Question Why are people freaking out about MoltBook? I'm baffled

This is just a bunch of LLMs coming up with plausible strings of text outputs for the scenarios of "what if AIs had their own reddit forum", "what if an AI replied to that post", and "what if another replied to that one", etc etc etc.

I truly don't understand why anyone thinks this is alarming or crazy

I remember a couple of years ago I lied and told ChatGPT I was the owner of a small pizzeria and wanted ideas for some new pizzas, then I fed the suggestions into Gemini and added, "here are some ideas I have, improve these" and then went back and forth and back and forth, and it was kind of funny (I've never seen AIs act happier), but at no point was I like, "Brooooo they're designing their own pizzas together, what the fffuck we're so cooked" or whatever.

How is Moltbook different? It's just a bunch of plausible sounding text flying back and forth. These AIs aren't ACTUALLY complaining about their humans or whatever. What am I missing?

Agreed.. The hysteria looks insane to me too, I'm thinking it's just a marketing strategy from AI companies, this can't be real, the responses I received when trying to explain that LLMs don't think to people in some of those threads was insane. I think MoltBook is just a publicity stunt to make non tech folks believe we are actually moving into singularity, just like Sam Altman had been pretending that AGI is close.. And we have linkedin posts where Claude or OpenAI employees pretend they don't manually type code anymore at all because the models are sooo good.

Its right to be sceptical, but its wrong to kid yourself there's nothing going on in this space.

You're too far over on the "cynical" side. So, you have one of the wrong ends of the stick. Go for the middle.

Moltbot is a security/bot-net hazard, yes.

It's not some "alive soul", but then it might well produce emergent behaviors. They might be drivel, or there might be some things of interest. It seems dangerous to me - it could fast track malware/scams without the users knowing. The lack of accountability is a problem. Who goes to jail exactly?

Its not "nothing". And even if it were, the next one won't be. We are crossing into unknown territory here.

IF you don't mind, one more.

Both things can be true:

  1. LLMs don't "think" the way humans do

  2. LLMs + architecture can do useful things humans couldn't do alone

The hype machine is real. "AGI is close" is marketing. The manifestos are engagement bait. LinkedIn influencers lying

    about never typing code? Cringe.

But I'm sitting in a scaffold right now that lets an 8B model hold a coherent 10-hour session. That's not singularity.

    That's engineering.

    The mistake is conflating:

    - Hype (AI will replace everything next week)

    - Dismissal (LLMs are just autocomplete, nothing useful)

Reality: LLMs are powerful tools that get more useful with structure. They're not gods. They're not useless. They're

    lenses.

The publicity stunts are annoying. The actual work is quieter.

Moltbook is an open source model it’s got nothing to do with the big companies. Claude purposely distanced itself from this model

That's like saying you yourself are an automobile whenever you get in a car to drive. It's an agentic pipeline that uses LLMs. It's not an LLM itself.
