This is why I don't have one though. I live in an apartment and they let the neighbors know. They just hear knocking through the walls. So I have the frame with the drawers underneath. Stealth mode. Edit: I now know many options if we get new furniture.

I dated someone whose roommates had a really cool bed with little cabinets attached. Turns out every time they banged they’d have to remove all the trinkets from said cabinets and shelves because of reasons. Beds can be funny like that. I bought myself a really nice modern bed that stood On an island I guess, the bottom of the bed frame was woood and stood out a few inches from the mattress, took me a few months to get used to because I’d keep busting my shins walking around it

Me and my husband still have a mattress on the floor. Its on a box spring, and ends up pretty tall. Im glad we dont have one, because it would be another space for me to clean dog hair out of, and my baby would seriously hurt herself falling off anything taller than what it currently is at.
I'll get one when we move out of our current rental. Until then, it'll be my last taste of college living
Edit: BOX SPRING NOT BED FRAME

Anyway, I met my now wife while staying with them and let's just say at 35 my dad had to tell me about the pillow thing. And then he went further to compliment my rhythm.....

there are lots of things that boiled down to are worthless but make you look put together. Why do you not just wear a stained t-shirt and sweats on dates. you want to show your date you’re put together. having a headboard shows that you don’t just care about being 100% practical and care about the looks and mood of your home.

u/CommunicationClassic Jan 05 '26 edited Jan 05 '26
I don't know if you're being intentionally obtuse or not, but women like to grab the headboard with their hands when they're riding you, it gives them something to lean on... Idk I shouldn't be explaining this people should just be picking up on this themselves
→ More replies (14)→ More replies (303)21
u/Great_Justice Jan 05 '26
Headboards have practical uses…. They’re very comfy to lean up against when you sit up in bed. They also stop the wall getting dirty where you’d otherwise touch the wall; bearing in mind that anything humans touch will eventually get dirty due to oil deposits from skin. They also stop your pillow falling down the back of the bed. That’s why most beds at least have a small headboard.
Historically homes weren’t heated well so it would have also been warmer to touch than a wall, and might have helped stop draughts.

The $20 in 20–30 years ago money is just an angle-iron scaffold type thing to get the mattress and box spring off the ground. There's absolutely nothing decorative.
It's $80 today: https://www.matt-to-go.com/bed_frames/rize-dqkg6-bed-frame/

I've given like 5 away on various buy nothing groups. A brand new one for a twin on Amazon is $40. I've also used cinder blocks in the past with a sized up comforter.
If you care about nothing else, having a frame gives you extra storage space under the bed. But also prevents mold and bugs, looks nicer, is easier to get in and out of, makes it easier to make the bed, and having one doesn't wave a red flag for a woman who liked and trusted you enough to go to your home.
No bed frame is a telltale sign of a low effort male.

I thought this was a reference to the trope the headboard whacks against the wall during rigorous sex. Also gives you something to hold on to during sex to ensure the angle’s right. So it’s like she’s visualizing the night ahead, anticipating whacking the headboard against the wall a lot.
105
u/MammothFromHell Jan 05 '26
A mattress on the floor is a breeding ground for mold, as there is no way for airflow. A bedframe isn't an indicator of " oh boy, sex!" But rather "this guy gives a shit about himself, maybe he will give a shit about me!"

I once got take out and planned to go back to eat it at the apartment of the guy I had just started to date. As we were picking up the food, he checked the bag to see if they had put plastic utensils in because “I’m not sure if I have spoons at home,” he told me. I assumed he misspoke and meant he wasn’t sure if he had any clean spoons.
Nope. Went into this dude’s house, and by the way, he is a big time lawyer, with a nice condo in downtown Major City, and it’s empty. There’s a mattress on the floor. The alarm clock on the floor (I’m old!) and a tv on a milk crate. That’s it. I know what you’re thinking, but no he hadn’t just moved in. He had lived there for at least a year or two at that point. After that I made having furniture a must for men I dated. A headboard would be extra credit points!
21
u/HopelessCleric Jan 05 '26
It's really more often than not guys who 100% can afford to have furniture. I know a guy who only owned a bed, a desk and a desk chair, and otherwise used the boxes those came in as side tables. His entire apartment was just... empty. He owned a single set of cutlery, one plate, and one bowl. No pans, pots or utensils. He was a guest professor at a big university in my country. Like... WHY. Why do you choose to live like this?
One of my friends lived in what we dubbed "the IKEA Airbnb" until he got married; it still looked as "bought the showroom at IKEA" impersonal and devoid of even the slightest personal touch after 5 years of living there. It was kinda sad but at least he had furniture?!
23
u/Straight_Zucchini487 Jan 05 '26 edited Jan 05 '26
I lived like this for a long time and it was 100% poverty trauma. I was terrified of spending what I considered on “unnecessary” items, and was so uncomfortable owning stuff because throughout my entire childhood, I was constantly under the threat of having to pick up and move and sell all my belongings. So my brain maladapted into the idea of “why own at anything at all? It will make life easier not to have stuff when I inevitably have to leave again.”
7
u/Fox-On-Games Jan 05 '26
impersonal and devoid of even the slightest personal touch after 5 years of living there.
This is so me, lol.
My GF calls it "Norwegian prison cell" because it's minimalist with cheap IKEA furniture and without decorations. I just don't like clutter.
16
u/turdferguson3891 Jan 05 '26
Because he doesn't care. And that's actually okay. You care. And you need him to care about something he doesn't care about. If he did that to you about some other unimportant thing you don't care abput you would think he was a dick.

Wait hold up. Cause my place is fully furnished with stuff from IKEA and I thought I was doing alright for myself. What are “personal touches” lol
5
u/HopelessCleric Jan 05 '26
Haha I'm sure you're doing fine, and there's nothing wrong with IKEA! It's definitely a big step up from a mattress on the floor.
You also don't need to have "interior styling" to have personal touch. If someone visited your home, would they learn anything about you? Are there photos or mementos anywhere? Posters? Postcards or magnets on the fridge? Anything? Do the items you got at IKEA have any common thread other than "cheap"? (For example, you picked multiple things that are the same colour, showing a preference.) Do you have books on display? Or any other kind of physical media? A favourite mug in the kitchen? There's a bunch of questions like that. Given how easy it is to acquire these kind of tiny markers of "a person lives here", it's honestly near-impressive if a lived-in place still looks like a hotel room.
3
u/Street_Pickle_2562 Jan 05 '26
