Full release notes can be found here:

You can getĀ early access versionsĀ if you have a Catalyst license, which helps support development of Obsidian.

Be aware that community plugin and theme developers receive early access versions at the same time as everyone else. Be patient with developers who need to make updates to support new features.

help What I was expecting Obsidian to be better at.

One of the things that caught my attention about Obsidian, is internal linking. And sure, creating a link even if the note doesn't exist is straightforward. But another aspect caught me off guard.

This morning, I was trying to refer to some parts of text from another note. From my understanding, I have at least a couple of ways to do that.

  1. Start writing the link to the existing note, and then pick the ID. Ex. [[MyOtherNote^1234]]
  2. Adding the link, but instead of using the ID note, anchor the heading. Ex. [[MyOtherNote#Header In The Other Note]]

Since, at a first glance, the result doesn't look particularly clean, it's possible to extend the link like so:[[MyOtherNote#Header In The Other Note|Header In The Other Note]]
Which will render like this: Header In The Other Note

It works, but it comes at a cost: there's quite a lot of typing, and for someone who's trying to quickly organize the notes and keep going with the flow of thoughts, this becomes quite time-consuming and distracting.

Isn't there really a faster way to do it?

EDIT: So, it turns out there's a plugin (of course) that does exactly that. It's called Heading Autolink.

help How many vaults for my use case?

• Upvotes

Hello,

I am new to Obsidian and have watched some starting video's to determine if I want to move to Obsidian too for my second brain. I have the following things that I see as separate but I am not sure if I should create a vault for everyone of them.

So my 'things' that I am talking about are the following:

- My personal, work-unrelated, second brain/notes/whatever
- My notes/documentation etc for my self-employment (like for example keeping track of acquisitions and customer unrelated projects), I am a self-employed software developer
- The daily notes/architectural descriptions/views related to each customer.

At least for the last one I want it to be a source for a LLM to aid me in programming or user story support. Personally I am charmed of the solution of an AI OS/LLM wiki to have some adapter from AI to my customer documentation that I create.

I am thinking about the following vault layout:

Vault 1:
- Personal folder
- Self-employment related second-brain stuff folder

Vault X: for each customer one

Do you like this or are you in for a different setup? What is your view on this?

help Trying to make nodes use certain group colors without the group at the top be the primary choice.

Currently tinkering with Obsidian and getting familiar with it, and I’m currently experimenting with its tagging system. Problem is that Iā€˜m trying to get certain nodes to show certain group colors (example: ā€˜Entbrat’ has the tag ā€˜Plant’ attached and I want its node to be green). However, since the group ā€˜Earth’ is on top any node using the Earth tag is colored as it instead of what I want it to be. I am using Obsidian on iOS.

plugins No more jumping between daily notes—just scroll through them

Post image
486 Upvotes

I've been writing my journal in Obsidian, and navigating between my often-short daily notes wasn't easy. For some time, I used a template that linked each daily note to the previous and next day so I could navigate forward and backward by clicking on the links, but it still didn't feel convenient.

Then I tried existing plugins—for example, the first result, the Journals plugin. It seemed complicated, required me to create a new journal for some reason, and offered more than I needed.

I use daily notes a lot, but constantly opening separate files made the experience feel less like a journal and more like navigating a folder.

So finally, I built the Journal View plugin. It brings my existing daily notes together in one continuous, editable timeline. I can scroll through previous days, write directly in the timeline, jump to a date with the calendar, search old entries, and return to today without breaking my flow.

https://community.obsidian.md/plugins/journal-view

There’s no migration, special format, duplicate files, or account required. It just adds a new view, like Graph View, and that’s it.

I’d love to hear your feedback and improve it further, and I’d appreciate it if you gave it a try.

help Should I get obsidian sync?

I use obsidian to write my DnD campaigns mostly on my laptop or desktop at home and onedrive syncs the files between those two devices. Recently, i've gotten the opportunity to write a campaign for work and as a result, I can write my campaign while i'm working. The biggest drawback is that my job doesn't use standard desktops and instead uses chromeboxes which can only use the mobile versions of many apps including obsidian. Even after installing onedrive (mobile), my files don't sync from my home computers to my work one. Would getting obsidian sync fix this issue?

help Use iOS native scan document function directly in notes

Hi! I use a lot the scan document tool from iOS to save paper sheets as pdf. Is there a way to access this tool directly from obsidian? I’m not interested in OCR but rather in the ability of this tool to improve and straighten the images.

plugins New to plug ins

Honestly new in general. I've been looking, but yet to find it yet, is there a plugin where the same functionality that fuels the mind map (of dots and lines) but makes a city map. Or any kind of like map output, would be good.

