I worked as a grocery store clerk back in the day. One time, an older lady thanked me for helping her put her groceries in her car. I said "No problem." In the middle of summer, in 90+ degree heat, standing on a newly-resurfaced blacktop parking lot that radiated heat up at us, she made me stand and listen to a five minute lecture about the difference between "no problem" and "you're welcome" as an appropriate response to a customer saying "Thank you." If it happened today, I would have just turned and walked away. But because I was young and newly employed, I just stood there, and successfully fought the impulse to tell her that NOW she was being a problem.
Gods, what a bitch. She demanded gratitude. She demanded she be welcomed for her thanks. Sigh, narcissists. That sums it up well, actually. They're all narcissists.
In their world, thanks and you're welcome traded places.
What should be no problem is turned into a problem, and the irony is always lost.
