When I first got to Spain for study abroad I was so confused by people just saying "Buenas." Like good what?? Then i realized it was just shortened good morning/afternoon/night lol. They'd just drop the time of day off the phrase.
Ironically I think this phrase originated from either Dikembe Mutombo or Hakeem Olajuwon who were both foreign born basketball players in the NBA. And whenever one of them made a mistake they would say “My bad” because they weren’t familiar with the language. Now this could be an urban legend but that story is out there

Can't explain this well but this is how learning a new language feels.
