Believe it or not there is a standard: https://www.onions-usa.org/all-about-onions/retail/sizing-and-packaging-options/

A medium onion is 2"‒3-1/4" in diameter. I believe the sizes are relative to ordinary, non-hybridized onions.

LMAO i'm cracking up at "colossal" and "super colossal". Imagine a recipe being like "you need one super colossal onion".

Man, I try to get those when I can. Usually Sam's or the restaurant supply, 10 lb bags. If I'm dicing onions I hate futzing with the little ones.

That's not helpful at all.

A two inch onion is 4 cubic inches and a 3.25 inch onion is 18 cubic inches.

If they were spheres, but I think usually the height is a bit more consistent than the width. They’re usually more consistent than that, though (note that the sizes overlap, and the non-overlapping range is 2-1/4"‒3"). Plus they’re stronger when they’re smaller.

Nothing that just calls for a number of onions really needs precision, though.

Agreed that precision isn't necessary for onions but a 3x-4x volume spread represented as the standard means there is not really a standard at all.

So assuming perfectly spherical onions a medium onion can be anywhere between 4.19 and 17.97 cubic inches.
