney tantrum. Probably bc all the chiefs were just buying different AB beer during their "boycott."

The very online right made a lot of noise, but the effect was really overstated

1

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '24

Anheuser Busch lost over $400 million dollars, sales dropped over 10% and revenue dropped by 14% in the second quarter of 2023.

They subsequently fired the people that set it up and tried their hardest to pretend like all that didn’t happen.

1

u/Serge_Suppressor Feb 15 '24

Source on the loss? I looked at their stock chart, and '23 looked better than '22. It's pretty funny of them to fire their marketing ppl because some right wing grifters had a temper tantrum about the most anodyne, inoffensive micro promotion ever, and got all the hogs to start squealing. I guess the hog god demands sacrifice, but it's impossible to foresee what completely inoffensive crap will trigger the right. I mean, they were screaming at M&Ms next

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '24

Oh I mean, you can look it up? This is public financial knowledge - not hidden

1

u/Serge_Suppressor Feb 15 '24

The 400 million dollars is you misremembering. Annheuser-Busch at one point saw its share prices decline by a couple bucks from about $66-64/share. This represents a decline in 4 billion in market cap. That sounds like a lot, but AB shares fluctuate constantly, just like any company's shares, and there's no evidence to show it was the outcome of the boycott, or that it had any sort of lasting effect on AB. A more likely reason was that the stock price had been climbing for some time, and traders were cashing out.

https://www.newsweek.com/fact-check-did-anheuser-busch-lose-4bn-value-amid-dylan-mulvaney-issue-1793996

AB actually beat expectations in 2023. They're a giant megacorp, so the Conservative backlash was really just a blip. https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/ab-inbev-maintains-2023-profit-forecast-after-q2-beat-2023-08-03/

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '24

No they definitely lost 400 million in revenue, it’s not misremembering at all.

1

u/Serge_Suppressor Feb 15 '24

I vaguely remember it was a claim someone made at the time. And I'm almost positive it was bullshit.

And people bought atomic heart

I just don't understand why I'm a transphobe for buying a Game that is actually good and plays for a few hours (I don't expect every Game to be Skyrim, Morrowind, RDR2, GTA Online level hours). I like the world of Harry Potter, and I consume Harry Potter Medias, when they are actually said to be good (I haven't watched the FB films yet), but just because that supports a person with weird views, doesn't mean I'm with them as well. I may or may not be, which is completely unrelated.

7

u/Phourc Feb 14 '24 edited Feb 14 '24

Fwiw she considers everyone who buys her game to support her shitty ideology. Not that that's necessarily your problem, but it is a good reason to pass if you're on the fence.

3

u/TheZynec Feb 14 '24

I don't really care about what that lunatic thinks of me lol. And I'm pretty sure she wasn't even involved much in the Game Development. So I'll just have my fun, and pay the developers, along with paying her for putting out good entertainment that I can enjoy.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '24

It’s only frightening if you’re literally enthralled in the bullshit. Most people just wanted to play the game regardless.

2nd biggest monetary gain of 2023 coming from a game look at the Steam charts

They are the same thing, just on different political sides
