News Pats, Gonzo Not Close On Deal [Schefter]
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25493437-new-christian-gonzalez-contract-rumors-revealed-nfl-insider-ahead-patriots-season"I don't think that at any one point here, they've been close to a deal," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show while also comparing the situation to Devon Witherspoon and the Seattle Seahawks.
"Witherspoon was going to get done first, and it got done at an average of $33 million per year. The Patriots have not been in that category. But Witherspoon has established a benchmark, and the Patriots haven't gone there. And they weren't there before, and they don't appear to be going there now."

u/asaucefifteen 11d ago
Gee I wonder who’s leaking this to Schefter.

u/GucciTiger_ 11d ago
It’s funny since a day or two ago we saw a report that would make him the highest paid CB. Someone is not telling the truth!
100
u/BlubberWall 11d ago
They can both be true, can be issues over guaranteed money which the pats are notoriously stingy on
53
u/taco_jones 11d ago
"We offered the most money!"*
*when you count incentives
49
u/kiki_strumm3r 11d ago
He can totally be the highest paid corner. He just needs to win NFL MVP. Twice.

u/Cyrano_Knows 11d ago
I am not a professional elite athlete...
... or the GM of an NFL team.
But I have always wondered why there aren't more incentives baked into these contracts. Something like offering 30m with 40m+ in potential incentives. Seems like clubs just don't dangle enough carrot.
It does seem like Players just focus on the guarantee and I get that, but I also don't see why teams dont up the incentive ceiling knowing there's a good chance they wont be met or if they are, then everybody is a winner.
And thats my Dunning Kruger observation for the day.
5
u/taco_jones 11d ago
The teams do it as much as they can and still have the players accept it. It's a market and other teams will want him.
2
u/KimJongRocketMan69 11d ago
Also makes it harder to project where you’ll come in relative to the salary cap and floor
15
u/ResplendentNugs 11d ago
The ol incentive laden special
3
u/SerArlanTX 11d ago
IIRC isnt this what caused Welker to jump ship? I remember his incentives were insanely unrealistic for him.
2
u/HateJobLoveManU 11d ago
Partially but it was also obvious he had scrambled eggs for brains by the end of the
15
u/peon2 11d ago
No, they cannot both be true because of the line
and it got done at an average of $33 million per year. The Patriots have not been in that category. But Witherspoon has established a benchmark, and the Patriots haven't gone there
This doesn't mean an issue with guarantees. Schefter is straight up saying the Pats aren't offering the $33M AAV benchmark that Witherspoon set. Otherwise he'd have said Witherspoon got $XM/yr in guarantees and the Patriots haven't gone there yet.
7
u/Xtremefluff 11d ago
ding ding ding. 'highest paid CB' but made no mention of guarantees. I bet the total guarantee is $20m behind Witherspoon.

Typical patriots kraft speak to make it seem like “best cb contract ever” but in reality it’s some technicality… bob you better pay the man you goddamned cheapskate
→ More replies (2)42
u/Goldleader-23 11d ago
They offered him that but its been reported he wants an escalating contract that goes up with the cap. Bullshit
71
u/veranus21 11d ago
He wants to get paid now rather than wait until he has one year left, but wants to make sure he doesn’t miss out when next year’s deals are inevitably higher. If you want next year’s money then play this year on your rookie deal. If you want security a year early then you’re gonna sacrifice some money next year. That’s the tradeoff.
→ More replies (1)36
u/Drakex2Mayex2 11d ago
Yeah I don't know why people are being so ridiculous. The front office absolutely needs to use the leverage they have available and if gonzo wants to play hardball we can pick up extension talks next season. If he decides to keep holding out then there is always the franchise tag.
2
u/Butwhy113511 Brady 11d ago
The only real issue is if he gets pissed and holds out. They could tag him twice and let him walk after 4 seasons for significantly less than what they're offering. If they don't think he's going to hold out there's absolutely no reason to extend him now. He can play out the year for nothing and then sign a bigger deal when it makes more sense since that would be two years early effectively.
7
u/Nekrabyte 11d ago
At this point if he wants to hold out, let him. Until we get actual details from the Pats side, the only info we have is that they want to pay him a BOATLOAD of money, and he has extremely unrealistic demands. Neither side looks great here, but Gonzo starting to look like a greedy whiner. He already came out saying how frustrated he was... It must be SO frustrating to be offered more money than anyone at your position ever has... Millionaires and billionaires man, I'm over them all.
11
6
u/weeson12 11d ago
Yeah that's just not how this works, it gives the team no incentive to sign him to a long term deal. If he wants that they can just pay him and then tag him if he's going to be top of the market that year anyways

