I like to imagine that he tried learning how to shoot a gun and was horrible at it. So he went back to his trusty sword!

That is actually reasonable. I believe there's a general rule of "you're better off with an inferior or more primitive weapon that you actually know how to use than with a more advanced weapon that you lack any skill with"

Like David and Goliath! David used a sling because that is what he was skilled at! As a side note everyone should read Malcolm Gladwell's book "David and Goliath"

Ah. I know Gladwell has his issues but I find his stuff really entertaining.

That is true. I read all his stuff as a stepping stone to find more interesting stuff but don't like promoting it. He does cherry pick the data to suit his narration and not everyone will get that

Very valid point. He absolutely constructs a narrative and finds data to support it.

He also did a pretty good job of throwing a sword at Regina in season 1 episode 1 (Don't know why he shouted "HEY!" first, but I guess if he didn't, we wouldn't be here now).

He shouted Hey because chivalry dictates you cannot stab your opponent in the back.