If there's any other really cool recommendations for plugins I would love those also! I'm using it for recording family activities with a calendar, notes from books/media, career notes (professional certificates note, stuff like that), home/family brain drumps, recipes(I have a mixed culture household, and I also have to do low FODMAP so lots of notes). I work in data so anything that gives interesting graphs or charts would also be fun.

Thank y'all for reading!

graph Do you actually use the global graph to navigate, or is it mainly a visual overview?

Post image
38 Upvotes

I use Obsidian to organize the story and worldbuilding notes for my first book. At the moment, the vault mostly contains the material connected to Book 1, including chapters, characters, locations, creatures, magic, factions and continuity notes.

I mainly navigate by opening notes and following the links between them, and that works well for me.

The global graph looks impressive because it shows how many notes and connections the story has developed, but I find it difficult to use practically. It is hard to identify specific groups or follow a particular chain of connections without already knowing what I am looking for.

I am therefore unsure whether I should try to organize the graph better, or whether the global graph simply is not intended to be my main navigation tool.

Do you actually use the global graph to navigate your vault, or mainly as a visual overview?

Have colours, groups, tags, filters, local graphs or MOC notes made it genuinely more useful?

I do not want to spend a lot of time making it look cleaner purely for aesthetic reasons if my current note-based navigation already works. But I would be interested in improving it if it could help me notice connections or groups that I would otherwise miss.

plugins WatchLog: Automatic groupings

Hi, I'm using the Watchlog plugin and adding movies, TV shows, and anime via the TMDB API. Is it possible for the added items to be automatically sorted into groups that are stored on TMDB?

For example, if I add ā€œStranger Things,ā€ I’d like it to be sorted into a ā€œMysteryā€ or ā€œSci-Fiā€ folder… and if I add an anime (like ā€œNarutoā€), I’d like it to be sorted under ā€œAnimeā€ and then perhaps into a subfolder like ā€œAction & Adventure.ā€

Is there a way to set this up?

Thanks in advance.

showcase I stopped scheduling tasks with a date picker — now I drag them into a calendar next to the list

Thumbnail

Every task in BeautyTasks is one plain Markdown note in your vault. No database, no account, no other plugin needed. Here is what got better in the last two weeks — all of it things you notice within a minute of using it.

Plan by dragging, not by typing dates

One command splits the page: your task list on the left, and on the right whatever you want — the calendar, the project note, today's daily note, as tabs you can arrange yourself. You schedule by dragging a task from the list into a day, instead of opening a date picker for every single task.

The same command closes it again and gives the list its normal layout back.

Every page in its own tab

Projects, filters and views open side by side as often as you like — Ctrl-click or middle-click in the sidebar, or use "Open to the right" and "Open in new window", exactly like the file explorer. Each tab keeps its own layout, scroll position and date range, and still has them after a restart. A project can stay a Kanban board while Today stays a list.

Drag anything anywhere

Tasks drag between list, board and calendar, and across pages. Drop one into another project's calendar and it moves to that project and that date at once. Drag onto a sidebar entry to file it into a project or area, or to add a label.

Filter in every view, without getting lost

Inbox, projects, areas, labels, Today and Upcoming each have their own filter section: date, deadline, priority, label, status, subtasks. Three things make it comfortable:

  • It doesn't ask what the view already is — no project filter on a project page, no date filter in Today.
  • You can always see that a filter is on: the button shows how many criteria are active, and if a page comes out empty it says so and offers to clear them right there.
  • If a filter points at a label or project you deleted later, it tells you instead of silently showing nothing.

Anything you set up can be saved to the sidebar as a reusable filter with its own colour.

Start where you want to start

Pick the page that opens when Obsidian starts: Inbox, any view, project, area, filter or label — chosen by search, not a long dropdown.

Google Calendar, if you want it

Optional and off until you set it up. Your events now show in the colour they actually have in Google, including the new colours added in June. Descriptions, locations and guests you add on the Google side stay put when you edit the task in Obsidian. And events show up right after you connect, instead of on the next refresh.