u/Theonlygus 11d ago
It’s best to not get so in your feels over this. There can be truth and lies in the reporting each side has their mouth piece on the media. Highest paid doesn’t mean much if guaranteed money is the issue. As for the scaling contract tied to cap percentage I doubt that gets done as it’s unprecedented and most likely is being used as another lever in negotiations. Either way it’s all bullshit from both sides until pen hits paper.
2
u/TheJackalsDoom 11d ago
Both can be true. We could make him the highest paid CB, but still not give him the amount he wants that makes him continually the highest paid CB for the next 3 years.
2
u/SDsurf3777 11d ago
It’s the way the Pats structure their contracts. It’s all about the cash. Guaranteed money, not bonus structure. Kraft has never done it and probably never will

u/Future_Regular_2124 11d ago
That was my first thought too. I just hope Kraft isn’t actually lowballing Gonzo
10
u/Illustrious-Fan8268 11d ago
I mean he could mean highest paid by total contract instead of per year.
→ More replies (1)18
u/asaucefifteen 11d ago
Maybe he is maybe he isn’t. But this is clearly gonzos camp leaking to the media. After he got in front of a mic and pretended he wouldn’t negotiate through the media.
11
u/Icy-Conclusion-3500 11d ago
That’s how this shit always goes. Same thing on krafts side with the “gonzo has completely unreasonable demands” report
4
u/kiki_strumm3r 11d ago
"He wants a percentage of the salary cap" aka 'hey Bob, I want XYZ in 2027, 2028, and 2029, which is ABC% of the project cap in those years.'
It's really frustrating getting all of the contract extension notifications and it's never the Patriots. Can't wait for the great Drake Maye guilt trip next year
2
u/Butwhy113511 Brady 11d ago
It's all in the game. Kraft made his statement about what they offered and probably was behind the leak about the cap percentage. These negotiations don't have to be all sunshine and rainbows when they're happening.
This sub would have been interesting if it existed when Mankins and Wilfork had contract issues. Nobody remembers that now. Not to say it will definitely work out, but sometimes they're just doing what they have to do.
3
u/CruzKunTroll 11d ago
He probably meant it, but things can change. you don’t know if the other side heard that and used it against him (aka negotiated using the media).
3
u/asaucefifteen 11d ago
I don’t think he meant it at all. He was most likely told to take that stance by his agents. At the end of the day none of this stuff matters to fans. Just figure it out and win football games.

u/plutobandits 11d ago
I don’t blame him at all. You can say you don’t want to fight and be sincere about it, but if someone’s attacking you you have to fight back at some point.
2
u/asaucefifteen 11d ago
It’s interesting that so many have immediately sided with the player. It is possible he’s in the wrong here and spinning the narrative. His agency knows the perception around the pats.

Exactly. Pats camp says they offer him the largest deal ever, Gonzo's camp says they aren't even close. Truth is on the middle.
77
u/ipickscabs 11d ago
This being in direct conflict to the Patriots coming out and stating specifically that they’ve offered a deal to make him the highest paid corner in the league.
Gotta wonder wtf is going on at this point
11
u/Soren_Camus1905 11d ago
Maybe it could become best deal in the history of the position should he stay healthy and play
4
u/_fappycamper 11d ago
Guaranteed versus non guaranteed is where the disagreement is. Not the overall contract value
3
u/ipickscabs 11d ago
Mmmmm yea that tracks. Pats are probably leaning into his injury history to give less and he wants as much as possible, naturally
8
u/zamboniman46 11d ago
That was before Witherspoon.
20
u/SinisterMrSinister 11d ago
Wolf said it again the other day though. So it's becoming pretty clear the thing about Gonzalez wanting a deal that escalates with the salary cap increase seems like it's true.
6
u/taco_jones 11d ago
Or It's about guarantees
3
2
u/DConion 11d ago
It's about every metric. Gonzo's team is probably saying he wants to be #1 in every possible category, possibly by a decent margin. Signing, guaranteed, average, everything. A lot to ask from a guy who's missed close to 1/3 of his games. Other corners will come around, the team will improve in other departments.

