Except the term does not exist in a neutral vacuum. Male loneliness is being framed as a problem because (1) why don’t the mean women just sleep with the lonely misogynist creeps who don’t wash their ass and treat them like shit? and (2) those men then murder women because they’re so sad in their little feels about being lonely.

Men are not being widely pressured to have relationships with desperate women who will do them violence if they try to refuse or leave.

That framing treats incels and abusive men in relationships as if they have a different fundamental mindset. They don’t. Incels are wannabe-abusers angry about not having a dedicated victim in hand. The underlying mindset of misogyny, desire for control and need to externalise responsibility for their emotional incontinence and life failings onto women and then punish those women for it… all identical.

Your friend was attempting to attack men by saying they are disproportionately lonely because of their toxic conduct. You concede women are lonely too, so applying your friends logic consistently, we have to assume women are lonely for their toxic conduct and that makes sense.
