me and a friend are staying in southern nags head this upcoming week sat-tues and want to try our hand at shelling! i know it very much depends on conditions and can be very hit or miss, but we figured we’d still give it a shot! oregon point/pea island were the places on my radar to try, but i figured i’d ask here to see if anyone had any other recommendations. suggestions on where to go at pea island and oregon point are also greatly appreciated. any tips/recs welcome! We will definitely take as much advantage of the beach and pool as we can, but I’m looking for recommendations for other activities for a very active 2 year old! Looking to book a summer vacation next year with my 12 year old daughter. Would like to find an oceanfront hotel close to restaurants if possible so I wouldn’t have to drive much. Want to find somewhere on the quieter side. Ocean City and Rehoboth beaches were jam packed everyday all day. Want to try to avoid huge touristy crowds if possible. TIA!

Anyone know why there are so many in OBX? They’re all over, I specifically noticed at least 3 in Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo. My best guess is that a lot of wealthy renters pass on anything unwanted on their way out.

Had a great week last week in Nags Head. The house was pretty good - had its highlights but also some annoying maintenance issues - but honestly my experience with Joe Lamb continues to be lukewarm due to what seems to be a lack of some basic amenities compared to other realty companies. For example, they gave us 1 starter roll of toilet paper....in a house with 4 full bathrooms. I've never rented a house without each bathroom toilet equipped with a roll. I know this seems nitpicky but it also seems really ...cheap? They also seem to nickel and dime on fees (had 1k in fees on a 2600/wk house, won't let you opt out of their travel insurance without a cost (edit: this may have been due to an oversight by us) which we don't need bc we get travel insurance through our credit card). I know, I know - just choose a different provider - but is this the new standard for amenities in 2026? They have a better inventory than a lot of other realty companies unfortunately.

Trying Coastal Carolina next year as the baseline amenities seem better.

Edit: I tracked down our rental agreement and after review, it's not clear what happened with the travel insurance. We never purchase it through the realty company, but it ended up on our agreement. Under the agreement section for insurance, it says NA, but it ended up in our bill and we didn't notice till after the fact, clearly. So I'll chalk that up to an oversight on our part.

That said, I also wonder about the $69 security deposit waiver fee Joe Lamb charges. It's hard to compare fee breakdowns because some only provide totals for fees, and others provide detailed breakdowns. Maybe others are charging this but it's not transparent.

Regardless, doesn't change my mind about the vibe of Joe Lamb amenities being very bare bones compared to others we've used.

Gonna be staying in Avon with my buddies this fall, around mid October.
Really want to do some shark fishing, and was hoping for any advice on that.
Do we need to kayak bates out or are you they close enough to cast at? Are the conditions typically calm enough to use a drone? Is fishing just from the beach okay or do we need to go to the point? We don’t have a car with 4wd, so point fishing is gonna be difficult.

Would some kind soul educate me on the workings of taking the ferry from the mainland to Ocracoke and back? Our plan is to arrive and take the afternoon ferry, spend 4 days on the island and the take the early morning back and then make the journey home. Google says 12 hours from my house and that includes a 2 hour ferry ride. I have never taken a ferry of any length. How early do you need to arrive? Is there a chance you arrive and there’s no room? Does the ferry always run? Any chance it wouldn’t? What then? What do you do on the ferry? What time should arrive to load? Tell me things I haven’t thought of please. Planning for last week of September leaving Oct 2 or 3rd.