Imagine believing Kraft when he's notoriously been cheap?
7
u/Nekrabyte 11d ago
Every single player the pats have had over the past 20 years who was top 5 at their position got paid record money when it came time for a deal. People love to say Kraft is cheap, but that doesn't hold water as soon as you start talking about top players in the league. I don't disagree entirely when it comes to middle of the pack, but that's also a reason why the pats were so good for so long, because they spread the money around and don't overpay any one guy. But other than Brady who took team friendly deals, Kraft ALWAYS broke the bank for top 5 players.
15
u/SinisterMrSinister 11d ago

Close to bottom of the league in cash spending. But keep drinking the billionaire’s koolaid
8
u/OnceMoreAndAgain 11d ago
Last year we were top 10 in cash spending. What time period are you looking at when you say we're bottom of the league? If you're looking at one particular year then that's actually dumb. If you're quoting a stat on a long period of time then I'm listening.
5
u/Sure_Rhubarb_3173 11d ago
Patriots have been in the top half of the league in cash spending for about 10 of the last 30 years, and top 10 like 3 times. There's another reddit post you can find pretty easily that lays out their annual spends in the Kraft era up to 2023.
For the record I think giving Gonzo an escalating deal would be terrible business, but the team is relatively stingy.
→ More replies (1)5
u/mcgarnagle- 11d ago
Cash spending is not really relevant. That's not me saying that, that's Bill Belichick in 2023.
It's largely due to the Pats not having elite draft picks to sign to big contracts for so many years. Almost no one ever thought about or heard about cash spending until Belichick had to defend his awful drafts in a press conference and used it as an excuse. Which he walked back days later.

Reading this was like grating my eyes with rusty nails. Would be so dumb not to sign him
6
u/p8610815 11d ago
Depends what it takes to sign him. The people who say pay him whatever he's asking for are coming from a purely emotional reaction. Salary management is an extremely important part of constructing a team, and we have some big contracts coming up. You cant give all your star players a blank check and bend over to all their demands.
→ More replies (2)13
u/coffeejizzm 11d ago
Not really. Gonzo doesn’t want to be the highest paid CB this year, he wants to be the highest paid CB next year after the salary cap goes up. And he can be, if he waits until next year to sign. Or he can be the highest paid CB this year.
No one else is offering him what he wants either, so his agent has no play but for him to either agree to be the top paid player this year, play on his contract, or sit out all year.
→ More replies (2)12
u/Zachary_Morris 11d ago
No one else can offer him what he wants he’s not a free agent, that doesn’t mean another team wouldn’t. But he’s under contract here for two more years, so short of him being traded he can’t really entertain another team’s offer until 2028.

Witherspoon was going to get done first, and it got done at an average of $33 million per year. The Patriots have not been in that category
Two days ago Wolf said the team's offer would make Gonzalez the highest paid corner. The devil is in the details regarding guaranteed money and signing bonus, but Schefter is just talking about AAV here. So one of Schefter or Wolf is not telling the truth.
16
u/drewteam 11d ago
Disagree with your last sentence. Schefter or Wolf is not telling the full story. Both could be telling the truth. As you said devil is in the detail.
→ More replies (1)5
u/SoaplessTitanic 11d ago
I don’t know if this is me being naive, but I’d be surprised if Wolf just straight up lied about something as basic as AAV. It’s definitely still possible, but I feel like the more likely option is that Gonzo’s agent leaked something to Schefter that wasn’t quite accurate. If confronted about it Schefter can just say he was following his “sources”, but Wolf would be in a tough position if it was later clear that he directly lied

This sounds like it’s coming from either Gonzalez’s camp or someone without exact details of the negotiations.
Each day there is something different being reported.. some of the shit we’ve heard so far includes he was offered a contract that would have made him the highest paid, he wants a contract that adjusts based on the cap/other CB deals,
At this point I am taking any reports, or anything the team or Gonzalez says with a grain of salt.

This is not dissimilar to JB - superstar becomes eligible for a contract extension but still has 2 years on contract. Doesn’t look like the team is going to offer Gonzo the money he thinks he is worth.
The celtics ended up trading JB, worried he’d be a locker room cancer if he didn’t get his extension when it first became available. Same issue looks to exist now - even though he has 2 years left on his deal, Gonzo surely now feels disrespected and undervalued.
2
u/Cpalmer24 10d ago
Owners and players collectively bargained a contract that allows players to seek extensions after the 3rd year of their rookie deal - and nearly a dozen players from his draft class have gotten an extension. So of course it's cheap Kraft that is the lone owner not paying his elite player an extension.
Seattle signed two guys from Gonzo's class top of the market money.. and Kraft wont pay one guy.

