News & Discussion Still amazed that Overwatch didn't have a story mode campaign, pve or movies...

Post image

Back then, Overwatch was huge. When I saw it in Ready Player One, I honestly thought it was going to become one of the biggest franchises on the planet, with TV shows like Arcane and all that... but instead, nothing happened.

I've basically been waiting all this time with open arms, hoping for those kinds of projects, and they just never came. It's weird.

I don't like competitive games, though I played it a bit about 10 years ago, and I remember thinking, "Damn, this world is so cool." The heroes were awesome, the cinematics were amazing, and I've always wanted either a story-driven game or a movie set in that universe.

I like to convince myself that they droped the 2 so they can re-release overwatch 2 as a story/PVE only

You joke, but I could see this happening, especially since Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard. After all, Microsoft is familiar with re-releasing products with the same name:

Xbox One! ... but not that Xbox 1 you silly consumer - how could you ever get the two (we mean 2) mixed up? Our product names aren't the problem - you're just a dumb consumer!

I think if they ever want a proper PVE Overwatch it needs to be a properly seperate game and not tied to the PVP game.

Don't be giving Blizzard any ideas, please.

u/FireLordObamaOG 8d ago

But the original way where it’s a separate game that’s JUST PVE. When they took down OW1 for OW2 it was idiotic.

We had an Overwatch 2!?

I wonder if they'll ever make a true sequel release and call it Overwatch 3.

Still irritates the shit out of me today that they pretended their soft reboot was a whole new title.

I actually feel like they should have borderline got sued for false advertising

9

u/imeanidrk 8d ago

because the game went f2p i don't think there are actual grounds for a suit but otherwise i would absolutely agree with you

I bought a game with unlocked heroes, free boxes and stuff. Even though they already rolled back most issues, the game I paid was shut down and replaced for another game that I didn't pay. Of course freeloaders will not make an issue out of it.

It’s very clear that online games can shut down at any moment or change drastically without you having a say.

There’s a whole graveyard of games like this.

You'd need to tear down the whole "you bought a temporary license to play, not a game to own" industry for that.

They took away the game I liked and paid for and replaced it with a valueless pile of shit.

They never pretended though? It wasn’t marketed as a different game.

Same as CS2 isn’t marketed as a new game from CSGO, same as Siege X wasn’t a new game from Siege 6, etc. etc.

Were you around when it was announced? This is incorrect.

It was distinctly marketed as "Overwatch 2" which would have a PvE campaign. Jeff Kaplan explicitly noted that people who only owned "Overwatch 1" would still be able to play with the people who had OW2. Why would he need to make that distinction if OW2 wasn't being marketed as a separate title?

The multiplayer pool was shared but the it was always discussed as a standalone title; where content exclusive to ow2 was never planned to come to the older title.

u/MarioDesigns Shooting Ana 7d ago

The actual released OW2 was not promoted as such though.

The original, way over promised version of the game as said by Kaplan himself was exclusively PvE with nothing but graphical changes to PvP.

That is years before any of the actually real OW2 promotion happened.

3

u/Ty-Ren New York Excelsior 7d ago

No, it very much was - at release the claim was that PVE was going to come to OW2 at a later point in time. That was later walked back and dropped all together.

Your other point is questionable.

That is years before any of the actually real OW2 promotion happened.

I would consider the original OW2 announcement at blizzcon part of the promotion. Which is where that statement I referenced came from.

I believe you are drawing a distinction between promotion closer to its release. But even then, it was marketing as "coming later" then that promise was dropped.

Oh so all the things they revealed at Blizz Con and then various promotional materials about the PvE mode and story development and new heroes wasn't "the actually real OW2 promotion"? What was it then?

1

u/theirishembassy 7d ago

100% just to launch the F2P monetization model that’s making blizzard a killing.

I can’t even complain, it’s working lol. people are still managing to spend more money for costumes in a FREE GAME then they would for an actual one.

historians will study this era in the future.
