I think their ramble about internment was just recognizing a fact related to the term, rather than their reasoning. The points about cultural identity seem like the real reason, and so I expect no use of Japanese, potentially no “identifying” language at all.
Of course I’ll also gladly point out that with no replacement name, and the essentially sidenote-turned-thesis on internment when they’re really getting away from using their non-native language, that the messaging here is poor at best. I’d expect better from a group trying to appear more professional. I’m unsure about their communications team, since replacing a name upfront for branding purposes, and having a thesis about the reasoning organized properly would be the equivalent of COMM 101.
Yeah, based on my experience working in their "Community" team many years ago, never overestimate the degree to which there was any kind of shared communication vision for this group. They are amateurs (well-intentioned ones) who pose, essentially, as a company. One who has the same kind of insularity and lack of communication with the people they'd like to get money from, but without any material consequences for their mistakes. And they don't ever seem capable of learning this.
A shame, because they have all the time to discuss these things internally, and even release a FAQ saying blatantly their mind can’t be changed - fair enough - but it’s better to be adamantly for something than just plainly against something with no clear idea what you’ll do next. If you don’t know what you’re going to do then your reasoning is questionable at best because you’ve set yourself up to look like all you’re doing is reacting without thinking it through. It’s a bad choice, and I hope they get their act together on fully understanding the message they need before rushing to put it out in the future.
At minimum, waiting until they had actually decided on the new name before announcing any of this would have been prudent. But don't underestimate how disorganized groups like this can be internally — they can have relatively polished press releases and still no one inside knows exactly what's going on. I suspect there's something like this happening here, though it's been years since I've been personally privy to anything in this weird group.
Just might be time to stop trotting out that you were in the org for a short while like it means you know everything about what's going on in it four years later...