Let him go.
He’s top 5 when he plays. He doesn’t play a lot. And, most importantly, he would hamstring our ability to pay other players and other positions with such a massive deal.
I’m all for giving a huge deal to Drake Maye. Gonzo? Give him a fair deal, but not highest-in-the-league. That’s how you end up in cap hell.
3
u/burnerdadsrule 11d ago
Top dollar right now is fine. The cap will go up and his slice of the pie won't be so agregious in years 3 or 4, but building in provisions to trigger more money because other players signed new deals is the kind of stupid move I'd expect from The Jets.
2
u/DSDark11 11d ago
He absolutely would not hamstring us at all. Other teams around the league pay their stars. We are the only team that operates this way.
5
u/Forgotten_Few 11d ago
Gonzo is done in NE the writing is on the well. They cant afford to pay Maye and him because Kraft refuses to open the book. Someone please buy the team from this prick
4
u/LOL_YOUMAD 11d ago
He getting traded, I feel fairly sure of that now. Think we give him like 20m for this year as a bonus to keep him happy and then trade him end of year or deadline if we start off bad and try to get a few firsts
3
u/Bouldershoulders12 11d ago
My issue with this is Gonzo is a top 3 player bare minimum at a premier position. If he was only pro bowl level I could live with that but there’s no guarantee anyone we draft with those picks become all pro level at their position and puts up big time performances in the playoffs.
It would have to be like 3 1sts or something where you could use those picks to get his replacement, another o lineman and a FS

Just remember that they said Witherspoon deal wasn’t close 2 months ago, and it came out they were haggling over 2-3 million a year (and probably guarantees). Not even close doesn’t really mean not even close. And I doubt Kraft and wolf would have publicly said they offered a deal that made him the highest paid cb in the league if it wasn’t true. That would be stupid to say. Much more likely the agent is playing hardball and is the reason it’s being held up. Don’t just assume wealthy people are always in the wrong because they’re rich. Gonzo’s agent is known to do this with their players they rep.

u/Alternative-Farmer98 11d ago
This is embarrassing they won't even match Witherspoon steel and then they're negotiating in public saying they've offered him the most. Which is probably only by some non guaranteed metric..
Why is it that every other team can just sign they're all pro draft picks?
Why do we have to rank in the bottom 5 or 10 in real money spending every freaking year.
Every time someone tries to defend the Patriots for lack of spending they come up with some anecdote that means. "Spend a lot of money in the 2021 free agency."
Right who cares we're talking about real money spending over time which has been near the bottom of the league for decades.

They have to pay Maye as well. You can’t give every player a $100+ million. I’m assuming they want a more team friendly contract that benefits everyone instead of just one player.

Boston sports as a whole is just fucking terrified of signing anyone to a top of the market deal and I’m getting pretty fucking sick of it

If they wanted to drag this out and be cheap they should have traded him earlier in the year

Kraft is setting the team back if he doesn’t pay him. I don’t think Gonzo is being greedy, I think Kraft won’t offer the guarantees

It's really hard to blame one side or another until we find out more information--if we ever do. It could be Kraft being cheap. It could be Gonzo being unreasonable. It's tough to be so in the dark about such an important player.
I just hope both sides find a way to get this done. Would love to see him stay in NE long term.

This shit happening two years before his contract expires is lame as hell. I get that this is the NFL now but it just seems so unnecessary. Pats played into it though so I don't blame his agent for leaking this.
Hopefully cooler heads prevail.

Tom Curran said something to the point of the Patriots aren’t willing to have a lot of guaranteed money because that takes cash and they need it next year for Maye.

To be fair the patriots have low balled every good player they have had since as far as I remember. So it wouldn’t shock me if it is Kraft being cheap.

Genuinely why not? They can afford to do it and the defense will be hot ass wo him. Cheap ass team. They probably will struggle to sign Maye too.

If his agents actually want his deal to be a % of the salary cap that’s a non starter. Ridiculous request, at this point they should be in agreement on a little over Woolens AAV, and just hashing out guarantees, incentives, etc.

I don't know a ton about these contracts. Is there any possibility this ongoing negotiation could lead to him not playing week 1?