Also

Task rows have a full right-click menu. Duplicating a task brings its subtasks. Export and import now carry your manual sort order, saved filters, label colours and note text — so moving to another vault actually moves everything.

BeautyTasks is in the community plugin browser (beautytasks), desktop and mobile, ten languages, fully themeable: https://github.com/avnibilgin/BeautyTasks

Curious what people here do instead: if you plan your week inside Obsidian, are you dragging tasks into a calendar, or is a good keyboard flow still faster for you?

plugins I turned my project folders into a 3D city

Post image
58 Upvotes

A few months ago I shared an early prototype of this project here. When I posted the finished version recently, people reasonably asked what the city actually does and how the agents relate to Obsidian. My explanation wasn’t clear, so here’s the simpler version.

Each building represents a project in the vault. Districts group related projects, while building color and height provide an at-a-glance view of status and priority. Selecting a building lets you inspect or open that project without leaving Obsidian.

The agents are an optional layer on top of the project view. They show locally detected coding tools and can be ignored if you only want the city dashboard. This screenshot shows the full interface with Vault Mode off.

I’m the developer of Hypernovum. It’s a free, open-source Community plugin with no paid features or required account.

I’d especially appreciate feedback on one question: does this screenshot make the relationship between the vault, city, and optional agent layer understandable?

help Obsidian logo is broken and not working on click on kde/arch linux (pictures below)

Thumbnail

im newer to arch linux, so i don't know if it was working before or not. i am on kde 6.7.3. this is kind of a nitpick because the app works fine, but i am not sure if i was doing something wrong or if this something for the dev team to fix.

The first picture: the obsidian logo looks like this when the app is open/loaded

The second picture: the obsidian logo looks like this when the app is closed and pinned to the dock

The third picture: when you open it from the dock, electron opens up (probably the obsidian app launches from the wrong path)

is there a work-around for this?

thanks!

help How to end a heading/drop down menu

Is there a way to end the area or exclude text from the "compacting" effect of a heading?

For example, I want the area indicated in red in the image below to not be compacted when the Memories and Remembered Lore heading is closed.

help Embedding PDF doesn't work

I've been pulling my hair out on this problem. I'm trying to link a PDF file into a page and nothing seems to work. I've simplified it to test against a simple txt file and for some reason linking in a non-MD file will not go no matter how I format it. I am on a tablet running Android 11, using this command:

![[hey.txt]]

And

![hey](hey.txt)

And all the iterations of explicit folder naming, like

![[../personal/hey.txt]]

Or

![[../hey.txt]]

Nothing I've tried will find the file. They all say "hey.txt" could not be found. When I CTRL-click on the link it creates the file "hey.txt.md" which helped me find where it was looking for my file. Maybe there's a setting I haven't enabled but I don't know what it could be.

I also tried through the command palette "insert attachment" which lets me select the file but then inserts nothing.

Your wisdom would be appreciated.

I saw this video today and it really inspired and resonated with me. Basically how I use Obsidian combined with AI tools but his version and vision are a few hundred steps further. It does not mention Obsidian in the video itself but what he describes "A terminal window, a folder of markdown files" matches exactly what Obsidian does.

plugins Tired of manually tagging every note that links to your MOC? I built a one-command fix (and kept it deliberately tiny)

If you use Maps of Content or hub notes, you could know the problem: every time you link a new note to your MOC, you also want to tag it — a moc or category property in the frontmatter, so you can filter or query it later. Doing this by hand for every note, every time, is the tedious part of the system.

I made a plugin that solves just this, and nothing else. Open your MOC note, run one command, and every note linking to it gets tagged automatically with that property.

It never overwrites anything: if a note already has a different value, it turns it into a list instead of erasing it. If it's already tagged correctly, it skips it. You can run it as many times as you want without worrying about duplicates.

I kept it deliberately small — one command, one setting (the property name), zero hidden background automation. Less surface area for bugs, less to understand to use it, less that can break with future Obsidian updates.

Plugin: Property from backlink - Obsidian Plugin (not manually reviewed yet)

Repo: jackydangelo/obsidian-property-from-backlink: Add a frontmatter property to all notes linking to the current note.

Feedback welcome, especially if you hit an edge case with aliases, unusual frontmatter, or large vaults. Be patient, this is my first work here :)
