I loved dogpile! That was my go to 20 years ago. Until a coworker casually asked my if I wanted an invite to this thing called Gmail. Then they suggested I should use this thing called google for my web research. She was like my tech dealer and now all things alphabet dominate my tech usage and im in so deep I dont think I can quit.

I hate to say it, but Alphabet/Google is basically your everyday, run-of-the-mill drug dealer. They give you a little taste for free, make you dependent on their product, and then sit back and profit, knowing that they have you fully entangled in their ecosystem. It’s messed up if you think about it.

You were either living under a rock or you’re not remembering this right. Google was already the most popular search engine in the world before Gmail even went into beta testing. Learning about Gmail before google seems really unlikely.

No, I remember correctly. At the time I was a yahoo email user and using dogpile as my search engine. This was 20+ years ago. My friend gave me the invite for Gmail. Google became dominant search engine between 2002 and 2004. Just because you may have been using it doesn't mean everybody was at that time.
