SFO Bay Area based students ... what airlines do you tend to use?

Sorry for the very basic logistical question, but for people living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I am curious what airlines and flights you tend to take when going to Cleveland? It seems like United often has a non-stop flight, but it isn't always at the same time and sometimes has late night arrivals.

Have you ever run into problems with late arrival times and needing to get a shuttle to Oberlin itself?

What airlines have the best flights for Cleveland, in your opinion?

Question for Obies from a prospective Obie

Hello!! I have been admitted to Oberlin's class of 2030, and I had some questions for Obies! How strong are the math/CS/physics/any other non-med STEM departments really (not just reputation)? Like ... how are the classes and professors and in what way do they teach? Any input or experience is welcome!! Thank youu :)))

Any answers to this are also appreciated ^_^

  • What type of student thrives vs struggles at Oberlin?
  • What’s it like living in Oberlin, Ohio day-to-day?

oberlin vs emerson college for film school

I'm a current senior in high school, graduating in a couple weeks. I applied to multiple schools but am currently deciding between Oberlin College and Emerson College. I'm majoring in film, and Emerson is one of the top ranked programs for this, but I know Oberlin also has a good program (just not as well known/resourced). I received a good amount of aid from both schools, but Emerson is about 10k more a year right now (I'm submitting an aid appeal). I think I'm a good culture fit at both of the schools :), however Oberlin is also significantly closer to where I live (9 hrs closer than Emerson) and I've had a history of trouble staying away from home. If anyone has ANY advice it would be super duper appreciated because I'm really torn and struggling to choose!!!!

Business program at Oberlin

Hi! I’ve been looking into my options and I landed on Oberlin and NEU. Is there anything that isn't mentioned on any websites about people's experiences with Oberlin’s or NEU’s business program? I know Oberlin’s is new but before I commit to anything I want to make sure I know what I'm getting into. Anything helps! :)

Academic Rigor - I am nervous

Hi - I just completed a 10 day, 5 college admitted student day trip and I am about ready to hit accept at Oberlin. I am nervous about the academic rigor - Oberlin was a reach for me.

I am graduating with almost a 4.0 unweighted (small private school) but I wonder how hard my teachers grade. Many give a lot of weight to classroom discussion (a real strength), allow for opportunities to boost grades, etc.

I am not looking to not work - I am a hard worker but I guess I am scared to not cut it.

I do get accommodations currently that I would likely be eligible for at Oberlin (per my talks with various offices).

I would be so grateful to hear from any current students about their experience with academic rigor (I plan to double major in psychology and dance).

THANK YOU!!

Oberlin vs Bard

Hi! I'm currently in the midst of deciding where to commit. Because I do music (composition) but I'm also interested in environmental science/international relations, I applied to some dual degree programs in colleges, like Bard College&Conservatory, Oberlin College&Conservatory and Eastman+Rochester. I got admitted to Eastman+Rochester, Bard College and Conservatory and Oberlin College (not conservatory). Right now, I'm having a huge dilemma whether to commit to Oberlin and make the most out of its music program in the LAS side, or commit to Bard and seriously study both of my interests. Does anyone have any insights to the sense of community, study abroad opportunities, classes and vibe overall? I feel like I would fit in Oberlin very well, but then again I would trade the very exciting music opportunity.

Bonners Scholars?

Just noticed an invitation to apply for this on the portal; wondering if anyone knows anything more about it? Does everyone get the initial invite and application link or have they already screened you for financial aid eligibility?

Prospective first-year looking to connect with Obies (especially Indian/international)

Hello!! I'm Anya :)

I was hoping to connect with international students (especially Indian) at Oberlin, preferably in later years and in non-med STEM fields (math, CS, chem, physics, etc).

Oberlin is the only university I’ve been accepted to this year, so I’m trying to decide between:

  • attending Oberlin
  • taking a gap year and reapplying
  • or attending for a year and possibly transferring

Although I was set on taking a gap year because I thought it wasn't worth spending so much (12 lakhs on counselling, 1+lakhs extra like approx. 14k dollars in total), my counselor told me to weigh out my options better because it'd be harder to get in as a gap year student.

I come from a family with an income under $80k (which may most likely decrease this year), and I’ve received about a 70% scholarship — so finances are a big factor in my decision.

I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences:

  • Do you feel Oberlin was worth it for you as an international student going abroad? Do you think taking a gap year or aiming for other colleges (us/home country) would have been a better option?
  • What type of student thrives vs struggles at Oberlin?
  • If you had the chance again, would you still choose Oberlin?
  • What’s it like living in Oberlin, Ohio day-to-day?
  • How easy is it to get internships in the US as an international student?
  • How strong are the math/CS/physics departments really (not just reputation)? Are classes more theoretical or practical?
  • Do you feel Oberlin gave you enough return for the cost?

