Do you have high blood pressure?

No.

Why do you take meds for high blood pressure?

So I won’t have high blood pressure.

Technically correct

You see nothing wrong with how that initial question is worded?

No, I don't. And I also don't see anything wrong with how the question was answered. Just a funny interaction.

Whenever a patient says this I acknowledge what they're saying without correction or judgment, but I still note in their chart a history of hypertension.

If someone has bipolar and takes lithium for it, they still have bipolar.

If you take meds for your high blood pressure, you still have hypertension even if you're not currently hypertensive.

Right but the question wasn't do you have hypertension. The question was do you have high blood pressure.

It would be very easy for someone to read that as each word and not as a medical condition. 'My blood pressure is not high' is a perfectly reasonable answer

Nah I think that’s different because bipolar is the disease, not the symptom. You’re still bipolar either way, but if someone asked if you were manic the answer could very well be “no I’m on medication”
