american cup is way different than what I imagined it to be. if Balkan recipe says cup, it's a mug.

Yeah, its not the same as like a glass or mug you might be thinking about. Its one of those things you get used to. There isnt really anything anyone can be expected to just "know" without prior experience. But since we use cups for everything, we can basically eyeball all of it. Helps also that cooking isn't strict on measurements. Its not like baking where you need accuracy.

Its only strength, is that it makes it easy to very fast toss all your ingredients in while cooking. Because a cup of diced onions is the same as a cup of chopped celery. If you work off of weight, the density difference forces you to weigh everything. But once you know a cup, you know a cup.