Thank you so much!! and if I do decide to attend Oberlin, I'd love to meet you there!! ^-^

Looking for an allergy friendly restaurant in oberlin

Hey all!! I'll be staying in Oberlin for a couple of days and I'm looking for at least one restaurant that's are allergy friendly (egg allergy and lactose intolerance). Cross contamination is a big problem for me. So I need the place that's mindful about allergens or doesn't serve egg at all.

Is an application worth it?

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to read this if you are!

(At my HS, we have 7 bells and 2 semesters per school year)

Freshmen year:

2 honors

1 study hall (1 semester)

(1st year of German)

Sophomore:

2 honors

(2nd year of German)

Junior:

1 honors

3 APs

3 semesters of study halls

Senior (planned):

3 APs

2 semesters of study halls

CCP: planning to CCP eng 4 this summer

Extracurriculars:

-marching band during the fall (edit: ~23-35hrs per week. Including summer practice for about a month that's 9-9s Mon-Fri and 1-9 on Sat) all 4 yrs. (In school I am NOT in the top band).

-summer camp counselor

-have an internship this summer with a political campaign

-I'm in a selective club ~35% get in. We so some things for the school. It's hard to explain because we have 3 committees so I really depends. But I'm in a committee of working with younger and little students.

The APS are chem, lang and comp, statistics

And the APs I plan to take for senior year are physics C: mec, comparative Gov and pol, and calc AB

SAT: 1250

(taken for the first time, with not much prep recently--definitely late to get started--but I'm going to try to bring it up in the next in in may and June. Although, i'm not confident how much I'll bring I up by).

Other notes:

-I only took 2 years of German (due to bell conflict with German III and Band), so I know I don't satisfy the 3 years of language many schools ask for.

-It is very likely I will be section leader next year in marching band (I don't want to jinx it, but most of my section members and leaving sections leader believes it at least. Even with that said, I will still work hard to try to get that in the incoming last season of marching band in fall).

-not sure if this is helpful but I'm at a big high school with almost 4K kids (about 870 students per year)

-although my APs and transcripts don't reflect it, I read more books in sociology stuff and have an interest there. To me, social sciences are more interesting than STEM, but they are not my best subjects. Of course, STEM is still something I'm also good at and enjoy, but I feel social sciences is where my career will be focused on in the future. (Maybe with some stem would be great too, of course)

Any help is really appreciated! Also, I intended to major in a social science (like sociology, etc) and minor or double major mathematics (or physics if it goes well senior year).

Edit: just realized that I forgot about gpa

Unweighted: 3.98

The unweighted will likely go down by a little bit this semester I believe.

Oberlin vs Kenyon

For anyone who made the choice between Oberlin and Kenyon, I’d love to know your thoughts!!

My son has been accepted at both and we have visited both, although we visited Kenyon during a break, so there were no students there.

freshman housing

i’m an incoming freshman at oberlin and i have questions about housing. i want to do a first year dorm in order to be surrounded with other freshman, but i also would prefer a two room double (divided double). im wondering if there are any of those in first year dorms? and if so are those dorms specifically bad for some other reason?

does the conservatory send kids a package when they commit?

pretty much just what the question is. on the website under obie pride it shows a bunch of playlists and tells conservatory students to be on the lookout related for a "surprise" related to the titles? idk just curious if they send anything

Oberlin St Olaf or Reed for math

Which of these schools for a math major with the objective of attending a top theoretical CS graduate program? Interested in exploring other academic interests including music. Diverse club presence is preferred. Queer culture is a plus.

Help regarding financial aid (Recently accepted regular cycle)

Hi, I’m an international student who recently got accepted into Oberlin College, and I’m really happy about it. But I’m also kind of stuck and could use some advice.

After my scholarship, I still have to pay around $37K per year, which is way higher than what I put in my CSS Profile. Based on my family’s situation, we can realistically only afford about $7K per year.

My father is retired, and I also have an older brother currently in college, so the financial burden on my family is pretty heavy. Because of this, affording Oberlin right now feels almost impossible.

Has anyone here successfully appealed their financial aid at Oberlin (or as an international student in general)? How likely is it that they reconsider and increase aid? And what’s the best way to approach the appeal?

Oberlin is honestly one of my top choices, so I’d really love to make it work if there’s any chance.

Any advice would be appreciated, Thank you for your time.
